The author accuses Kessler ⁣of bias in defense of Walz, who is ⁣facing allegations of “stolen valor”—namely that‍ he inflated his ‍military rank and abandoned his unit before deployment to Iraq to run for‌ Congress.

Kessler’s fact-check is positioned as a rebuttal to claims from Republicans regarding Walz’s military ‌record. However, the article argues that Kessler ‌presents the scrutiny of Walz’s record as‌ a partisan ⁣attack rather than a ⁣legitimate assessment of facts. While Kessler acknowledges some controversial aspects of Walz’s military career, he downplays the significance of his decision to leave his unit prior to deployment, suggesting that Walz’s ⁣long service should ⁢mitigate the criticism.

The author further contends that ‍Kessler misrepresents Walz’s‌ rank by saying he served as a command sergeant major when he only held⁢ that rank for a brief period without completing the required service⁤ time to retain ⁣it. Known for his willingness to lie on behalf of Democrats, the Post’s “democracy dies in darkness” guru decided to offer his “assessment” of the controversy engulfing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

While lauded by regime-approved media for his National Guard service, Walz’s rollout as Kamala Harris’ 2024 running mate has been marred by reports and resurfaced clips indicating he committed “stolen valor.” As Matt Beebe has detailed at length in these pages, Walz abandoned his unit before it deployed to Iraq to run for Congress and has inflated his military rank throughout his political career.

Rather than present those facts up front for Post readers, Kessler begins his “fact-check” by citing a quote from Harris announcing Walz as her vice-presidential pick and the following paragraph:

Since [Harris’ announcement], Walz’s record has been under attack by Republicans, with claims that he abandoned his troops on the eve of a deployment to Iraq and that, in an instance of “stolen valor,” inflated his credentials and wartime experience.

The implication, of course, is that any and all scrutiny of Walz’s record and prior claims about his military service are solely the product of GOP partisanship — not the actual facts documenting Walz’s dishonesty. By deploying this deceptive tactic, Kessler aims to convince readers his subsequent “fact-checks” are valid, despite their representation as blatant attempts to run interference for Walz.

In assessing Walz’s decision to abandon his unit prior to its deployment, Kessler lays out a timeline of the Minnesota governor’s military career, from the time he enlisted with the Guard in 1981 to when his unit returned from Iraq in 2007. While admitting that Walz knew his battalion could be sent to the region shortly before moving to retire from service, the Post’s chief “fact-checker” claimed, “whether he abandoned his troops is a matter of perspective,” and seemingly justified the decision by noting the governor “had served nearly a quarter-century in the guard and had already announced he was considering a congressional race” prior to being informed his unit could be deployed.

I guess it’s not enough that Walz’s former colleague and replacement has publicly blasted him for ditching his fellow service members when they needed him most.

The Star Tribune’s “fact-check” of Walz’s resignation was even worse. The Minnesota-based outlet attempted to claim Walz submitted his retirement papers before he was aware his unit could be deployed to Iraq. But that assertion is completely false, as a press release issued by Walz’s inaugural 2005 campaign and cited by Kessler shows.

But let us not forget the Post’s residential gatekeeper of “truth.” He also assessed claims that Walz committed an act of “stolen valor” by inflating his rank throughout his political career.

Despite repeatedly claiming the rank of command sergeant major, Walz is actually a lesser-ranked master sergeant. The most recent instance of this comes from a “fact-check” published by Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post on Friday. Kessler, who has a reputation for bending the truth to favor Democrats, chose to evaluate the controversy surrounding Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. While he has received praise from approved media outlets for his service in the National Guard, Walz’s potential candidacy as Kamala Harris’ running mate for 2024 has been overshadowed by allegations and resurfaced videos suggesting he engaged in “stolen valor.” As detailed by Matt Beebe, Walz left his unit before it was deployed to Iraq to pursue a congressional run and has exaggerated his military rank throughout his political career.

Instead of presenting these facts clearly to readers, Kessler starts his “fact-check” with a quote from Harris announcing Walz as her vice-presidential choice and follows up with this statement: Since [Harris’ announcement], Republicans have attacked Walz’s record with claims that he abandoned his troops just before their deployment to Iraq and inflated his credentials and wartime experience in an act of “stolen valor.” This implies that any criticism of Walz’s military record is merely partisan Republican rhetoric rather than based on factual evidence highlighting his dishonesty. By using this misleading approach, Kessler attempts to validate subsequent “fact-checks,” despite them appearing as obvious efforts to shield Walz.

In evaluating Walz’s choice to leave his unit prior to deployment, Kessler outlines a timeline of the governor’s military history from when he enlisted in 1981 until when his unit returned from Iraq in 2007. He acknowledges that Walz was aware of potential deployment shortly before deciding to retire but claims that whether or not he abandoned his troops is subjective. He tries to justify this decision by noting that the governor had served nearly twenty-five years in the guard and had already indicated plans for a congressional campaign prior to being informed about possible deployment.

It seems insufficient even after criticism from both former colleagues and replacements regarding him abandoning fellow service members during critical times. The Star Tribune’s assessment of Walz’s resignation was even more flawed; they falsely claimed he submitted retirement papers without knowing about potential deployment orders—an assertion contradicted by evidence cited by Kessler himself.

Kessler also evaluated accusations against Walz regarding “stolen valor” due to exaggerating ranks throughout his political career. Although claiming command sergeant major status repeatedly, it turns out he’s actually held the lesser rank of master sergeant; while promoted during later years of service, he did not meet retention requirements upon leaving for Congress.

The Harris-Walz campaign indirectly acknowledged these inaccuracies when they quietly modified their website biography stating he “served as command sergeant major” instead of labeling him as “retired command sergeant major.” However, these details were apparently insufficient for Kessler who deemed claims about stolen valor only partially true—suggesting it would be more accurate simply stating he “served” rather than outright claiming such title.

Kessler continued down this path by downplaying other misrepresentations made by Walz regarding combat experience in Afghanistan; while deployed overseas, records show that units were sent primarily elsewhere like Italy—not directly involved on-ground operations within Afghanistan itself. Despite acknowledging no evidence supporting claims made about serving there at all—he overlooked endorsements tied back towards literature falsely asserting otherwise.

Even C-SPAN mistakenly referred publicly calling him an “Afghanistan War Veteran,” further complicating matters around credibility concerning statements made over time related back towards military involvement overall.
While rating one claim untrue where weapons were mentioned being carried into war zones—the language used was described merely as “sloppy,” reflecting past tendencies seen previously sanitizing radicalism or falsehoods associated closely tied alongside Democratic narratives overall.

Shawn Fleetwood serves as staff writer at The Federalist having graduated University Mary Washington previously working state content writer Convention States Action featured across various platforms including RealClearPolitics among others following @ShawnFleetwood Twitter account respectively!

[14599,6733,33457,37357,36113
post-2322102","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-fact-checking","tag-controversy","tag-media-analysis","tag-stolen-valor","tag-tim-walz
["GET
