But if Walz does, the last two presidential-level National Guard veterans provide a path of attack.

Former President George W. Bush showed the effectiveness of fighting back. Governor Tim Walz (D-MN), the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is being encouraged to discuss his National Guard service and provide a clear account of his time in uniform as well as the reasons for his departure after two decades. Democratic advisor Van Jones stated on CNN, “If he made one or two statements that were somewhat inaccurate, he should correct them. Let’s resolve this and move forward.” Although Walz has avoided questions regarding how he characterized his service and whether he left to evade deployment to Iraq, the Harris campaign has modified his online biography by changing his designation from “retired command sergeant major” to indicating that he served at that rank before losing it due to not completing necessary courses. Despite this adjustment, Walz has maintained the incorrect claim for years, which has become part of his political identity; C-SPAN even shared a video of him asserting this in 2006. The supportive liberal Washington Post also noted that Walz misrepresented aspects of his military service but used less harsh language in its critique: “Walz’s statements were misleading and untrue. He did handle weapons of war—just not during wartime.” It remains uncertain if Walz intends to counter these claims; however, former President George W. Bush’s experience demonstrates an effective strategy for doing so when questioned about National Guard service by former CBS anchor Dan Rather—Bush responded forcefully enough that Rather was ultimately removed from the situation. Former Vice President Dan Quayle serves as another example; when selected as George H.W. Bush’s running mate in 1988, media scrutiny arose over allegations that Quayle had used connections to join the National Guard instead of serving in Vietnam—a controversy nearly derailed his candidacy until Quayle decided to confront it head-on with a lively press conference back home shortly after the Republican National Convention concluded.

In reflecting on these experiences in his memoir “Standing Firm,” Quayle emphasized the importance of maintaining an offensive stance against opponents and media narratives: “It is essential not to let anyone else dictate your agenda.” He revealed considering withdrawal from the race until encouraged by his wife Marilyn who bluntly remarked that stepping down would lead people to believe those accusations forever: “You have to stay and fight.” Following Quayle’s press conference where supporters rallied against journalists, a plaque commemorating what became known as the “Battle of Huntington” was erected at its location—a moment marking ongoing tensions between presidential administrations and their press corps even today.
