The department shared a detailed account of the incident on Facebook. “On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, the City of Wildwood Police Department held its National Night Out community event at Fox Park. For over twenty years, we have operated a simulated impaired driving low-speed golf cart course as part of this event,” they stated. According to the New York Post, this golf cart is modified to mimic impaired driving conditions.

The idea is for participants to attempt steering while experiencing difficulties similar to those faced by intoxicated drivers. Unfortunately, during one session of this course, a golf cart operated by a young attendee and a Wildwood Police Officer veered off course and collided with several people. The post mentioned that since first responders from the Wildwood Fire Department were already present at the event, assistance was provided immediately after the accident occurred.

As reported in their post, four adults and one juvenile were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment. By Wednesday morning, two individuals remained hospitalized due to their injuries. “We look forward to this event every year; many officers and their families attend,” they added.

“This tragic incident has deeply affected everyone at the City of Wildwood Police Department; our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to those injured,” they noted while indicating that an investigation is underway. A separate post on North Wildwood’s National Night Out page described its purpose: it is an annual nationwide campaign aimed at fostering police-community relationships and neighborhood solidarity.

“For 40 years now, it has united over 38 million neighbors across 17,000 communities in all 50 states and military bases,” they explained further.
