The office of District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb charged Kenmore Pest Control & Termite Services with unlawfully and consistently using pesticides within the district, posing risks to residents and damaging local natural resources. According to the attorney general’s office, Kenmore frequently operates in Washington and employs around 20 staff members. City inspectors reported that the company improperly applied harmful pesticides at two apartment complexes: Mayfair Mansion Apartments in Ward 7 and Columbia Heights Village in Ward 1. At Mayfair Mansion Apartments, Kenmore used a chemical that is dangerous for humans and extremely toxic to birds, fish, and wildlife. The district had to intervene, spending $12,000 on cleaning up contaminated soil. At Columbia Heights Village, it was alleged that the company applied a hazardous pesticide in areas accessible to children and pets; a resident’s dog was reportedly poisoned after ingesting it and required veterinary treatment for stomach pumping. Additionally, Kenmore allowed untrained employees to apply restricted-use pesticides for several years while misleading consumers about its illegal activities. Attorney General Schwalb stated that “Washingtonians have a right to be safe from toxic contamination in their homes and neighborhoods,” emphasizing that violations of environmental protection laws will lead to accountability from his office.
