Khelif, who ⁤was born with male chromosomes but female genitalia, recently gained attention after defeating⁤ Italian boxer Angela Carini in just 46 seconds. This has raised questions about fairness and safety in women’s boxing, particularly ‌considering Khelif’s genetic background, which may provide her⁢ with advantages in combat sports.

Despite being beaten by nine female opponents earlier ⁢in her career, Khelif’s recent performance prompts concerns about ‌the implications of competing against athletes with ⁣significant‌ biological advantages. This situation escalated when both ⁣Khelif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting‌ were disqualified from the 2023 International Boxing Association world championships due to their DSD status. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has faced criticism for supporting Khelif’s right to compete, citing their procedural decisions as arbitrary and lacking transparency.

Irish/British boxer Amy Broadhurst defended ⁤Khelif, arguing that Khelif should not be held accountable for her biological‍ condition. However,‌ the article emphasizes that intent and eligibility ‍are different matters, particularly when athlete safety is ⁢at stake in combat sports, where differences in strength and capabilities can directly impact health and well-being. the ongoing debate highlights‍ the complex ⁣intersection of sports, gender identity, and fairness, raising questions about how to create a safe and equitable environment for all athletes.

    Read more…

Amy Broadhurst has every reason to defend Imane Khelif. The problem is that her defense misses the whole point.

Yes, Broadhurst is an object lesson in the fact that the Algerian boxer can be beaten. She’s the last person to beat her, in fact, according to BoxRec, in a bout over two years ago.

However, Khelif proved to be more difficult for Italy’s Angela Carini, who she dispatched in just 46 seconds and two punches; the Italian boxer then retired and said she feared for her safety.

“I had to preserve my life,” Carini said.

The problem, as you’ve doubtlessly heard if you’ve been following the story, is that Khelif reportedly has an intersex condition called Differences of Sexual Development, or DSD. It’s an umbrella term for someone whose chromosomes and outward sex characteristics don’t match; in Khelif’s case, it means that she was born with male chromosomes but female genitalia.

The official reports on exactly what happened have been somewhat contradictory for reasons of confidentiality, but the general consensus is this: Khelif and another Olympics boxer, Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, both were disqualified from the International Boxing Association world championships in 2023 for DSD.

The International Olympics Committee, which used to allow Olympic boxing to be governed by the IBA, now runs the sport under its own rules due to a long-running dispute over governance and financial issues. The reasons behind the contratemps are too arcane and longwinded to explain here, but they are indeed explicable. What’s inexplicable is the IOC’s statement on its decision to ignore the IBA’s decision and rely, instead, on its own rules, where “the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport.”

In the statement, the IOC said that the two athletes “were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision” and that “[t]he current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years.”

Broadhurst’s defense of Khelif, according to the Belfast Telegraph, was equally inexplicable.

“Have a lot of people texting me over Imane Khelif,” the Irish/British boxer and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist said on social media.

“Personally I don’t think she has done anything to ‘cheat’. In another sport, perhaps one could make an argument that while this is an ultra-rare genetic advantage, all athletes, at some level, are winners of the genetic lottery; women with DSD like Khelif reportedly has are simply Powerball winners among a field of lesser lottery winners — ones who just won a genetic scratch-off game, say, to extend the metaphor.

When safety enters the equation and replaces fairness as the sole operative goal, however, that metaphor doesn’t hold.

We don’t arbitrarily let larger people fight smaller people in combat sports. That’s why we have weight divisions — not just because we want to see a good match, but because letting a heavyweight like Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali, in their prime, beat up on some poor flyweight is essentially a recipe for a coma.

While this may be a reductio ad absurdum of Khelif’s case, it’s not especially far off when you consider she’s one of two women with male sex hormones who likely underwent male puberty and would likely still have naturally higher testosterone levels. The latter may be checked through hormone treatments, but the former advantage cannot be undone.

A heavyweight boxer has not “done” anything to “cheat” by not being a flyweight, generally speaking, they’re just naturally larger. Similarly, Khelif has not “done” anything to “cheat” by having XY chromosomes, but that still places her in a category where the IBA disqualifies her — and the IOC’s explanation for waving that aside is thoroughly unconvincing.

Also, while Khelif can be defeated — and again, Broadhurst is proof — keep in mind that those losses are clustered toward the beginning of her career, which started when she was just 19. Her last loss, to Broadhurst, was over two years ago. Five of those nine losses came in her first six bouts, which took place before 2020.

The problem is not intent, nor is merely fairness. This is about safety. If Broadhurst wishes to disregard her own, that’s fine. That’s a personal decision. A woman shouldn’t have to disregard hers to win an Olympic medal.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! While it’s true that Broadhurst is a testament to the fact that Khelif can be defeated—she was the last person to do so over two years ago, according to BoxRec—Khelif has proven more challenging for Italy’s Angela Carini, whom she defeated in just 46 seconds with only two punches. Following this match, Carini retired out of concern for her safety, stating, “I had to preserve my life.”

The controversy surrounding Khelif stems from reports that she has an intersex condition known as Differences of Sexual Development (DSD), which refers to individuals whose chromosomes and physical sex characteristics do not align. In Khelif’s case, she possesses male chromosomes but female genitalia.

Official accounts regarding the events have been somewhat inconsistent due to confidentiality issues; however, it is generally agreed that both Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting were disqualified from the International Boxing Association world championships in 2023 because of their DSD status. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which now oversees Olympic boxing due to ongoing disputes with the IBA over governance and financial matters, made a controversial decision based on its own rules regarding athlete gender and age as determined by their passports.

In its statement about this decision, the IOC described both athletes as victims of an abrupt and arbitrary ruling made without proper procedure—especially given their extensive experience competing at high levels. Broadhurst’s defense of Khelif was similarly puzzling; she expressed on social media that she believes Khelif hasn’t cheated since her condition is beyond her control and pointed out that Khelif has lost nine times before.

However, it’s important to distinguish between intent to cheat and eligibility. If Khelif indeed has XY chromosomes resulting from male puberty—a factor noted by Reuters as significant in combat sports—it gives her inherent advantages such as increased muscle mass and strength compared to typical female competitors. This raises serious safety concerns in boxing where weight classes exist not only for competitive balance but also for participant safety.

While larger fighters are not allowed to compete against smaller ones due solely to size differences—which could lead potentially dangerous outcomes—the same principle applies here: allowing someone like Khelif into women’s competitions poses similar risks given her biological advantages stemming from male puberty.

Although Broadhurst points out that losses are part of any athlete’s journey—including those suffered by Khelif early in her career—the core issue remains one of safety rather than mere fairness or intent. If Broadhurst chooses not prioritize these concerns personally that’s up to her; however, no woman should have to compromise on safety standards just for a chance at winning an Olympic medal

[33651
37086,12475,37084,4825,37085
post-2318616","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-athleteethics","tag-boxing","tag-imanekhelif","tag-olympics","tag-sportsintegrity
["GET
