From mockery of God to effluence in the Seine disrupting the men’s triathlon, it seems there’s been little cause for organizers to celebrate. And now, they face what’s likely their biggest challenge yet: a women’s boxer named Imane Khelif.

Khelif, who is Algerian, also has the relative advantage of XY chromosomes, which would typically make her male. Multiple outlets, including Reuters, reported that she suffers from one of a range of extremely rare medical conditions known as Differences of Sexual Development, which can include cases where one’s chromosomes and genitals are “mismatched” when they’re born.

She’s one of two boxers competing as female who were disqualified from last year’s world championships in New Delhi after the International Boxing Association said they failed a test — in this case, just hours before the gold medal bout in 2023.

“Some people with DSDs are raised as female but have XY sex chromosomes, blood testosterone levels in the male range and the ability to use testosterone circulating within their bodies,” Reuters reported.

“That advantage is not just through higher testosterone levels but also in muscle mass, skeletal advantage and faster twitch muscle,” the wire service noted. “In combat sports such as boxing, this can be a serious safety issue.”

However, part of the issue is that the IBA has been stripped of its role in governing boxing at the Olympics. Instead, the role fell to the IOC, which has diversity guidelines that make gender inclusion the default status — essentially allowing those with DSDs to compete as women, including in sports like boxing.

The only time an individual is excluded is if there are safety and fairness concerns. While you’d think this would be one instance where that applies, the IOC disagrees, with the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit and IOC putting out a joint statement, saying that they were “committed to protecting the human rights of all athletes participating in the Olympic Games” and that the competitors “were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA.”

However, it doesn’t deny that the women have DSDs — and Khelif’s first-round opponent quit 46 seconds into the fight, the U.K.’s Daily Mail reported, after she said she feared for her safety and had never been hit so hard by another competitor before.

Angela Carini of Italy broke down after the fight, saying that she’d never taken hits so hard throughout her career. However, this has not been true for the 2024 Paris Olympics. From ridicule directed at religious figures to pollution in the Seine affecting the men’s triathlon, organizers have had little to celebrate. Now they are confronted with what may be their most significant challenge: a female boxer named Imane Khelif. Khelif is Algerian and possesses XY chromosomes, which usually indicate male characteristics. Various sources, including Reuters, have reported that she has a rare medical condition known as Differences of Sexual Development (DSD), where an individual’s chromosomes and genitalia may not align at birth.

Khelif is one of two female boxers who were disqualified from last year’s world championships in New Delhi after failing a test just hours before their gold medal match in 2023. According to Reuters, “Some individuals with DSDs are raised as females but possess XY sex chromosomes and testosterone levels typical of males,” along with physical advantages such as increased muscle mass and faster twitch muscle fibers—factors that can pose serious safety concerns in combat sports like boxing.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has lost its authority over Olympic boxing governance; this responsibility now lies with the IOC, which follows diversity guidelines that prioritize gender inclusion—allowing those with DSDs to compete as women even in contact sports like boxing. Exclusion only occurs when there are significant safety or fairness issues; however, despite these concerns being evident here, the IOC maintains its stance on protecting athletes’ human rights.

The IOC’s joint statement with Paris 2024 Boxing Unit emphasized their commitment to athlete rights while acknowledging that these competitors were victims of an abrupt decision by IBA. Nonetheless, they do not dispute that Khelif and others have DSDs; reports indicate her first-round opponent withdrew after just 46 seconds due to fears for her safety following powerful blows from Khelif.

Angela Carini from Italy expressed distress post-fight about never having experienced such forceful hits throughout her career. Video evidence highlights Khelif’s striking power during matches against opponents like Brianda Tamara—a Mexican boxer who faced Khelif before being disqualified herself due to chromosomal testing issues.

Tamara described feeling overwhelmed by Khelif’s strength during their bout: “I felt very outmatched… I’ve never felt anything like it in my 13 years as a boxer.” She later shared on social media how she received backlash for speaking out about what she perceived as an unfair advantage stemming from genetic factors.

While it’s important to note that cases like Khelif’s are statistically rare, her unique biological circumstances provide her with advantages over other competitors—raising questions about fairness and safety within women’s boxing at the Olympics. Both parties involved seem reluctant to take action regarding these risks despite growing public discourse surrounding them amidst ongoing controversies related to inclusivity policies set forth by organizations like the IOC

[37022,37023,36956,37024,37025
post-2318228","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-controversial-boxer","tag-female-fighter","tag-imane-khelif","tag-olympic-match","tag-survival-story
["GET
