Representative Burgess Owens (R-UT) plans to introduce legislation aimed at withholding hundreds of millions in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding from cities overwhelmed by illegal immigrants who have been released into the U.S. from the southern border. These cities have reportedly used federal grants to cover transportation costs for migrants being relocated to other areas. Owens expressed concern about migrants arriving at airports and bus stations without any support after being sent by sanctuary cities, as outlined in his Sanctuary City Oversight and Responsibility in Enforcement (SCORE) Act.

The proposal comes after Salt Lake City received migrants unexpectedly from Denver, which had received nearly $13 million from the Biden administration for migrant assistance in 2023 and 2024. Denver has struggled with an influx of over 5 million illegal immigrants since President Biden took office, with a spokesperson stating that they had helped around 42,000 migrants seeking assistance.

While individuals released at the border can travel anywhere, many have taken state-provided buses from Texas to various destinations across the country; however, only about 19,000 have gone to Denver specifically. In response to Denver sending nearly 1,700 tickets for migrants traveling to Salt Lake City between late 2022 and early this year without prior notice or approval, Utah Governor Spencer Cox criticized this action as “completely unacceptable,” highlighting that Utah’s resources are already stretched thin due to immigration policies.

Although Salt Lake City is led by a Democratic mayor, it has not designated itself as a sanctuary city where local law enforcement would refrain from cooperating with federal immigration authorities regarding non-immigration offenses. Under FEMA’s guidance during the Biden administration, approximately $700 million has been allocated for addressing issues related to migration.

Owens argues that sanctuary cities like Denver are misusing federal funds intended for assisting detained migrants by transporting them elsewhere instead of providing necessary services such as housing or food when shelters are full. The SCORE Act aims not only to restrict how FEMA funds can be used but also mandates advance notification and documentation regarding where transported individuals will stay upon arrival in new locations.

In addition, New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams has faced criticism for offering free bus rides for migrants heading toward Canada while previously condemning similar actions taken by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis involving immigrant relocations.

The proposed legislation would require recipients of FEMA grants not only notify receiving officials before transporting individuals but also ensure each migrant has an organization or sponsor ready at their destination city—aimed at preventing overcrowding in shelters—and calls for regular reports on grant distributions across states

[538
3895,5371,36985
post-2318036","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-bill","tag-migrants","tag-sanctuary-cities
["GET
