EXCLUSIVE — Congressional Republicans are working to reverse or prevent predominantly Democratic states from enacting excise sales taxes on guns, ammo, and related accessories that would fund gun violence prevention initiatives and medical trauma centers. Senator James Risch (R-ID), the ranking member of the Foreign Relations Committee, plans to introduce a bill on Thursday aimed at stopping states or local governments from pursuing such measures, which he argues would impose a heavy financial burden on responsible gun owners in order to promote an anti-Second Amendment agenda. Several states are considering following California’s example, which recently implemented an 11% firearms tax—marking the first of its kind in the nation—on top of the federal minimum tax of 10%. Risch’s proposed legislation, known as the Freedom from Unfair Gun Taxes Act and first reported by the Washington Examiner, is unlikely to gain traction in a divided Congress but reflects Republican priorities should they gain control this fall. Risch stated that Democrats’ latest move against the Second Amendment resembles an excessive excise tax intended to support gun control efforts. The proposed measure would not affect existing state firearm taxes that contribute to federal wildlife conservation programs under the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act. California’s new tax is projected to raise $160 million annually for state programs aimed at preventing gun violence by enhancing school security and removing firearms from domestic abusers. Other states considering similar actions include Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, and Washington; for instance, Maryland supporters claim their proposed 11% tax could generate $13 million each year primarily for funding trauma care systems for gunshot victims. At least three municipalities have already enacted similar measures: Seattle and Tacoma in Washington State as well as Cook County in Illinois. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), who will present a House version of Risch’s bill accused his home state of trying “to make self-defense unaffordable for Americans.” He criticized California’s new “sin tax” on firearms as equating a fundamental constitutional right with gambling or drug use. Risch’s legislation has backing from various pro-gun organizations including the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and National Rifle Association among others; it has several original co-sponsors including Senators Mike Crapo (R-ID), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Steve Daines (R-MT), Deb Fischer (R-NB) along with Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC)

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/republicans-seek-to-axe-state-firearm-taxes.webp
[538
4204,3756,36867
post-2317413","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-guns","tag-republicans","tag-state-taxes
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/republicans-seek-to-axe-state-firearm-taxes.webp
["GET
