These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The Disclaimer ends with a link to Disney\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storiesmatter.thewaltdisneycompany.com\/\"><span>Stories Matter<\/span><\/a><span> initiative, aimed to help viewers \u201clearn more about how stories have impacted society. The initiative webpage states that \u201cAs part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are in the process of reviewing our library and adding advisories to content that includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures. Rather than removing this content, we see an opportunity to spark conversation and open dialogue on history that affects us all. We also want to acknowledge that some communities have been erased or forgotten altogether, and we\u2019re committed to giving voice to their stories as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In late January, Disney went one step further and censored \u201cfour of their classic films from the Disney+ accounts of children under age seven, citing what they described as the \u2018negative depictions and\/or mistreatment of people or cultures.\u2019\u201d Dumbo, Peter Pan, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Aristocats were no longer available for these users, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9179987\/Disney-blocks-sevens-watching-racist-Peter-Pan-Dumbo-Aristocats.html\"><span>The Mail on Sunday<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It now seems that further titles have been hidden from younger viewers. Here is a list of Disney movies on the streaming service, Disney+, which have been hidden from children under the age of seven and now display the \u201cnegative depictions and\/or mistreatment of people or cultures\u201d Disclaimer, some of which include the explanation provided by the Stories Matter initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fantasia (1940)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWalt Disney\u2019s timeless masterpiece is a celebration of sight and sound, featuring eight sequences marrying classical music with the most innovative animation of its day,\u201d the movie page reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The film includes the Disclaimer for adult viewers and is not accessible by viewers under the age of seven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dumbo (1941)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cExperience the daring adventures of the world\u2019s only flying elephant,\u201d the Disney+ profile reads for the 1941 movie. \u201cThe inspirational tale of Dumbo, the courageous baby elephant who uses his sensational ears to soar to fame with the help of his clever best friend Timothy Q. House, will thrill and delight audiences of all ages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Unfortunately, this movie is no longer available to viewers under the age of seven on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Stories Matter initiative explains why Dumbo is one of the movies selected as problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p><em><span>\u201c<\/span><span>The crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations. The leader of the group in Dumbo is Jim Crow, which shares the name of laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. In \u2018The Song of the Roustabouts,\u2019 faceless Black workers toil away to offensive lyrics like \u2018When we get our pay, we throw our money all away.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dumbo (1941) Trailer #1 | Movieclips Classic Trailers\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tLtQ3bCvBA0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Peter Pan (1953)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFantastic adventures await Wendy and her brothers when Peter Pan, the hero of their stories, whisks them away to the magical world of Never Land,\u201d the Disney+ page reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Stories Matter initiative section on Peter Pan adds:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em><span>\u201c<\/span><span>The film portrays Native people in a stereotypical manner that reflects neither the diversity of Native peoples nor their authentic cultural traditions. It shows them speaking in an unintelligible language and repeatedly refers to them as \u2018redskins,\u2019 an offensive term. Many appear in \u2018yellow face\u2019 or \u2018brown face\u2019 and are costumed in an exaggerated and inaccurate manner with top knot hairstyles, queues, robes and overdone facial make-up and jewelry, reinforcing their barbarism and \u2018otherness.\u2019 They speak in an indecipherable language, presenting a singular and racist representation of Asian and Middle Eastern peoples.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>The Jungle Book (1967)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Also unavailable for viewers under the age of seven, the Disney+ profile reads, \u201cExperience the song-filled celebration of friendship, fun, and adventure that was the last film to receive Walt Disney\u2019s personal touch. Laughs and adventure ensue as the greedy, bumbling butler pulls off the ultimate catnap caper in hopes of gaining the inheritance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Stories Matter explains its exclusion as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em><span>\u201cThe cat is depicted as a racist caricature of East Asian peoples with exaggerated stereotypical traits such as slanted eyes and buck teeth. He sings in poorly accented English voiced by a white actor and plays the piano with chopsticks. This portrayal reinforces the \u2018perpetual foreigner\u2019 stereotype, while the film also features lyrics that mock the Chinese language and culture such as \u2018Shanghai, Hong Kong, Egg Foo Young.
