When it clearly serves as a cowardly escape. Following the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which were tainted by an anti-Christian parody of “The Last Supper,” Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps stated that the performance achieved its intended purpose but expressed regret if anyone misinterpreted their mockery of Christianity. The controversial tableau featured women and drag queens (along with a child) in a scene reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous mural depicting the biblical event.

Despite claims from organizers that there was no connection to either the painting or the event, USA Today described how during Friday’s ceremony, French DJ Barbara Butch appeared on Debilly Bridge over the Seine in a blue dress with drag queens beside her. A nearly naked man painted blue—representing Dionysus, the Greek god—was later seen on a dinner plate surrounded by food while singing as people danced around him.

The official Olympic account claimed that this portrayal aimed to highlight “the absurdity of violence between human beings.” However, when this explanation failed to convince many, Thomas Jolly, artistic director for the ceremonies, insisted there was no intention to shock or mock anyone. He emphasized that it was meant to be a celebration connected to Olympus’ gods and denied any desire to offend.

Critics within Christian communities dismissed these statements as insincere. The French Bishops’ Conference labeled it “mockery and derision” towards Christianity and expressed sympathy for those offended by certain scenes. Bishop Robert Barron remarked in a viral video that such portrayals desecrated an essential moment in Christianity while Speaker of the House Mike Johnson condemned it as “shocking and insulting.”

In response, Descamps reiterated their lack of intent to disrespect any religious group and claimed they aimed for community tolerance based on poll results indicating success in achieving this goal. She added they were genuinely sorry if anyone took offense.

However, many found her assertions hard to believe; she essentially expected followers of one of the world’s largest religions to accept that Jolly and his team were completely unaware of one of their faith’s most significant artistic representations during such an important event. Instead, we are led to believe they solely focused on Dionysus without considering how closely their tableau resembled “The Last Supper.”

This type of apology shifts responsibility onto those who feel offended for misunderstanding what was supposedly innocent intent—a clear attempt at deflection rather than accountability. If someone didn’t see “The Last Supper” reference here, they’re either foolish or willfully ignorant according to Descamps’ logic; meanwhile she seems oblivious herself about how ridiculous her claims sound given context.

Ultimately this approach has only worsened perceptions surrounding them—an unfortunate outcome indeed

[33651
5447,6733,9686,4825,6320
post-2315346","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-apology","tag-controversy","tag-jesus","tag-olympics","tag-organizers
["GET
