For others, the behavior of the Washington Post and others in recent months has caused the veil of objectivity being held over their eyes to become almost transparent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In early January, as Trump\u2019s refusal to accept electoral defeat drove the legacy media into a Trump Derangement Syndrome frenzy \u2014 only further accelerated by their desire to celebrate the start of Joe Biden\u2019s administration \u2014 one particular story became a central pillar in their narrative against Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the Washington Post, \u201c<\/span><span>President Donald Trump urged Georgia\u2019s lead elections investigator to \u2018find the fraud\u2019 in a lengthy December phone call, saying the official would be a \u2018national hero,\u2019 according to an individual familiar with the call who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the conversation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/trump-georgia-find-the-fraud-elections-investigator-20210109.html\">report<\/a>, written by Amy Gardner, was shared by numerous media outlets such as CNN, NBC News and ABC News. Some outlets even confirmed the reports, with NBC News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/01\/09\/georgia-trump-reportedly-pressured-elections-investigator-to-overturn-election.html\"><span>confirming<\/span><\/a><span> \u201c<\/span><span>The Post\u2019s characterization of the Dec. 23 call through a source familiar with the conversation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s just one minor problem. Trump never said \u201cfind the fraud\u201d or that the official would be a \u201cnational hero.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>It was all a lie.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 11, in an exclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/recording-of-trump-phone-call-to-georgia-lead-investigator-reveals-new-details-11615411561\">report<\/a>, the Wall Street Journal released an audio recording of the six-minute call. No mention of \u201cfind the fraud\u201d or \u201cnational hero.\u201d The anonymous source cited by the Washington Post \u2014 and every other outlet which happily regurgitated their claims \u2014 was wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What should astound us all is that the result of the Washington Post \u2014 supposedly the pinnacle of journalism \u2014 spreading overtly false narratives is \u2026 that nothing happens. The author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/people\/amy-gardner\/\">Amy Gardner<\/a>, appears to remain employed by the Washington Post, whose slogan \u201cDemocracy Dies in Darkness\u201d becomes even more darkly ironic with each passing day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A handful of media outlets have offered muted retractions, subtly altering language while ignoring that the Washington Post promoted a false report. Even the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-call-georgia-investigator\/2021\/01\/09\/7a55c7fa-51cf-11eb-83e3-322644d82356_story.html\">correction<\/a>\u201d on the original Washington Post article evades this central point.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12.727496917386\">\n<p><i><span>Correction: Two months after publication of this story, the Georgia secretary of state released an audio recording of President Donald Trump\u2019s December phone call with the state\u2019s top elections investigator. The recording revealed that The Post misquoted Trump\u2019s comments on the call, based on information provided by a source. Trump did not tell the investigator to \u201cfind the fraud\u201d or say she would be \u201ca national hero\u201d if she did so. Instead, Trump urged the investigator to scrutinize ballots in Fulton County, Ga., asserting she would find \u201cdishonesty\u201d there. He also told her that she had \u201cthe most important job in the country right now.\u201d A story about the recording <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-call-georgia-investigator\/2021\/03\/11\/c532ea2e-827a-11eb-ac37-4383f7709abe_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\"><i><span>can be found here<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span>. The headline and text of this story have been corrected to remove quotes misattributed to Trump.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>No, they didn\u2019t \u201cmisquote\u201d Trump\u2019s comments. They rebuilt them. They constructed a favorable narrative \u2014 either directly or with the willing assistance of an \u201canonymous source\u201d \u2014 with little to no regard for journalistic integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But who cares about journalistic integrity? This isn\u2019t about journalism anymore. It\u2019s about winning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the context of true journalism, Amy Gardner is an embarrassment.
