Here\u2019s everything you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>December 23, 2020 \u2014 Trump\u2019s call with chief investigator<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On December 23, Trump called the chief investigator for the Georgia Secretary of State\u2019s office, who was conducting an audit of election ballots in Cobb County, Georgia. The audit was ordered by Brad Raffensperger in response to allegations of election fraud. The audit ended on December 29, with Georgia officials concluding that there was no evidence of fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 3, 2021 \u2014 Trump\u2019s call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On January 3, the Washington Post published an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-raffensperger-call-georgia-vote\/2021\/01\/03\/d45acb92-4dc4-11eb-bda4-615aaefd0555_story.html\"><span>exclusive piece<\/span><\/a><span> titled, \u201c\u2018I just want to find 11,780 votes\u2019: In extraordinary hour-long call, Trump pressures Georgia secretary of state to recalculate the vote in his favor.\u201d Written by Amy Gardner, the piece described the December 23 phone call between Donald Trump and the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the first paragraph, Gardner reported that Trump instructed Raffensperger to \u201cfind enough votes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>President Trump urged fellow Republican Brad Raffensperger, the Georgia secretary of state, to \u2018find\u2019 enough votes to overturn his defeat in an extraordinary one-hour phone call Saturday that legal scholars described as a flagrant abuse of power and a potential criminal act,\u201d the piece began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Washington Post obtained a recording of the conversation in which Trump alternately berated Raffensperger, tried to flatter him, begged him to act and threatened him with vague criminal consequences if the secretary of state refused to pursue his false claims, at one point warning that Raffensperger was taking \u2018a big risk,\u2019\u201d Gardner continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Throughout the call, Raffensperger and his office\u2019s general counsel rejected Trump\u2019s assertions, explaining that the president is relying on debunked conspiracy theories and that President-elect Joe Biden\u2019s 11,779-vote victory in Georgia was fair and accurate,\u201d the report added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>January 9, 2021 \u2014 The Washington Post cites anonymous source, claiming that Trump told investigator to \u201cfind the fraud\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On January 9, Amy Gardner published another piece for the Washington Post. According to Vox, this report stated that \u201c<\/span><span>President Donald Trump pressured a top Georgia state election investigator, who was in charge of looking into allegations of vote irregularities in the 2020 presidential election, to \u2018find the fraud\u2019 in a late December phone call.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Vox <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2021\/1\/9\/22222351\/trump-georgia-lead-election-investigator\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> continued, saying that \u201cThe Post withheld the name of the Georgia official, citing \u2018the risk of threats and harassment directed at election officials,\u2019 but describing the person as \u2018investigations chief for the Georgia secretary of state\u2019s office.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Washington Post piece also implied that Trump\u2019s alleged actions are tantamount to obstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFormer federal prosecutor in New York, and onetime attorney on the Watergate prosecution team, Nick Akerman told the Post that Trump\u2019s call with the election investigator could amount to election fraud, though it may be difficult to prove,\u201d the Vox report added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c\u2018Oh my god, of course that\u2019s obstruction \u2014 any way you cut it,\u2019 he told the Post.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>March 11, 2021 \u2014 The Wall Street Journal releases December 23 recording<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>In an exclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/recording-of-trump-phone-call-to-georgia-lead-investigator-reveals-new-details-11615411561\">piece<\/a> titled, \u201cTrump Call to Georgia Lead Investigator Reveals New Details,\u201d the Wall Street Journal released an audio recording of the six-minute call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>Then-President Donald Trump urged the chief investigator of the Georgia Secretary of State\u2019s office to look for fraud during an audit of mail-in ballots in a suburban Atlanta county, on a phone call he made to her in late December,\u201d the report began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDuring the six-minute call, which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Trump repeatedly said that he won Georgia. \u2018Something bad happened,\u2019 he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2018When the right answer comes out, you\u2019ll be praised,\u2019 Mr. Trump told the chief investigator, Frances Watson,\u201d the report continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cShe responded: \u2018I can assure you that our team and the [Georgia Bureau of Investigation], that we are only interested in the truth and finding the information that is based on the facts.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Wall Street Journal piece referenced the Washington Post\u2019s January report, but did not point out that the Post\u2019s claims were unsubstantiated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Washington Post reported on the call in January, but this is the first time the recording has been released,\u201d the report added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>March 11 \u2014 The Washington Post retracts the central claim<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 11, the Washington Post updated the January 9 article, whose title is now, \u201cTrump pressured a Georgia elections investigator in a separate call legal experts say could amount to obstruction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to altering the story itself, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-call-georgia-investigator\/2021\/01\/09\/7a55c7fa-51cf-11eb-83e3-322644d82356_story.html\">correction<\/a> was added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em><span>\u201cCorrection: Two months after publication of this story, the Georgia secretary of state released an audio recording of President Donald Trump\u2019s December phone call with the state\u2019s top elections investigator. The recording revealed that The Post misquoted Trump\u2019s comments on the call, based on information provided by a source. Trump did not tell the investigator to \u2018find the fraud\u2019 or say she would be \u2018a national hero\u2019 if she did so. Instead, Trump urged the investigator to scrutinize ballots in Fulton County, Ga., asserting she would find \u2018dishonesty\u2019 there.
