Also known as the Remain in Mexico policy, it was intended to deter asylum seekers from coming to America and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-immigration-asylum\/as-biden-winds-down-mexico-program-many-migrants-on-u-s-border-left-in-limbo-idUSKBN2B419F\">according<\/a> to Reuters, \u201caimed to curb the release of thousands of migrants who had entered the United States to claim asylum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2021\/1\/20\/22241651\/biden-remain-mexico-mpp-migrant-protection-protocols\">advised<\/a> migrants who are not enrolled in the MPP program to \u201cremain where they are, pending further official information from U.S. government officials.\u201d The agency said those currently making their way to the border would not be eligible for Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/15\/politics\/dick-durbin-immigration-pathway\/index.html\">proposed<\/a> pathway to citizenship for 11 million unlawfully present immigrants already in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.4105571847507\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OIM_Mexico?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OIM_Mexico<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AcnurMexico?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AcnurMexico<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNICEFMexico?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UNICEFMexico<\/a> today are preparing the first groups of asylum-seekers in Matamoros to cross the US border, marking the end of a policy that forced people to wait for their immigration hearings in Mexico: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Qqxnjcx6Ge\">https:\/\/t.co\/Qqxnjcx6Ge<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/habBd80sQV\">pic.twitter.com\/habBd80sQV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 IOM \u2013 UN Migration (@UNmigration) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNmigration\/status\/1364590773912666122?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In February, the Biden administration announced new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/ice-deportations-immigration-arrests\/2021\/03\/09\/af27b164-80fa-11eb-bb5a-ad9a91faa4ef_story.html\">temporary<\/a> guidelines that scaled back ICE enforcement that limited arrests and deportations. Immigration hawks complain that the new guidance will prevent ICE agents and officers from doing their jobs \u2014 in essence, abolishing ICE without actually abolishing it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe men and women of ICE, they took an oath to enforce immigration laws,\u201d said Thomas Homan, who served as acting ICE director under former President Trump. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate they can\u2019t do the job. \u2026 And it\u2019s unfortunate that many criminals are going to be walking the streets of America because this administration simply thinks they\u2019re not important enough to take off the streets.\u201d \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Field officers have been instructed to seek pre-approval from supervisors before making arrests of non-citizens convicted of other crimes, such as minor drug offenses, immigration offenses, and driving under the influence. In practice, that means ICE arrests would be limited largely to immigrants who have been convicted of felony offenses and are already detained in federal or state prisons.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some states have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/ice-deportations-immigration-arrests\/2021\/03\/09\/af27b164-80fa-11eb-bb5a-ad9a91faa4ef_story.html\">extended<\/a> a lawsuit against the Biden administration to block the new ICE guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/15\/us\/politics\/biden-immigration-plan-bill.html\">reports<\/a> that \u201cthousands more migrants, many of them unaccompanied children,\u201d have been \u201cshowing up at the border daily\u201d as Democrats prepare to push Biden\u2019s \u2018path to citizenship\u2019 plan through the House. The outlet quoted Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, who described the situation at the border as \u201cout of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you legalize anybody, sending another incentive to keep coming, until you stop the flow?\u201d Graham said.<\/p>\n<p>The Times reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8.309462915601\">\n<p><em>The surge in migration has been fueled in part by natural disasters and the pandemic\u2019s toll on the economy in Central America, as well as violence and poverty in the region. But it is also the result of a&nbsp;<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/28\/world\/americas\/biden-immigration-reform.html\">perception among some migrants<\/a>&nbsp;that Mr. Biden is working to unwind many of former President Donald J. Trump\u2019s most draconian immigration policies and taking a more humane approach.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another NY Times article featured migrants who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/14\/world\/americas\/mexico-border-biden.html\">believe<\/a> Biden \u201cpromised\u201d them they would be allowed to enter America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/immigrants-swarming-u-s-mexico-border-say-biden-encouraged-them-to-come\">Immigrants Swarming U.S.-Mexico Border Say Biden Encouraged Them To Come<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/immigrants-swarming-u-s-mexico-border-say-biden-encouraged-them-to-come\">reported<\/a> on Monday, Border Patrol agents \u201csay that some 100,000 foreigners came to the border in February alone, and after weeks of claiming all is well, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Saturday acknowledged that \u2018record numbers\u2019 of foreigners are overwhelming U.S. agencies, prompting the department to call in help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Border Patrol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/immigration\/2021\/03\/15\/mccarthy-goes-to-the-border-to-accuse-biden-of-enflaming-immigration-crisis\/\">said<\/a> the 100,441 people that tried to enter the country unlawfully last month represented a 28% increase over January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear we need to work more on getting the message out and being very clear, now is not the time to come,\u201d White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/foxsanantonio.com\/news\/local\/biden-admins-message-amidst-border-crisis-is-absurd-says-former-cbp-commissioner\">said<\/a> last week. \u201cThe majority of people who come to the border have been turned away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and other GOP elected officials visited an over-capacity migrant detention center near the U.S.-Mexico border on Monday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.0676328502415\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What&#8217;s happening at the border is more than a crisis.
