House Republicans later announced they would cancel votes for next week altogether, leaving seven appropriations bills on the table for when they return from recess.

The schedule has left some lawmakers upset with the lack of progress, especially as it becomes increasingly likely Congress will drop plans to pass a budget and will instead punt the deadline until past the November election.

“[We’re] trying to pass 12 separate Republican appropriation bills, that the Democrat-controlled Senate will NEVER vote on,” Rep. After voting on Thursday morning, they departed Washington with less than half of their annual spending bills finalized, despite an ambitious schedule aimed at passing all 12 bills by the end of the month. Now, they have only three weeks to approve some form of spending legislation to keep the government running before the end of fiscal year 2024. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) had previously shared a proposed timeline with GOP members in May, aiming to complete all appropriations bills in June and July. The process began with the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations bill, which was passed in the week of June 3, followed by the National Defense Authorization Act the following week, and then bills for the departments of Homeland Security and Defense. However, on July 11, the House encountered a setback when it failed to pass the appropriations bill for the legislative branch, as 10 Republicans joined nearly all Democrats in opposing it. House leaders had planned to advance four more appropriations bills this week but ended up withdrawing all but one from consideration: the Interior and Energy bills. Subsequently, House Republicans announced the cancellation of all votes for the following week, leaving seven appropriations bills pending for when they return from recess. This situation has frustrated some lawmakers due to the lack of progress, especially as it appears increasingly likely that Congress will abandon plans for a budget and instead push the deadline past the November elections. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) expressed her concerns on social media, questioning the purpose of attempting to pass 12 separate Republican appropriation bills that the Democrat-controlled Senate would likely not support. She noted that it seems inevitable they will have to vote on a continuing resolution by September 30, the deadline for government funding, despite this not being openly discussed. The ambitious goal of passing all appropriations bills before August 1 was seen as a test of GOP leadership, especially after last year’s delays in government funding. However, they faced similar challenges as in the previous year, including internal party disagreements over contentious policy proposals included in the spending bills. These proposals, such as a ban on mail-delivery abortion pills and cuts to key climate initiatives, have divided GOP lawmakers, particularly those in competitive districts. Even if the House had managed to pass all appropriations bills before the recess, it remains uncertain whether the Senate would have acted quickly, as Democratic leaders and the White House have indicated they would postpone the process until after the November elections, when the political landscape for 2025 will be clearer

[3653,4762,27545
post-2308208","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-house","tag-legislation","tag-recess
["GET
