That figure is based on the number of votes cast during the last gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n<p>The Building Industry Association of Washington, Let&rsquo;s Go Washington, the Washington Hospitality Association and other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.sos.wa.gov\/_assets\/elections\/initiatives\/finaltext_3177.pdf?_gl=1*xd4xmx*_ga*MjEyNzcyMDY0OS4xNjk1ODYxMDM2*_ga_7B08VE04WV*MTcxNDc2NDQzNC4xMDkuMC4xNzE0NzY0Njk0LjAuMC4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>I-2066<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;backers celebrated the news<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When we launched this initiative with only 50 days to collect signatures, we knew the people of Washington opposed the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-city-to-prohibit-natural-gas-for-new-buildings\/\" title=\"New York City To Prohibit Natural Gas For New Buildings\">banning natural gas<\/a>, but the support for this initiative shows just how strongly they feel about protecting natural gas for heating and cooking in their homes and businesses,&rdquo; BIAW Executive Vice President&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biaw.com\/staff\/greg-lane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Greg Lane<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&ldquo;Now voters have the chance to protect their natural gas and avoid costly conversions to all-electric by voting yes on I-2066 in November.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>If passed, I-2066 would prohibit&nbsp;the state and all local governments from banning, restricting or discouraging the use of natural gas in new or existing homes or commercial buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimately successful effort to get I-2066 on the ballot was prompted by concerns over the passage of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1589&amp;Year=2023&amp;Initiative=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>House Bill 1589<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;during this year&rsquo;s legislative session.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HB 1589 allows Puget Sound Energy, the state&rsquo;s largest utility, to start planning how to move away from natural gas as part of Gov. Jay Inslee&rsquo;s efforts to fight climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Three Republican-backed initiatives are already on the ballot to be decided by voters this November.
