Grassley\u200b noted in his letter that the\u2063 Secret\u200b Service had been\u200d asking for \u2064more resources for \u2062&ldquo;reduced staffing,&rdquo; citing a report that the \u200cSecret Service had \u2062eliminated two \u200dteams of six agents each from the Pittsburgh office.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley&rsquo;s letter\u2063 also referenced reports \u200bthat\u2064 the Secret Service had been\u200c trying to get access to\u200c drones. One report \u2062stated that the Secret Service was considering acquiring drones \u2064for \u200buse in\u200c protecting both Trump and rival Joe \u2063Biden.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;The lack of drone capabilities may have played \u200ba \u2062role in failing to prevent an\u2064 attempted assassination against a \u200dformer President of the United \u200cStates,&rdquo; Grassley wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley asked Rowe and Mayorkas to provide all \u2062records related to the security plan for\u2064 Trump&rsquo;s rally, including the \u2064location of\u200c all federal personnel, the deployment\u200c of drones,\u2064 the\u200c use of \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-shoots-down-21-houthi-drones-missiles-launched-in-complex-attack-on-shipping-lanes\/\" title=\"U.S. thwarts 21 Houthi drones, missiles in intricate shipping lane assault\">counter-drone measures<\/a>, and any documented communication with \u2062law enforcement requesting access to drones. Grassley\u2064 requested\u2064 a response to his questions \u200dby August 5.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley\u200d concluded his letter \u2064by stating that the Secret Service&rsquo;s\u2063 &ldquo;repeated failures&rdquo; to properly \u2064secure Trump at the rally &ldquo;put in stark relief the need for a robust review of the Secret Service&rsquo;s operational security capabilities and \u200dinternal processes to prevent future security breaches and attempted assassinations against \u2062our nation&rsquo;s leaders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Secret Service\u2063 has\u200d not yet publicly responded to Grassley&rsquo;s letter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Sen. He also released security plans for the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&ldquo;We NEED detailed answers ASAP on security failures,&rdquo; Grassley <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckGrassley\/status\/1815875286283538663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted<\/a> on X. &ldquo;TRANSPARENCY BRINGS ACCOUNTABILITY.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Grassley <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckGrassley\/status\/1815875737435484582\/photo\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe, Jr., and Department of Homeland Security Director Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday, demanding the Secret Service&rsquo;s &ldquo;operational security plan&rdquo; with &ldquo;locations and roles of all federal personnel&rdquo; staffing Trump&rsquo;s June 13 rally where a gunman <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/13\/trump-wounded-after-gunshots-ring-out-at-pa-rally-defiantly-pumps-fist-after-apparent-assassination-attempt\/#:~:text=Former%20President%20Donald%20Trump%20was,to%20reach%20for%20his%20ear.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shot<\/a> the former president in the ear, wounded two attendees, and killed Corey Comperatore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Grassley said Rowe and Mayorkas have until July 30 to respond. Kimberly Cheatle, Secret Service director at the time of the assassination attempt, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/24\/20-questions-unanswered-after-cheatle-resigns-as-secret-service-director\/#:~:text=Secret%20Service%20Director%20Kimberly%20Cheatle,the%20violent%20incident%20remain%20unanswered.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned<\/a> Tuesday after failing to answer questions from Congress.<\/p>\n<h4>Bodycam Footage<\/h4>\n<p>Grassley released bodycam <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckGrassley\/status\/1815875286283538663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">footage<\/a> on X, showing Secret Service speaking with Beaver County, Pennsylvania, police after taking out the shooter.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A Beaver County sniper saw him, sent the pictures out. This is him,&rdquo; a local officer said, gesturing to the deceased shooter.<\/p>\n<p>The officer said a Beaver County sniper had sent pictures of the shooter on his bike before the attempted assassination, but lost track of him. Police <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/report-three-counter-snipers-were-in-building-trump-shooter-used-took-photos-of-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> saw the shooter with a rangefinder and backpack and relayed this to a &ldquo;command center.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The officer showed a Secret Service agent the pictures.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Yep, I got that one,&rdquo; the agent said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Secret Service agent said one person was detained, and a local officer said two people were detained.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The people detained were filming. Maybe they were involved, maybe they weren&rsquo;t,&rdquo; the agent said. &ldquo;The guys that saw them filming were like, &lsquo;They were filming us, then filming the guy up on the roof, then filming us. Then when shots started firing, they tried to run away.&rsquo; Isn&rsquo;t that what everybody would do that had a phone?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Several people <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FunkerActual\/status\/1812652950143086723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filmed<\/a> the shooter beforehand and tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senators-report-shocking-jan-6-intelligence-failures-by-fbi-dhs\/\" title=\"Senators uncover alarming intelligence lapses on Jan. 6 by FBI, DHS.\">warn law enforcement<\/a>. According to ABC News, Secret Service agents <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/trump-assassination-attempt-investigation-continues-new-details\/story?id=112020474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saw<\/a> the shooter on the roof 20 minutes before he tried to take Trump&rsquo;s life.<\/p>\n<p>Over the radio, a voice can be heard asking for &ldquo;access to a drone to clear this water tower.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Raising Questions<\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>Grassley included other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_to_dhs_usss_-_operational_security_plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evidence<\/a> in the letter to Rowe and Mayorkas, including a diagram showing &ldquo;state law enforcement sectors&rdquo; for the rally ordered by importance. He asked if the document was accurate, and told the Secret Service to provide &ldquo;equivalent records.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The diagram did not include the shooter&rsquo;s building in a security sector. It also shows more apparent security gaps, such as no security sectors around other nearby buildings, and the fourth most important sector &mdash; an open area around ponds &mdash; directly adjoining the most important sector &mdash; the stage and audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Grassley&rsquo;s letter also included a personnel list for the rally, including Butler and Beaver County police, Secret Service counter-snipers, and most notably a &ldquo;counter UAS&rdquo; &mdash; or anti-drone &mdash; operator.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Yet, it&rsquo;s reported that the gunman flew a video capable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-shooter-flew-drone-venue-hours-attempted-assassination-source-sa-%20rcna162817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drone<\/a> over the event site hours before former President Trump took the stage, which may have helped him plan the attack,&rdquo; Grassley wrote. &ldquo;Is that reporting accurate? Is the below document accurate?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Grassley referenced his July 16 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/17\/grassley-launches-probe-into-monumental-security-failure-by-secret-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Mayorkas and Cheatle requesting relevant information. He also said he asked them July 20 for the total number of federal personnel at Trump&rsquo;s rally, as well as the number of &ldquo;post standers&rdquo; at Trump&rsquo;s event versus the nearby Jill Biden event.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Secret Service must provide its operational security plan showing the locations and roles of all federal personnel assigned,&rdquo; Grassley wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He demanded to know things like whether law enforcement deployed drones or counter-drone measures for the rally, if there was an &ldquo;unauthorized UAS intrusion within the restricted airspace,&rdquo; if they cleared the nearby water tower beforehand, and if the water tower had any role in the attempted assassination against Trump.<\/p>\n<h4>Negligent Security<\/h4>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s security detail had reportedly been <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/13\/democrats-started-trying-to-strip-trumps-secret-service-protection-just-months-before-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asking<\/a> for increased resources for weeks before the rally, only to be denied by the DHS. Secret Service Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecretSvcSpox\/status\/1812451649387933912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> this was false, despite The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/20\/trump-secret-service-security-attempted-assassination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirming<\/a> it a week after The Federalist&rsquo;s reporting.<\/p>\n<p>The Secret Service held two briefings July 8 with &ldquo;stakeholders,&rdquo; including FBI staff, to discuss stretching security to cover the Trump rally, the nearby Jill Biden event, and a North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting in Washington, D.C., according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JudiciaryGOP\/status\/1813997424362606762\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> from the House Judiciary Committee to FBI Director Christopher Wray last week.<\/p>\n<p>Guglielmi, the Monday after the assassination attempt, also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecretSvcSpox\/status\/1812676305860645158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denied<\/a> that &ldquo;resources were diverted&rdquo; from Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Local police reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/17\/local-police-told-secret-service-they-didnt-have-manpower-to-secure-building-used-by-trumps-would-be-assassin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the Secret Service beforehand they did not have enough &ldquo;manpower&rdquo; to secure the building from which the shooter fired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The shooter flew a drone over the rally grounds just hours before Trump&rsquo;s speech, The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/trump-gunman-flew-drone-over-rally-site-hours-before-attempted-assassination-2d0e2e1a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> last week. He also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/19\/report-trump-rally-assassin-hid-gun-on-site-before-the-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hid<\/a> his gun before the shooting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>At the rally, officials left a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/bidens-team-deliberately-kneecapped-trumps-security-to-allow-an-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clear<\/a> line of sight from the shooter&rsquo;s rooftop to Trump. Meanwhile, three counter-snipers were reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/report-three-counter-snipers-were-in-building-trump-shooter-used-took-photos-of-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stationed<\/a> inside &mdash; but not on &mdash; the building.<\/p>\n<p>Cheatle claimed officials did not place snipers on the shooter&rsquo;s roof because it was &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/secret-service-director-we-didnt-put-snipers-on-the-roof-because-it-was-kind-of-sloped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sloped<\/a>.&rdquo; But it was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/17\/any-roofer-worth-his-salt-knows-secret-services-sloped-roof-excuse-is-nonsense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly flat<\/a>, and easily <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/14\/us-news\/horrifying-video-shows-would-be-assassin-open-fire-on-former-president-trump-from-rooftop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">navigable<\/a> for law enforcement after the rally, as the bodycam footage from Grassley shows. Counter-snipers at the same rally were stationed on a roof with a more significant slope.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Secret Service agents knew about the shooter, but Trump continued speaking uninterrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Then shots rang out, grazing the former president&rsquo;s head. Trump ducked and Secret Service agents <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CollinRugg\/status\/1813684681923281094\/video\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dove<\/a> on top of him. They left his head unprotected while ushering him to his vehicle. One female agent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/world\/north-america\/shooting-at-trump-rally-in-pennsylvania\/video\/4bf8228ebfe28a3a921393bb2b0cc1cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fumbled<\/a> with her holster, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CollinRugg\/status\/1813684681923281094\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another<\/a> seemed to stumble back and forth, and another dropped her sunglasses and put them back on.<\/p>\n<p>Cheatle, under increasing scrutiny, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/23\/secret-service-director-kimberly-cheatle-resigns-in-disgrace-more-than-a-week-after-attempt-on-trumps-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned<\/a> Tuesday.
