Robert Menendez of New Jersey has set a date for resigning his post, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-trumps-impeachment-defense-team-collapses-ahead-of-senate-trial-top-lawyers-out\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Trump\u2019s Impeachment Defense Team Collapses Ahead Of Senate Trial, Top Lawyers Out\">multiple news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez will resign effective Aug. 20, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/democratic-sen-robert-menendez-will-resign-month-corruption-convction-rcna163285\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet said the U.S. Senate confirmed Tuesday afternoon that it had received Menendez&rsquo; letter of resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez &mdash; who until recently was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee &mdash; was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/democratic-senator-convicted-16-counts-including-bribery-dems-wish-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a> in a jury trial last week on 16 federal counts of bribery and corruption after being accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-senator-bob-menendez-charged-with-corruption\/\" title=\"Democrat Senator Bob Menendez Accused of Corruption\">accepting gold bars<\/a> and cash from representatives of Egypt and Qatar in exchange for favorable treatment, according to NBC.<\/p>\n<p>Charges included bribery, extortion, wire fraud, obstruction of justice and acting as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>  <script> \t\t\t\tif( ! getCookie( 'ff_subbed' ) ) if( typeof FFADS.replace_ict !='undefined' ) if( FFADS.replace_ict ) eval( FFADS.replace_ict ); \t\t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>He could be facing decades in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chuck-schumer-drops-bomb-bob-menendez-criminal-conviction-land-nj-senator-prison-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prison<\/a> when he is sentenced Oct. 29.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez has said he plans to fight to overturn the convictions, but added that he is stepping aside to further the cause of party unity, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/07\/23\/senator-bob-menendez-resigns-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;While I fully intend to appeal the jury&rsquo;s verdict, all the way and including to the Supreme Court, I do not want the Senate to be involved in a lengthy process that will detract from its important work,&rdquo; his resignation letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez had reportedly been receiving strong political pressure to take the action to strengthen his party&rsquo;s hold on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-backed-navy-seal-tim-sheehy-wins-primary-bid-flip-senate-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate seat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[H]is decision to do so allows Democratic New Jersey Gov.
