Kelly and Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) are <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/live-updates\/biden-drops-out-updates?utm_source=face%5B%E2%80%A6%5Dbcnews\/library\/media\/434489227&amp;entryId=112193865&amp;id=112113289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reportedly<\/a> the leading contenders to be Harris&rsquo;s running mate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/schiff-nadler-call-flynn-pardon-abuse-of-power\/\" title=\"Schiff, Nadler Call Flynn Pardon &#039;Abuse of Power&#039;\">2016 presidential election<\/a>, Arizonans reelected Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-mccain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>John McCain<\/a> (R-AZ). In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/caitlyn-jenner-rules-out-running-for-governor-amidst-california-recall-effort\/\" title=\"Caitlyn Jenner Rules Out Running For Governor Amidst California Recall Effort\">2018 midterm elections<\/a>, Arizona elected then-Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Kyrsten-Sinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kyrsten Sinema<\/a> to replace incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/16\/jeff-flake-turkey-arizona-resign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Jeff Flake<\/a>, who did not seek reelection.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, however, McCain died, and then-Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/doug-ducey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Doug Ducey<\/a> appointed former Sen. Jon Kyl to a second stint in the upper chamber to take over his seat. Kyl resigned in 2019, and Ducey appointed then-Rep. Martha McSally to the seat. Because it was an appointment, it triggered a special election in 2020, when Kelly, then best known as a former astronaut, defeated McSally.<\/p>\n<p>Still, because McCain&rsquo;s seat was set to go through 2022, the election for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lisa-murkowski-takes-lead-in-senate-race\/\" title=\"Lisa Murkowski Takes Lead in Senate Race\">full-term senator<\/a> was always set to take place during the 2022 midterm elections. Kelly won that election over Republican challenger Blake Masters, who is running in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3087128\/trump-vance-make-competing-endorsements-in-fiery-arizona-primary-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>a crowded primary<\/a> to represent Arizona&rsquo;s 8th Congressional District in the House.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Arizonans will pick Sinema&rsquo;s replacement as she is retiring. Arizona&rsquo;s primary is being held next week, but it is expected that Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/ruben-gallego\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Ruben Gallego<\/a> (D-AZ) will become the Democratic nominee and TV anchor-turned-politician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/kari-lake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Kari Lake<\/a> will become the Republican nominee.<\/p>\n<p>So, if Harris and Kelly were to be on the Democratic ticket and win, Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) would need to appoint someone to take Kelly&rsquo;s seat. Like what happened in 2020, that scenario would trigger a special for the next cycle &mdash; 2026.
