And what does that mean for Harris&rsquo; bid for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/section\/news\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>White House<\/a>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In traditional American politics, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-england-taking-center-stage-as-an-ultra-right-versus-ultra-left-battleground\/\" title=\"New England Taking Center Stage as an Ultra-Right Versus Ultra-Left Battleground\">party favorite<\/a> and all-but-declared nominee heads into their party&rsquo;s convention, where they are resoundingly confirmed to become the nominee by the majority of delegates. Such was the case earlier this month as Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3083310\/trump-officially-nominee-rnc-2024-republican-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>chose former President Donald Trump<\/a> to lead the top of the ticket at their Milwaukee convention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vice President Kamala Harris embraces President Joe Biden after a speech on healthcare in Raleigh, N.C., Tuesday, March. 26, 2024. If no candidate receives a majority of the delegates&rsquo; votes, then the convention is considered &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-republican-candidates-criticize-vice-president-kamala-harris-for-her-role-as-border-czar\/\" title=\"Senate Republican candidates criticize Vice President Kamala Harris for her role as &quot;border czar.\">open&#038;rdquo<\/a>; and delegates that were pledged to a particular candidate are released. Candidates then seek to win over delegates and clinch the majority of support during subsequent rounds of voting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the last century of American politics, that&rsquo;s rarely happened, although in a rare twist of irony, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Democratic-Party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democratic Party<\/a> suffered a chaotic brokered convention exactly 100 years ago. The last time a convention had to go past the first ballot was in 1952.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Biden&rsquo;s decision to back Harris means his delegates are likely guaranteed to rally around the Vice President. The incumbent president won the vast majority of the 4,000 delegates in the primaries, giving Harris a vast lead and almost certain victory over any other candidates. Only 1,976 delegates are needed to win the nomination.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, formerly pledged Biden delegates are not legally bound to support Harris, leaving the door open for a different candidate to gather support during an open convention.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Intra-party squabbling could lead to a chaotic open convention, where potentially, candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3065597\/democrats-calling-for-biden-replacement-face-obstacles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>floated<\/a> as alternatives to Harris could mount their own challenge for the nomination. Names including Govs. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3072633\/whitmer-complains-distraction-speculation-replace-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Gretchen Whitmer<\/a> (D-MI), J.B.
