(AP) &mdash;<\/strong> A proposed constitutional amendment that would require voters to show photo identification at the polls has qualified for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>November ballot<\/a> in Nevada, the state&rsquo;s top election official announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The measure also calls for an extra layer of identification verification for mail ballots, such as the last four digits of a driver&rsquo;s license or Social Security number.<\/p>\n<p>The approval adds to several ballot initiatives that voters will choose alongside tight races up and down Nevada&rsquo;s November ballot. This includes measures that would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-nevada-constitutional-amendment-c85970d01e74a79cc34d8e094075c9f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>further enshrine Nevada&rsquo;s abortion rights<\/a>, institute new election processes that include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ranked-choice-voting-ballot-initiatives-alaska-7c5197e993ba8c5dcb6f176e34de44a6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ranked choice voting<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/united-states-government-nevada-language-slavery-constitutions-09504d83f139ce3f9f8b57ace7624b75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>remove language from the state constitution<\/a>&nbsp;that includes slavery and involuntary servitude as a form of criminal punishment.<\/p>\n<p>If passed in November, the voter ID measure would also have to be approved by voters in 2026 to amend the state constitution.<\/p>\n<p>County election officials verified about 132,000 total signatures that organizers submitted, according to the secretary of state&rsquo;s office. They surpassed the nearly 26,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arizona-holds-the-school-choice-crown-but-can-it-keep-it\/\" title=\"Arizona Holds The School Choice Crown, But Can It Keep It?\">000 valid signatures needed<\/a> from each of the state&rsquo;s four petition districts.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of voter ID requirements said they add necessary security and ensure that only qualified voters can cast ballots. Opponents argued that the requirements make it more difficult for people to vote, especially the elderly, those with disabilities and those without driver&rsquo;s licenses. The NAACP and other civil rights groups&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/north-carolina-voter-identification-mandate-trial-6853de0a79b9bda8bf28c36942f12e10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>have argued<\/a>&nbsp;that it disproportionately harms Black and Latino voters.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2023 legislative session, voter ID became a partisan issue between Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo and the Democratic-controlled legislature.
