Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) is demanding that Garland facilitate \u201cproper oversight\u201d from the Senate into whether the FBI truly investigated sexual assault allegations levied against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh or whether it conducted a \u201cfake\u201d probe.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Senate has yet to officially announce an investigation, Democrats have had Kavanaugh in their sights since his Senate confirmation hearings in 2019, and Whitehouse clearly believes a Senate probe \u201cinto questions about how thoroughly the FBI investigated Kavanaugh\u201d is on the horizon, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/fbi-facing-allegation-2018-background-070017507.html?soc_src=social-sh&amp;soc_trk=tw&amp;tsrc=twtr\">per Yahoo News<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kavanaugh was, of course, accused of sexually assaulting Dr. Christine Blasey Ford when the pair were teenagers. The FBI was tasked with an emergency investigation into Dr. Ford\u2019s claims, which they completed in just days. The investigation, which involved a number of interviews with both Kavanaugh\u2019s and Dr. Ford\u2019s contemporaries of the time, \u201cmultiple committee interviews, over 1,200 questions for the record and over a half-million pages of documents,\u201d according to then-President Donald Trump, produced no evidence of a sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI also reportedly looked into claims made by Deborah Ramirez, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/senate-democrats-investigate-a-new-allegation-of-sexual-misconduct-from-the-supreme-court-nominee-brett-kavanaughs-college-years-deborah-ramirez\">who told the New Yorker<\/a> that she was forced to have a sexual interaction with Kavanaugh when the pair were students at Yale Law School in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven before the material was sent to the Senate,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/03\/us\/politics\/trump-republicans-kavanaugh-confirmation.html\">the New York Times noted in 2019<\/a>, \u201cDemocrats complained that the F.B.I. investigation had been too narrow and failed to look extensively enough at the allegations lodged against Judge Kavanaugh, 53, a 12-year veteran of the federal appeals court in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further Democrat inquiries to the FBI produced few results.<\/p>\n<p>Whitehouse says he is \u201cseeking answers as to \u2018how, why, and at whose behest\u2019 the FBI conducted a \u2018fake\u2019 investigation\u201d and \u201cif standard procedures were violated, including standards for following allegations gathered through FBI \u2018tip lines.&#8217;\u201d He also wants to know why certain witnesses, who claimed to have credible information about Kavanaugh\u2019s alleged history of sexual assault, were turned away from giving testimony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was unique behavior in my experience, as the Bureau is usually amenable to information and evidence; but in this matter, the shutters were closed, the drawbridge drawn up, and there was no point of entry by which members of the public or Congress could provide information to the FBI,\u201d Whitehouse wrote to Garland Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/dozens-potential-sources-information-have-not-been-contacted-fbi-kavanaugh-n916146\">NBC News report<\/a> at the time suggests that the FBI did not speak to \u201c20 individuals\u201d who knew either Kavanaugh or Ramirez, \u201cincluding Kavanaugh\u2019s roommate at the time and a former close Ramirez friend.\u201d It may have been because evidence of the interaction was scanty.
