She has been charged with felony\u200d assault and other offenses but\u200b has\u2064 pleaded not guilty. The incident occurred when police were \u200ctrying\u2064 to\u2062 assist \u200ba woman who had fallen, and\u2062 Zhuang allegedly\u200b resisted arrest\u2063 and bit a police \u200cchief, leaving a mark and drawing blood. The NYPD Chief\u200d of Patrol expressed\u200b shock at Zhuang&#8217;s actions, \u200dgiven her past positive relationship with the police department. Police were trying to help a woman who had fallen, and officers grabbed Zhuang in an attempt to get her away from the barriers.<\/p>\n<p>During that exchange, Zhuang bit a police chief and resisted arrest, <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/brooklyn\/politics\/2024\/07\/17\/brooklyn-councilwoman-charged-with-biting-officer-at-protest--nypd-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>according<\/a> to a New York City Hall spokesperson. Newsom Announces Statewide Vaccine Mandate For California Healthcare Workers\">day care centers<\/a>, senior centers,&rdquo; Zhuang <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/susanzhuangnyc\/status\/1812238491163496699\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>posted<\/a> Saturday on X, citing a <em>New York Post<\/em> report about rising arrests near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-schools-facing-challenges-with-migrant-children\/\" title=\"NYC Schools Facing Challenges with Migrant Children\">city homeless shelters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>City Hall condemned the violence and expressed the importance of respecting &ldquo;city workers doing their jobs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Violence is never acceptable and it is always important to respect city workers doing their jobs,&rdquo; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-council-asks-states-highest-court-to-let-non-citizens-vote-in-local-elections\/\" title=\"NYC Council requests permission for non-citizens to vote in local elections from the state&#039;s highest court\">city council spokesperson<\/a> said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/press\/2024\/07\/17\/2649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>statement<\/a>. &ldquo;We have seen the public footage circulating of today&rsquo;s incident, and will be seeking to learn more about the details. The Council will respect the processes of the NYPD and Brooklyn District Attorney with respect to this matter.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>New York Mayor Eric Adams, who spent more than two decades as a police officer, reacted to the councilwoman&rsquo;s arrest.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;First of all, I hope the chief is okay,&rdquo; Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/555-24\/transcript-mayor-adams-appears-live-pix11-s-pix11-morning-news-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> PIX11 in an interview. &ldquo;It was a pretty nasty bite in his forearm. I was a little surprised that this happened with the councilwoman. She&rsquo;s extremely supportive of police. These are emotional issues and no one wants [a] shelter open in the area.
