The Chief Justice of South Korea&#8217;s Supreme Court stated that\u2064 denying benefits to LGBT couples was a form of prejudice, even though same-sex marriages are not legally recognized in \u2063the country. It was a reinforcement of a decision in 2023 by the Seoul High Court that declared an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/south-koreas-top-court-upholds-landmark-ruling-over-same-sex-spousal-state-2024-07-18\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LGBT couple<\/a>, So Sung-wook and Kim Yong-min, should have access to benefits from South Korea&rsquo;s National Health Insurance Service. The couple initially filed the suit in 2021 after the NHIS canceled benefits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/whistleblower-democrats-stole-votes-for-joe-biden-from-every-developmentally-disabled-person-in-milwaukee-homes-she-spoke-with\/\" title=\"Whistleblower: Democrats Stole Votes for Joe Biden from Every Developmentally Disabled Person in Milwaukee Homes She Spoke With\">couldn&#038;rsquo<\/a>;t believe when I heard the ruling,&rdquo; Kim told Reuters in an interview. &ldquo;I was extremely happy, and I started crying. &ldquo;It took four years to earn this dependent status. We need to fight harder to legalize same-sex marriage going forward.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"tpd-featured-video featured-post-video in-content bridtv\">\n<div id=\"Brid_1682039\" class=\"brid\" style=\"width:1280;height:720;\"> <\/div>\n<div class=\"tpd-featured-video-placeholder\" style=\"position:relative;overflow:hidden;width:100%;padding-top:56.25%;background-color:#000;\">\n<div style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;bottom:0;right:0;width:100%;height:100%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jo Hee-de, South Korea&rsquo;s Chief Justice of its supreme court, claimed excluding the couple from receiving benefits was a form of prejudice. Hee-de declared that even though no current laws in the country exist that refer to LGBT relationships, denying them benefits because of their sexual orientation was a discriminatory act, Reuters reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ruling was made even though LGBT marriages are not legally recognized in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is an act of discrimination that violates human dignity and value, the right to pursue happiness, freedom of privacy, and the right to equality before the law, and the degree of violation is serious,&rdquo; Hee-de said, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>The court&rsquo;s decision was the first legal recognition of same-sex unions in South Korea. As such, any LGBT couple who wants to get married must do so abroad.
