On Saturday, former President Donald Trump had part of his ear blown off as a result of federal officials&rsquo; refusal to secure the rooftop of a building just 450 feet from a Pennsylvania rally platform. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I do plan to stay on,&rdquo; Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/national-security\/4773978-secret-service-director-will-not-resign-after-attempted-trump-assassination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> ABC News on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The agency chief went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/secret-service-director-who-allowed-shots-at-trump-wont-resign\/\" title=\"Secret Service Director Who Allowed Shots At Trump Won\u2019t Resign\">blame local law enforcement<\/a> in Pennsylvania for the cascade of security lapses that ultimately culminated in the Republican presidential nominee taking a gunshot to the ear and only surviving by a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/miracle-monday-gop-conventiongoers-say-divine-providence-protected-trump-from-near-deadly-bullet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">miracle<\/a>. There was local police in that building &mdash; there was local police in the area that were responsible for the outer perimeter of the building.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Secret Service, however, is ultimately in charge of the overall security plan, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/15\/secret-service-trump-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to The Washington Post, &ldquo;also has primary responsibility for addressing the risk of a long-range shooter and blocking lines of sight, including by instructing local police to secure or stand guard at buildings that could provide an opportunity for an attacker.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Three counter-snipers were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/report-three-counter-snipers-were-in-building-trump-shooter-used-took-photos-of-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">positioned<\/a>&nbsp;in the building underneath the roof from which Saturday&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/secret-service-director-roof-too-steep-for-snipers\/\" title=\"Secret Service Director: Roof Too Steep for Snipers\">gunman fired multiple shots<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpxi.com\/news\/local\/alleged-trump-shooter-spotted-by-law-enforcement-nearly-30-minutes-before-shots-fired-sources-say\/Q6GIK5RP6RBY5PHIMYBNXRTEBI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to Channel 11 News, a local Pennsylvania outlet, law enforcement had spotted the shooter nearly a half hour before Trump was hit. NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-rally-shooting-secret-service-identified-rooftop-security-flaw-rcna161783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> the Secret Service was even made aware of the unique threat presented by the building at the rally &ldquo;days&rdquo; before the event, and yet the Secret Service chief said the reason law enforcement did not secure the rooftop was because it was &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/secret-service-director-we-didnt-put-snipers-on-the-roof-because-it-was-kind-of-sloped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sloped<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>[RELATED:[RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/17\/any-roofer-worth-his-salt-knows-secret-services-sloped-roof-excuse-is-total-nonsense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Any Roofer Worth His Salt Knows Secret Service&rsquo;s &lsquo;Sloped&rsquo; Roof Excuse Is Total Nonsense<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A source also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/13\/democrats-started-trying-to-strip-trumps-secret-service-protection-just-months-before-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> The Federalist that Trump&rsquo;s team had repeatedly pled with the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to beef up security for months but were rebuffed &ldquo;time and again.&rdquo; Former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino said Tuesday an &ldquo;unimpeachable source&rdquo; told him a security guard was supposed to be on the roof left open but &ldquo;didn&rsquo;t show up.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They&rsquo;re now making up excuses saying the pitch of the roof. My source says to me that no one knows why the post didn&rsquo;t show up,&rdquo; Bongino said. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>NEW: Dan Bongino says an &#8220;unimpeachable source&#8221; tells him that someone was supposed to be on the roof where Thomas Crooks shot from but &#8220;didn&#8217;t show up.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Bongino also claimed that the Biden admin is telling the USSS director to keep her mouth shut if she wants to keep her&hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1ZZL1cWaG1\">pic.twitter.com\/1ZZL1cWaG1<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&mdash; Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CollinRugg\/status\/1813372401268531443?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Obama&rsquo;s Secret Service Chief Resigned for Less<\/h2>\n<p>In 2014, then-President Barack Obama&rsquo;s Secret Service director, Julia Pierson, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3453528\/secret-service-julie-pierson-resign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stepped down<\/a> after &ldquo;an armed man managed to jump the White House fence and enter the Executive Mansion.&rdquo; The episode followed reports of an armed security guard who rode an elevator with the president but was not properly vetted by the agency.<\/p>\n<p>So many Secret Service scandals have popped up in recent years that in 2015, The Atlantic published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/03\/secret-service-disaster-timeline\/38https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/03\/secret-service-disaster-timeline\/387643\/7643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timeline<\/a> of agency mishaps. In 2011, gunshots, which the Secret Service mistook for gang-related crossfire, hit the White House; but agents didn&rsquo;t notice until &ldquo;four days later.&rdquo; In 2012, nearly a dozen agents were sent home from a trip to Colombia for hiring as many as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-17747793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 prostitutes<\/a>. In 2013, a supervisor on an elite team was caught trying to reenter a woman&rsquo;s hotel room because he left a bullet there. An investigation found the supervisor and another male officer sent &ldquo;inappropriate messages to a female subordinate.&rdquo; In 2014, three agents were sent home during a presidential trip to the Netherlands &ldquo;after being found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway in Amsterdam.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, four assistant directors for the Secret Service were fired. A fifth had already retired. This was all before Donald Trump was even elected president.<\/p>\n<h2>Agent Prefers &lsquo;Jail Over a Bullet&rsquo; for Trump<\/h2>\n<p>In 2017, one top agent <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/01\/24\/secret-service-agent-ill-go-jail-take-bullet-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a Facebook post that she &ldquo;would take jail time over a bullet&rdquo; for President Trump, or in her words, &ldquo;what I believe to be disaster to this country and the strong and amazing women and minorities who reside here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Hatch Act be damned,&rdquo; wrote Kerry O&rsquo;Grady. &ldquo;I am with Her.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>O&rsquo;Grady was eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/colorado\/news\/top-denver-secret-service-agent-apparently-loses-job-after-anti-trump-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">removed<\/a> from her role as Special Agent in Charge of the agency&rsquo;s Denver operations.<\/p>\n<h2>Purge of J6 Text Messages<\/h2>\n<p>When the since-disbanded House Select Committee on Jan. 6 requested text messages from the Secret Service between Jan. 5, 2021, and Jan. 6, 2021, lawmakers were shocked to receive just one conversation. The agency apparently erased the agency&rsquo;s texts on cell phones just eleven days after the Capitol riot.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, journalist Julie Kelly republished a 2022 article on the saga of the missing text messages on X, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/julie_kelly2\/status\/1813226053353054478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explaining<\/a>, &ldquo;the purge did not happen while Trump or his Homeland Security chief were in charge.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Why the subterfuge? Would the texts finally explain why Kamala Harris, under Secret Service protection at the time, went to the Democratic National Committee headquarters the morning of January 6, the same place where a pipe bomb allegedly was found that afternoon?&rdquo; Kelly asked. &ldquo;How did agents miss the explosive during a security sweep of the premises before she arrived? How did agents not locate the device for more than an hour while Harris remained in the building until law enforcement allegedly found it?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The Cocaine Mystery That Is Not a Mystery<\/h2>\n<p>Last summer, a small bag of cocaine found inside the White House triggered an immediate <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/white-house-suspicious-substance-cocaine-bd7a792357a85453cf55b6c955ff1b4f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evacuation<\/a> while President Joe Biden and his family were at Camp David in Maryland. The discovery also set off a search for the bag&rsquo;s owner. But the investigation into how the illicit substance ended up in what is supposed to be one of the most secure buildings in the world <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/13\/cocaine-cover-up-secret-service-shrugs-off-white-house-white-powder-investigation-over-alleged-lack-of-dna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concluded<\/a> in less than two weeks without ever identifying an official suspect.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Without physical evidence, the investigation will not be able to single out a person of interest from the hundreds of individuals who passed through the vestibule where the cocaine was discovered,&rdquo; the Secret Service said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The most obvious culprit also had a plea deal on the line and a father in the Oval Office. <\/p>\n<p>Just weeks before the cocaine surfaced, President Biden&rsquo;s son Hunter had landed a plea deal with federal prosecutors in Delaware that included <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/20\/hunter-bidens-wrist-slap-on-gun-tax-crimes-is-a-complete-smokescreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amnesty<\/a> for a federal gun charge pursuant to 24 consecutive months of sobriety. The plea deal was ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/07\/26\/hunter-biden-plea-deal-derailed-by-federal-judge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scrapped<\/a> later in the summer, and Hunter Biden was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/11\/hunters-conviction-is-a-fig-leaf-to-cover-the-biden-familys-more-serious-misdeeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convicted<\/a> on three federal firearm charges because he purchased a gun as a drug addict.<\/p>\n<p>If the Secret Service had presented evidence that the mysterious cocaine found at the White House belonged to Hunter Biden, who has written extensively about his struggles with drug addiction, the agency might have derailed Hunter Biden&rsquo;s plea deal before a federal judge did in late July. <\/p>\n<p>The president&rsquo;s security detail had already been accused of trying to cover for Hunter Biden&rsquo;s gun crimes three years ago when Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/03\/25\/report-secret-service-tried-to-clean-up-biden-family-mess-in-hunters-missing-gun-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> agents visited the gun store from which a firearm that was subsequently discarded was purchased. The agents allegedly &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/03\/25\/sources-secret-service-inserted-itself-into-case-of-hunter-bidens-gun-477879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked to take the paperwork involving the sale<\/a>.&rdquo; But the shopkeeper held onto Hunter Biden&rsquo;s Firearms Transaction Record because he was suspicious that &ldquo;Secret Service officers wanted to hide Hunter&rsquo;s ownership of the missing gun in case it were to be involved in a crime.&rdquo; Senate Republicans launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/06\/grassley-johnson-push-secret-service-on-involvement-with-hunter-biden-your-answers-just-raise-more-questions\/\">inquiry<\/a> into the agency&rsquo;s conduct shortly following the 2021 report in Politico.<\/p>\n<h2>House Republicans Investigate What They Were Already Investigating <\/h2>\n<p>Since Saturday, congressional Republicans have announced a cascade of new investigations into the Secret Service failures that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/secret-service-scandal-follows-years-of-failures\/\" title=\"Secret Service Scandal Follows Years of Failures\">jeopardized national stability months<\/a> before the fall election.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, led by Chairman James Comer of Kentucky, <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/release\/comer-oversight-committee-republicans-call-on-secret-service-to-provide-documents-and-communications-regarding-the-assassination-attempt-of-president-trump\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20Committee%20on%20Oversight%20and,campaign%20rally%20in%20Butler%2C%20Pennsylvania.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> documents from the Secret Service to be delivered to congressional investigators by Thursday. Green declined to be interviewed for this article.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced another investigation into the Secret Service.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The USSS must provide a complete and thorough accounting to the American people to assure them that the Secret Service is correcting its past problems and is fully and effectively carrying out its core mission: protection,&rdquo; Grassley wrote to the agency. <\/p>\n<p>Other lawmakers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/laurenboebert\/status\/1813246052981465312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lauren Boebert<\/a>, R-Colo., and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Jim_Banks\/status\/1813259233670144360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Banks<\/a>, R-Ind., have called on their colleagues to open up a Select Committee to investigate the failed assassination attempt. RealClearPolitics Reporter Susan Crabtree <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/gop-was-investigating-secret-service-before-trump-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> Tuesday however, that even before the slate of new congressional probes opened in the aftermath of Trump&rsquo;s near-fatal shooting, the House Oversight Committee had already been investigating the Secret Service &ldquo;for several months&rdquo; over yet another breach of security.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In late May, as RealClearPolitics first reported, Comer&rsquo;s committee had launched an investigation into a previous incident that took place in April involving a female Secret Service agent, tasked with protecting Vice President Kamala Harris, who was removed from her duties after suffering an apparent mental breakdown and attacking superior agents,&rdquo; Crabtree wrote. &ldquo;The incident took place just before Harris was set to depart Joint Base Andrews, the home base for Air Force One and Air Force Two, the call signs of the Boeing aircraft used by the president and vice president.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><em>This article has been updated since publication.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
