Although the manhunt was national in scope, Stockton police<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/illegal-immigrant-indicted-20-charges-allegedly-shooting-two-nypd-officers-point-blank-range\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> arrested<\/a> Cardona in Modesto, about 30 miles from where Gutierrez-Salazar and her children died.<\/p>\n<p>Cardona, who appeared in court on Monday, has been charged with three counts of premeditated murder, one count of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illegal-individual-accused-of-triple-murder-by-burning-victims-to-death-2\/\" title=\"Illegal individual accused of triple murder by burning victims to death\">child abuse\/endangerment<\/a> and one count of attempted murder, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/stockton-woman-2-children-murder-suspect-charges\/61603239#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KCRA-TV<\/a> in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>Although he was not the father of the children, he was in a relationship with Gutierrez-Salazar. One friend of hers described the relationship as abusive.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The last couple of months, she started to get bruises on her arms and we were worried,&rdquo; Jose Antonio Alvarez said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/stockton-trailer-fire-victim-friend-texts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I wanted to do something because of the messages she was sending me.
