We can&rsquo;t\u200c trust\u2062 them to protect us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13639613\/amp\/Secret-Service-director-wasnt-roof-gunman.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reacted<\/a> to Cheatle&rsquo;s comments and defended the Secret Service protecting Trump.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think the Secret \u200bService was able\u200d to react quickly once something happened, but we also know that\u2064 there\u2063 was a lot of buildup \u2064and intel that suggested that \u200dthere\u2062 could be a problem, \u2062and the fact that they didn&rsquo;t \u200bhave snipers on the \u2062roof just floors me,&rdquo; \u2062DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What that means\u2063 is that \u200cthey\u200b weren&rsquo;t fully prepared for something \u2062that they had every reason to anticipate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/15\/donald-trump-suggests-secret-service-director-who-allowed-assassination-attempt-on-him-to-resign\/\">urged<\/a>&nbsp;Cheatle to resign her post as Secret Service director. The former \u200bpresident argued that\u200b the agency failures\u200d had left him vulnerable to attack &#8211; bemoaning \u2063the incident\u2062 as\u2063 an &ldquo;attempted assassination,&rdquo; despite initial \u200creports from the Secret \u200bService to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said, Cheatle must &ldquo;immediately\u200d resign. This won&rsquo;t be the last time things like this happen if\u2064 she\u2063 is allowed to stay on as Director \u200cof the United \u200bStates Secret Service.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>However, Cheatle was the longest-serving director of the Secret Service before Saturday&rsquo;s shooting and has\u2064 held\u200c the chief spot \u2062since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>ABC had the explosive exchange with Cheatle as the \u2064exclusive lifter of the\u200b shooting aftermath\u2062 details after Cheatle confirmed not once\u2064 but twice \u200cthat there were no\u2062 snipers on the rooftop that the shooter targeted from.<\/p>\n<p>When \u2062she was\u2062 asked if federal officials considered instead of\u2063 sniper positions why not just have camera \u200dsurveillance monitoring the building \u200croof, Cheatle responded by saying, &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t something that was considered. return false;\" title=\"Printer Friendly, PDF &amp; Email\"><span id=\"printfriendly-text2\" class=\"pf-button-text\"><i class=\"mdi mdi-printer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<p>The Secret Service director said the security agency did not station snipers on top of the Pennsylvania roof from which a gunman shot former President Donald Trump last weekend because it was &ldquo;sloped.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service chief <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/secret-service-director-who-allowed-assassination-attempt-on-trump-says-she-wont-resign\/\">re<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/secret-service-director-who-allowed-assassination-attempt-on-trump-says-she-wont-resign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">f<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/secret-service-director-who-allowed-assassination-attempt-on-trump-says-she-wont-resign\/\">using<\/a> calls to step down after Trump was shot in the head, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13639613\/amp\/Secret-Service-director-wasnt-roof-gunman.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> ABC News that federal officials opted to forgo snipers on the rooftop that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-rally-shooting-secret-service-identified-rooftop-security-flaw-rcna161783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">identified<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/axios-co-founders-demand-trump-apologize-for-being-shot\/\" title=\"Axios Co-Founders Demand Trump Apologize For Being Shot\">security threat days<\/a> before the event.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a7f1bc8875924abc46d84976878524fd fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a7f1bc8875924abc46d84976878524fd\"><\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;That building in particular has a sloped roof at its highest point. And so, you know, there&rsquo;s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn&rsquo;t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;And so, you know, the decision was made to secure the building, from inside.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Three counter-snipers were <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/report-three-counter-snipers-were-in-building-trump-shooter-used-took-photos-of-him\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">positioned<\/a> in the building underneath the roof from which Saturday&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/secret-service-director-roof-too-steep-for-snipers\/\" title=\"Secret Service Director: Roof Too Steep for Snipers\">gunman fired multiple shots killing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/15\/late-trump-rallygoer-was-a-real-life-superhero-who-took-a-bullet-to-protect-his-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one<\/a> rallygoer and injuring three others, including Trump. But the Secret Service is ultimately responsible for the overall security plan, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/15\/secret-service-trump-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Washington Post, &ldquo;also has primary responsibility for addressing the risk of a long-range shooter and blocking lines of sight, including by instructing local police to secure or stand guard at buildings that could provide an opportunity for an attacker.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Service is responsible for everything, not just the inner perimeter,&rdquo; one former Secret Service agent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/16\/politics\/secret-service-trump-rally-blame\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> CNN. &ldquo;They should make sure all of this is covered.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c413a0712f786a39522ac7e1f1c6c0d3 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-c413a0712f786a39522ac7e1f1c6c0d3\"><\/div>\n<p>Trump made his <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/16\/watch-donald-trump-walks-out-at-rnc-in-first-public-appearance-since-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first<\/a> public appearance since the failed assassination attempt at the Republican National Convention (RNC) Monday night.
