Multiple media outlets, including CBS News, have identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the shooter.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The AR-style rifle Crooks used in the shooting was purchased &ldquo;legally&rdquo; by his father 11 years ago, authorities said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/PWQ13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a>. Authorities were able to trace and identify the gun &ldquo;using records from a gun dealership that is no longer operating,&rdquo; the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>The X post, viewed over four million times as of writing, claims Yearick opened fire on Trump&rsquo;s July 13 rally in Butler, PA. &ldquo;Now, it&rsquo;s being reported that Thomas Matthew Crooks is NOT the alleged shooter, and that it is a guy affiliated with ANTIFA that was actually arrested back in 2016 for being involved in an Anti-Trump protest in Pittsburgh,&rdquo; the post&rsquo;s caption begins.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;His name is Maxwell Yearick. He was sentenced to a 3-12 month jail sentence in Allegheny County Jail. I don&rsquo;t know WHO is the true shooter at this point, and it seems like we are being intentionally confused about it,&rdquo; it continues. The post also includes photos of Yearick.<\/p>\n<p>The claim is false, however. Yearick&rsquo;s name has not been referenced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=183dc6637f0766c0&amp;sca_upv=1&amp;q=trump+rally+shooting&amp;tbm=nws&amp;source=lnms&amp;fbs=AEQNm0DfIOrc-JVK7JSIXTRypzh1d0Xgc-Qx-MWluXtsBh8oLpCKQRAUtWzHFihGqkJSvd6waXyF5whWdwEQZiih1j2aObkDezYQl1--J7dnBfQxdz6Nha0WDLUsOF0AtSiUSYBwWKjUfDVT2swOltlOXSeLAPUm-g5m5GfBfoRyYVVzm_b3Su6WZJKLfdbY5-9pIoOOA-hbQ2usr0uArLhOx3hFqrto8Q&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiR89Pl5qmHAxXOMVkFHdYFDfsQ0pQJegQIDxAB&amp;biw=1680&amp;bih=870&amp;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">any credible news reports<\/a> about the shooting that took place at Trump&rsquo;s recent campaign rally. In fact, the opposite is true. On July 15, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/fact-check\/convicted-anti-trump-protester-falsely-identified-shooter-2024-07-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a> reported the claim was false. In addition, the FBI neither repeated the claim about Yearick via statements about the shooting issued on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/update-on-the-fbi-investigation-of-the-attempted-assassination-of-former-president-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> nor its <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FBI\/status\/1812472240086155684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">verified X account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=183dc6637f0766c0&amp;sca_upv=1&amp;q=identity+of+trump+rally+shooter&amp;tbm=nws&amp;source=univ&amp;tbo=u&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjKo5fx5KmHAxWdF1kFHfmRDFAQt8YBKAF6BAgREAQ&amp;biw=1680&amp;bih=870&amp;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multiple media outlets<\/a>, including CBS News have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-rally-gunman-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identified<\/a> the shooter as Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, PA.<\/p>\n<p>Although Yearick was not involved in the shooting, he was sentenced to jail time for clashing with police during an anti-Trump protest in 2016, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtae.com\/article\/pittsburgh-donald-trump-protesters-sentenced-to-jail-time\/9261199#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WTAE<\/a>. Besides the three- to 12-month sentence, Yearick was also sentenced to one year of probation and 100 hours of community service, the outlet reported.
