That compilation set the stage for Netanyahu to accuse the attorney general of tolerating threats of violence from protesters against his management of the ceasefire-and-hostage-release negotiations as widespread anxiety and anger over the fate of the hostages seized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hamas\" title=\"Hamas\">Hamas<\/a> fuels a political uproar that can feed even on a failed attack on an American presidential candidate in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the issue of the hostages that are really bringing things to a boiling point in Israel,\u201d Foundation for Defense of Democracy Senior Director Enia Krivine, an Israel-based analyst, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThis issue being so raw and so visceral within Israel \u2026 [Netanyahu] is kind of being [perceived] as the guy that is intentionally causing these deals to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s relationship with the attorney general is marred further by a series of disputes connected to an attempt by Netanyahu\u2019s allies to alter the balance of power between the Israeli Supreme Court and the legislature, as well as a long-running corruption inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNetanyahu and his supporters, feel that the left has been inciting against them, precisely as Trump and Trump supporters feel that the left here has been inciting against him,\u201d Hudson Institute senior fellow Michael Doran told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cIf you\u2019re a Netanyahu supporter, then you [also] believe that the judicial establishment, in all respects, has been weaponized against Netanyahu\u2026And so, the parallel with Trump also is perfect there [with respect to] the sense among Trump and his supporters is that the judicial system has been weaponized against Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pauses during a press conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, Saturday, July 13, 2024. We are seeing the writing on the wall. We are seeing the writing in the squares. We are seeing the writing on social media. We all see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those complaints cut little ice with his political rivals, who accused Netanyahu of exploiting the attack on Trump for a self-serving stunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI \u2026 condemn any incitement, but here is a sentence that is not incitement: Netanyahu is a whiny, bad, and failed prime minister, who is only concerned with himself and his personal affairs, and he should go home,\u201d Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/absolutely-fake-news-on-cnn-giorgia-melonis-political-rival-shuts-down-fascism-fears\/\" title=\"\u2018Absolutely Fake News\u2019: On CNN, Giorgia Meloni\u2019s Political \u2018Rival\u2019 Shuts Down \u2018Fascism\u2019 Fears\">center-left politician<\/a> who orchestrated the coalition government that interrupted Netanyahu\u2019s tenure as prime minister from 2021-2022, said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The contretemps resonates through layers of contemporary and historical disputes, analysts say. Israeli society is haunted by the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin, the Labor Party politician who agreed to the 1993 Oslo Accords with the Palestine Liberation Organization, by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/yigal-amir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>hard-right opponent<\/a> of the deal. The murder took place just weeks after activists attacked Rabin\u2019s car \u2014 an anecdote that has returned to the surface of contemporary controversies given that a young Itamar Ben Gvir, now the controversial Israeli national security minister \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/i-made-mistakes-ben-gvir-tells-high-court-hes-refined-since-entering-politics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>boasted<\/a> at the time that \u201cwe can get to Rabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of sort of calls to violence thrown around by the left and by the right,\u201d Krivine said. \u201cIt\u2019s not [as if] either side in this country has monopoly on that. \u2026 What\u2019s particularly painful right now is the hostage families and the fact that these negotiations have become political. So these families are blaming Netanyahu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That controversy has festered throughout months of negotiations with Hamas, although U.S. officials have faulted the terrorist group for refusing to accept Israeli offers. And yet, Netanyahu also reportedly has shifted his position in the latest talks \u2014 in an attempt \u201cto use Hamas\u2019 weakness to get as much as he can out of the negotiations,\u201d an Israeli official\u00a0told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/11\/netanyahu-gaza-ceasefire-hostage-negotiations\">Axios<\/a> <\/em>\u2014 and a rift appears to be widening between Netanyahu and other security leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow it is [possible], so I\u2019m telling you: It\u2019s closer than it has ever been. There is complete unanimity in the defense establishment \u2014 the IDF, the Shin Bet, and the Mossad \u2014 that there is no insurmountable security obstacle to the deal from their point of view,\u201d Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/liveblog_entry\/tv-report-gallant-tells-hostage-families-to-meet-urgently-with-pm-since-deal-can-and-should-be-done\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reportedly\">reportedly<\/a> told relatives of hostages. \u201cIt is critical to move ahead with decisions in the near future. It\u2019s important to finalize the processes in the coming days, before the prime minister\u2019s trip to Washington or in the course of his visit.
