Dmitri Mehlhorn, an advisor to Hoffman,\u200d hinted that Saturday&#8217;s events were orchestrated for clout, comparing it to \u200da \u200c&#8221;classic \u2064Putin play.&#8221; \u200cHoffman has\u2064 also been accused of promoting violence against \u200dTrump and \u200cfunding election disinformation\u200c and anti-Trump \u200clawfare. Jean Carroll&#8217;s lawsuit against Trump. The advisor&#8217;s \u2062comments have sparked controversy and criticism, highlighting the ongoing\u2064 political tensions\u200d in the US.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An adviser to prominent Democrat donor Reid Hoffman reportedly emailed journalists on Saturday night suggesting that former President Donald Trump might have staged his own <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/13\/trump-wounded-after-gunshots-ring-out-at-pa-rally-defiantly-pumps-fist-after-apparent-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assassination attempt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dmitri Mehlhorn, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/07\/14\/2024\/top-democrat-pushed-reporters-to-consider-staged-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emails<\/a> obtained by Semafor, suggested Saturday\u2019s events were \u201cencouraged and maybe even staged\u201d for clout, adding \u201cthis is a classic Putin play and given the facts seems more plausible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mehlhorn is an advisor to Hoffman, the leftist LinkedIn founder who \u2014 in addition to bankrolling Democrat campaigns \u2014 has funded election disinformation and anti-Trump lawfare.<\/p>\n<p>Mehlhorn sent an email \u201cthat appeared to be addressed to sympathetic journalists\u201d the evening of the assassination attempt, according to Semafor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/07\/14\/2024\/top-democrat-pushed-reporters-to-consider-staged-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claiming<\/a> Trump may have staged the shooting which wounded the former president and killed one attendee. <\/p>\n<p>He briefly acknowledged the possibility that \u201csome crazy anti-Trumper\u201d committed the violence before suggesting Trump had orchestrated it himself, comparing the former president to Russians and Hamas. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other possibility \u2013 which feels horrific and alien and absurd in America, but is quite common globally \u2013 is that this \u2018shooting\u2019 was encouraged and maybe even staged so Trump could get photos and benefit from the backlash,\u201d Mehlhorn <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mualphaxi\/status\/1812579998735491327\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a>. \u201cThis is a classic Russian tactic, such as when Putin killed 300 civilians in 1999 and blamed it on terrorists to ride the backlash to winning power. Others who have embraced this tactic of committing raw evil and then benefitting from the backlash include Hamas on October 7.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Hypocrisy<\/h2>\n<p>Hoffman, Mehlhorn\u2019s advisee, seemingly promoted <a href=\"https:\/\/puck.news\/peter-thiel-reid-hoffman-face-off-in-sun-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">violence<\/a> against Trump in an exchange last Wednesday with PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel during the Allen &#038; Company Conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, Puck reported. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Thiel <a href=\"https:\/\/puck.news\/peter-thiel-reid-hoffman-face-off-in-sun-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thanked<\/a> Hoffman \u201csarcastically\u201d for backing anti-Trump lawfare, as it helped his campaign by \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/reidhoffman\/status\/1812528484851531780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turning a clown into a martyr<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I wish I had made him an actual martyr,\u201d Hoffman replied. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hoffman tried to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/reidhoffman\/status\/1812528484851531780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explain<\/a> this on X yesterday, saying his remarks expressed hope Trump would \u201clet himself be held accountable\u201d for his \u201cassaults on and lies about women,\u201d referring to the E. Jean Carroll <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/09\/e-jean-carrolls-original-claims-about-trump-were-absurd-but-that-didnt-stop-the-media-from-amplifying-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> which Hoffman helped <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/09\/dem-donor-who-funded-election-disinfo-lawfare-is-backing-lawsuit-to-silence-election-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fund<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I meant nothing about any sort of physical harm or violence, which I categorically deplore. I meant and mean accountability to the rule of law,\u201d Hoffman wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Hoffman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/reidhoffman\/status\/1812528484851531780\">criticized<\/a> Trump for not denouncing \u201cpolitical violence\u201d enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should clearly indicate, which he never has, that political violence is evil and unacceptable \u2013 even if the perpetrators are trying to do it to benefit him,\u201d Hoffman posted to X. \u201cInstead of calling the January 6 insurrectionists \u2018heroes\u2019 whom he intends to pardon and even hire into government, he should speak out against political violence. When he warns against consequences of him losing the election, he should not predict a \u2018bloodbath\u2019 in a way that might incite future protesters to violence against his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ted-cruz-manages-to-trigger-leftists-by-doing-something-millions-of-americans-do-every-year\/\" title=\"Ted Cruz Manages To Trigger Leftists by Doing Something Millions of Americans Do Every Year\">political opponents<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman concluded with the obligatory <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/reidhoffman\/status\/1812528484851531780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remarks<\/a> that he is \u201chorrified and saddened by what happened\u201d to Trump, and he\u2019d like to \u201cwish him a speedy recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Funding Election Disinformation, Lawfare<\/h2>\n<p>Hoffman <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/09\/dem-donor-who-funded-election-disinfo-lawfare-is-backing-lawsuit-to-silence-election-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded<\/a> a false information campaign that used \u201cRussian tactics\u201d against Republican Roy Moore, an Alabama candidate for U.S. Senate, according to the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman and Mehlhorn created investment fund \u201cInvesting in US\u201d after the 2016 election to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/for-profit\/investing-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bankroll<\/a> left-wing groups including American Engagement Technologies (AET), which, beginning in 2017, received a total of $750,000. <\/p>\n<p>AET helped run the $100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/19\/us\/alabama-senate-roy-jones-russia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scheme<\/a> that used Russian-style tactics to reduce Moore\u2019s support, according to The New York Times. Operatives created a Facebook page, seemingly run by Alabamians, to split the Republican vote. Moore lost narrowly to Democrat Doug Jones, and Hoffman has since <a href=\"https:\/\/reid.medium.com\/truth-and-politics-1a532bc6c2b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apologized<\/a> for his role in the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman also helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/13\/nyregion\/trump-carroll-lawsuit-hoffman-linkedin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fund<\/a> E. Jean Carroll\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/e-jean-carroll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> against Trump, according to court documents cited by The New York Times. Carroll accused Trump of raping her and sued him for defamation when he denied it. Carroll declined to press criminal charges against Trump because of the strange <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/09\/e-jean-carrolls-original-claims-about-trump-were-absurd-but-that-didnt-stop-the-media-from-amplifying-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claim<\/a> that she \u201cwould find it disrespectful to the women who are down on the border who are being raped around the clock.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Hoffman-backed nonprofit American Future Republic provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/anafaguy\/2023\/05\/10\/what-was-reid-hoffmans-role-in-funding-e-jean-carrolls-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funding<\/a> for the lawsuit, according to Forbes. Carroll won $2 million for the alleged assault and $3 million for the alleged defamation in a civil trial.<\/p>\n<p>Hoffman recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/09\/dem-donor-who-funded-election-disinfo-lawfare-is-backing-lawsuit-to-silence-election-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> he is investing millions of dollars in tabulator company Smartmatic to support the company\u2019s lawsuit against Fox News and Newsmax for their coverage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/az-judge-sides-with-senate-gop-over-audit-of-millions-of-ballots-election-equipment\/\" title=\"AZ: Judge Sides With Senate GOP Over Audit Of Millions Of Ballots, Election Equipment\">election integrity concerns<\/a> in 2020.
