target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Nikki Haley<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3075261\/haley-releases-delegates-for-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>released<\/a> her 97 delegates ahead of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican-national-convention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> Republican National Convention<\/a>, her supporters still have doubts on backing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"former President Trump\">former President Donald Trump<\/a> this November.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Haley and Trump were engaged in what became a bitter and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2849402\/haley-sticks-up-for-husband-after-trump-attacks-him-for-absence-on-campaign-trail\/\">personal <\/a>primary feud. Initially, when the former South Carolina governor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2905324\/watch-live-nikki-haley-announces-she-is-dropping-out-of-gop-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> dropped out of the race<\/a> in March, she declined to put her support behind Trump as many of her rivals had done. <\/p>\n<p>At that time, she called on Trump to give her supporters a reason to come back into the fold. While Haley has since said she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3013931\/nikki-haley-vote-donald-trump-biden-catastrophe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>will vote <\/a>for Trump, some of her voters aren\u2019t so sure they\u2019re ready to do the same. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump has said he doesn\u2019t need Nikki\u2019s supporters to win in the past, and I don\u2019t believe that\u2019s true,\u201d said Tom Woody, an Iowa Republican who caucused for Haley in January. \u201cI know I am not alone in looking for an alternative to what we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woody, who considers himself a conservative, said Trump has not won over his vote and he finds himself in a difficult spot ahead of the November election. An apparent attempt to assassinate Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday is sure to animate the base of voters who already support the former president, but it is unclear whether it will move independents and skeptical Republicans into his corner. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of people out there, like me, that don\u2019t see Trump as a true conservative or Republican,\u201d Woody explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a tough position that we find ourselves in, I don\u2019t think that I \u2013 I might abstain from voting and that\u2019s something that I also don\u2019t believe in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woody isn\u2019t alone. Alissa Baker, who was a volunteer on Haley\u2019s Virginia leadership team,\u00a0also admits she has no idea what she\u2019ll do in November, especially since her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nolte-poll-shows-desantis-soundly-beating-all-democrat-challengers\/\" title=\"Nolte: Poll Shows DeSantis Soundly Beating All Democrat Challengers\">state appears<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog-posts\/republicans-virginia-ripe-red-takeover-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>to be more competitive <\/a>this cycle. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginally, I was kind of comfortable that Virginia wasn\u2019t really in play, but now it is,\u201d Baker said. \u201cWhere my head is at is I would still think that Donald Trump does need to reach out to Haley\u2019s voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still waiting,\u201d Baker said of Trump\u2019s outreach. \u201cYou know maybe next week we\u2019ll get that answer [at the Republican National Convention].<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">FILE \u2013 Former U.N. (AP Photo\/Cliff Owen, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A spokeswoman for Haley<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog-posts\/haley-releases-delegates-trump-republican-convention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> confirmed<\/a> earlier in the week that the former South Carolina governor would not be attending the RNC in Milwaukee. According to new reporting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/top-stories\/latest\/republican-national-convention-2024-speakers-rcna161721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"NBC News \">NBC News<\/a>, Haley has been invited to speak at the convention, although details have yet to be finalized. Haley\u2019s camp did not immediately return <em>The Washington Examiner\u2019s <\/em>request for comment, and it\u2019s still unclear whether she will ultimately speak or not. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was not invited, and she\u2019s fine with that,\u201d Chaney Denton told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> on Tuesday of this week. \u201cTrump deserves the convention he wants.\u00a0 She\u2019s made it clear she\u2019s voting for him and wishes him the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voters who supported Haley like Baker want Haley to be at the convention next week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were sending a message, not just of support for Nikki, but also a message to the Republican Party, to say that we were looking at going in another direction, so if you want us to come back into the fold here, the voice needs to be represented,\u201d Baker explained. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think that having her there would be an important show of understanding that these voices are being heard and I think it would be helpful to the overall idea of unity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is GOP a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-republicans-call-for-unity-after-closed-door-caucus-vote-to-keep-rep-cheney-as-conference-chair\/\" title=\"House Republicans call for unity after closed door caucus vote to keep Rep. Cheney as conference chair\">big tent<\/a>\u2019 party? <\/h2>\n<p>A number of GOP senators also agree that Haley should be included in the convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we need a big tent, I think we need to be appealing to all those people,\u201d said Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS). \u201cI would support Nikki Haley and others being there at the convention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), who has openly feuded with Trump and voted to convict him on the impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection in 2021, has said she won\u2019t be attending the convention and plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3080625\/susan-collins-protest-vote-nikki-haley-trump\/\" title=\"write in Haley\u2019s name\">write in Haley\u2019s name<\/a> on election day. <\/p>\n<p>Collins, speaking to the <em>Washington Examiner, <\/em>said the Trump camp should be making a better effort to reach out to Haley\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe released her delegates to vote for them. I think very highly of her and hope there is a lot more outreach to her \u2013 I\u2019d like to see her speak at the convention,\u201d Collins said.<\/p>\n<p>Haley earned tens of thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/failed-american-idol-taking-second-shot-at-politics\/\" title=\"Failed American Idol Taking Second Shot at Politics\">primary votes<\/a> this cycle, underscoring a discontent among a faction of Republicans with Trump. Even after she ended her 2024 bid, 22% of voters in Indiana\u2019s open GOP primary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2995765\/nikki-haley-supporters-trump-indiana-primary\/\">chose Haley<\/a>. Even in April, 155,000 Pennsylvania Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/2977192\/haley-protest-vote-biden-outreach-swing-state-pennsylvania\/\">voted for her <\/a>over the former president. (AP Photo\/Abbie Parr, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Doug Heye, a longtime Republican strategist and a former communications director of the RNC, said Trump\u2019s personal attacks against Haley toward the end of the primary season could have negative repercussions for his own campaign. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept kicking her and [her supporters] and giving them reasons to, you know, maybe less of them go over to him or they go over more slowly,\u201d Heye explained. \u201cThat really impacts things as you\u2019re doing voter targeting and data and so forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heye admits a good portion of Haley\u2019s voters are likely to stick with Trump, especially in the aftermath of Biden\u2019s poor debate performance, even though the Biden campaign has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/11\/biden-nikki-haley-voters-presidential-debate\">attempted to reach out<\/a> to them, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the challenge that Biden faces right now, with everything we\u2019ve seen in the last two weeks is it makes it harder to win those people over, who he could have won a sizable portion of. I think getting 15 to 20 percent of the Republican vote is very sizeable \u2013 but he can\u2019t get over those very legitimate questions of whether or not he can serve for another four years,\u201d Heye said. \u201cThat was part of Nikki Haley\u2019s campaign right? She wasn\u2019t campaigning against Joe Biden really at all. It was against Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republican National Committee said \u201cRepublicans, Independents and disillusioned Democrats\u201d are supporting Trump, but made no mention of Haley\u2019s supporters directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Joe Biden\u2019s own campaign is debating replacing him as the nominee and prominent Democrats are calling on him to step down, President Trump just passed his 2024 Platform with overwhelming support,\u201d Anna Kelly, an RNC spokeswoman said in a statement provided to the <em>Washington Examiner. <\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Voting to get Haley back in government <\/h2>\n<p>Matthew Tsien, who created a pro-Haley Facebook group which boasts 8,000 members, believes 70% of the members of the group will ultimately vote for Trump, but many won\u2019t admit it publicly. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing it quietly \u2013 we are not proud of who we are going to vote for,\u201d Tsien said, who lives in Fort Lauderdale. \u201cTrump says a lot of reckless things. I can\u2019t say specifically he ever reached out to us, but I think the reason why so many Nikki Haley Republicans have returned to the party is they\u2019re voting for the party\u2019s principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tsien, who has changed his Facebook group name to say \u201cNikki Haley for President 2028,\u201d said part of the reason he\u2019s voting for Trump is because it\u2019s the only way to potentially get Haley back into government and into a cabinet position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re picking our best choice, it\u2019s the most optimistic one \u2013 We want her in government because she\u2019s going to be very influential on the world stage if Trump uses her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Krista Moore, a member of the same Haley Facebook group from North Carolina, said she voted for Trump in the last couple of elections, but won\u2019t do it this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy conscience won\u2019t let me do it \u2013 I don\u2019t like him as a man. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s the role model that I want for my grandchildren. I don\u2019t think a convicted felon should be president of the United States,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n<p>Moore, who was a life-long Republican, recently changed her voter registration to Independent, emphasizing there\u2019s no place for her in the party anymore. Moore recalled an incident at the North Carolina State Fair last October when she was volunteering at a GOP booth and was asked to remove her Nikki Haley for President pin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI show up, and it\u2019s a Trump booth, and this is in October, and looked around and they were selling Trump paraphernalia. So I put my Nicki pin on, and I was told that I had to take it off,\u201d Moore said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t take it off, but more than a handful of people that were a part of the local GOP were telling me that I needed to, and at the end of the day, it left a bad taste in my mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore said she\u2019s unsure who she will vote for, but it won\u2019t be Biden or Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to do, am I going to go in and write in Nikki\u2019s name? That would be kind of silly. But it also would be to not show up at the polls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould he earn my vote \u2013 so to speak? I\u2019d be shocked if he did.
