President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Joe Biden<\/a> at the top of the ticket, but that\u2019s not necessarily bad news for the Californian. <\/p>\n<p>Political strategists and Democratic Californians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-07-12\/as-kamala-harris-rises-gavin-newsoms-short-term-presidential-prospects-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>say<\/a> waiting to mount his presidential bid until the 2028 election cycle could buy Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/un-canceled-sf-school-board-formally-rescinds-move-to-rename-schools-after-lincoln-washington-feinstein\/\" title=\"Un-Canceled: SF If Democrats do end up replacing the top of their ticket, Biden\u2019s replacement will be racing against the clock to pull off a challenging, last-minute victory against former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump?source=%2Fdue-process-is-crucial-to-justice-both-for-accusers-and-the-accused\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Both Newsom and Harris are widely viewed as replacements for Biden should he end his presidential campaign. However, with polling showing Harris performing better than Newsom in a race against Trump, the California governor may have escaped an election-year nightmare. <\/p>\n<p>Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3078801\/newsom-vows-not-to-challenge-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>vowed not to challenge<\/a> Harris for the nomination earlier this week while pledging to continue his support for Biden. The Democratic president\u2019s grasp on his reelection ambitions remains tight, also Biden\u2019s latest comments allowed for a caveat. Thursday evening, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog\/2024-elections-live-updates-biden-trump-house-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told the press<\/a> he wouldn\u2019t step down unless his team tells him, \u201cThere\u2019s no way you can win.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>His words come as a variety of polling shows him consistently losing to Trump in November. Should the president have a change of heart and step down from his campaign bid, the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/saradorn\/2024\/07\/09\/heres-how-kamala-harris-performs-in-polls-against-trump-as-she-emerges-as-most-likely-biden-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>polls<\/a> continue to show Harris outperforming Newsom, making her the most likely Biden replacement. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vice President Kamala Harris stands on stage with California Gov. (AP Photo\/Carolyn Kaster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A California Democratic activist says her governor has made peace with the setback to his presidential ambitions. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the time to make that power move, and I think Gavin Newsom understands that,\u201d Aimee Allison, founder and president of She the People, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2024-07-12\/as-kamala-harris-rises-gavin-newsoms-short-term-presidential-prospects-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>While she generally supports Newsom, Allison believes Harris is the woman for the moment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sense was, and still is, that a generational transition right now with Kamala Harris heading it is logical, and it\u2019s also the closest thing the Democrats have to winning strategy this late in the cycle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Thad Kousser, a professor of political science at UC San Diego, agrees it is in Newsom\u2019s best interests to forgo competing for the Democratic nomination this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2024-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>election cycle<\/a>. The professor told the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> ceding the nomination battle was a politically savvy decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took a reality and made it a virtue,\u201d Kousser said of Newsom. \u201cCertainly, he gave up a short-term possibility of coming into this role and leading the Democrats to victory in 2024.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a silver lining, Kousser says.
