Hawley has \u200dadvocated for \u200bChristian nationalism at a conference, sparking\u2064 controversy. After the false claim went viral, Hawley confirmed that he is not\u2062 Catholic and is in fact \u2064a\u2062 member of an evangelical Presbyterian church. The \u200dDaily Beast issued a \u200bcorrection \u2064and removed the false claim. The article also mentions Leo and Roberts being \u200bmembers of Opus\u2063 Dei, a\u2062 Catholic\u2063 organization focused \u2064on spreading the Christian message and sanctifying honest work. Josh Hawley is Catholic.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Verdict: False<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hawley is a Protestant, according to multiple sources. The Daily Beast issued a correction.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hawley advocated for Christian nationalism at the National Conservatism Conference, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/josh-hawley-doubles-down-christian-nationalism-remarks-1923103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newsweek<\/a>. After his remarks went viral, he doubled down on them, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/joe-biden-knows-he-messed-up-on-fracking-at-debate-and-is-now-doing-damage-control-the-daily-wire\/\" title=\"Joe Biden Knows He Messed Up On Fracking At Debate And Is Now Doing Damage Control | The Daily Wire\">outlet reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Beast reported that Hawley is an \u201cardent Bible-thumping Catholic\u201d who \u201creiterated his Christian Nationalist bona fides for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mike-pence-met-with-boos-calls-of-traitor-at-faith-freedom-conference\/\" title=\"Mike Pence Met With Boos, Calls Of \u2018Traitor\u2019 At Faith &amp; Freedom Conference\">conservative conference<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The claim that Hawley is a Catholic is false. The New Republic <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/154526\/josh-hawley-real\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identified<\/a> him as a \u201cdevout evangelical Presbyterian\u201d in a 2019 article. A 2018 St. Louis Post-Dispatch article <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/EF2nG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that he was attending a Presbyterian church while he was running for Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Hawley\u2019s office confirmed to Check Your Fact that Hawley is not Catholic. The editor\u2019s note reads, \u201cEditor\u2019s Note: This article previously referred to Josh Hawley as a Catholic. He is a member of an evangelical Presbyterian church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article also claimed Leo and Roberts were members of Opus Dei, a Catholic organization established to \u201cmission is to spread the Christian message that every person is called to holiness and that every honest work can be sanctified,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/opusdei.org\/en-us\/faq\/opus-dei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. Opus Dei is also a \u201cpersonal prelature of the Catholic Church\u201d that is \u201cworldwide in scope, consisting of a prelate, his clergy, and lay faithful (men and women).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also states that Leo was president of the conservative Federalist Society. <a href=\"https:\/\/fedsoc.org\/contributors\/leonard-leo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leo<\/a> was vice president and currently serves as co-chairman of the organization. <a href=\"https:\/\/fedsoc.org\/staff\/eugene-meyer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eugene Meyer<\/a> is the first and current president of the Federalist Society.<\/p>\n<p>Leo accepted an award from the Catholic Information Center (CIC) in 2022, which is affiliated with Opus Dei, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/news\/leonard-leo-architect-conservative-supreme-court-takes-wider-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Catholic Reporter.<\/a> Leo also sits on the board of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cicdc.org\/faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIC<\/a>. Democracy Labs <a href=\"https:\/\/embed.kumu.io\/0a4a0c4c937b75e5bd41368165eaba7a#untitled-map\/kevin-roberts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a> that Roberts \u201chas not shied away from speaking at Opus Dei\u2019s CIC public events, and in partnership with The Napa Institute, linked to Opus Dei.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democracy Labs is a \u201cproject of the Tide Advocacy Fund,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/thedemlabs.org\/who-we-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. The Tides Advocacy Fund is a \u201cleft-of-center advocacy organization\u201d that is \u201cthe sole 501(c)(4) social welfare organization in the Tides Nexus and focuses on the creation, financing, and consultation of various left-of-center organizations,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/advocacy-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Influence Watch<\/a>, which is run by the conservative Capital Research Center.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Finnerty, the communications director for Opus Dei, said that \u201c[o]ut of respect for the individuals\u2019 privacy, I am not going to discuss personal information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo check whether or not these individuals are members of Opus Dei, I would suggest that you reach out to them directly,\u201d Finnerty told Check Your Fact in an email.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Beast removed all references to Leo after Check Your Fact reached out.
