Little did she know that the remains of her unborn baby would become the subject of a laboratory experiment at a nearby university.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After her abortion \u2014 which she now deeply regrets \u2014 Atkins<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16248\"><span>filed suit<\/span><\/a> <span>against the leadership of Southwestern Women\u2019s Options. The suit alleges that Dr. Curtis Boyd, a volunteer faculty member at the University of New Mexico, failed to inform Atkins of \u201chow the unborn infant body parts were going to be used.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Atkins\u2019 situation is far from unique \u2014 both at Southwestern Women\u2019s Options and across the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dozens of American universities have channels through which they obtain the bodies of aborted babies for medical experiments. Indeed, there exists a multimillion-dollar marketplace among America\u2019s leading universities and America\u2019s leading abortion providers \u2014 a marketplace largely subsidized by taxpayer dollars. In addition to finding customers within the faculty, abortion providers thrive upon their customers in the student body \u2014 namely, those who obtain abortions at clinics intentionally located near college campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The abortion-academia industrial complex is a vibrant institution within the United States \u2014 one with with no signs of slowing down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Baby parts trafficked by abortionists<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Researchers and abortion providers have constructed a lucrative ecosystem around the purchase and sale of fetal remains \u2014 an operation founded upon delivery processes whose efficiency rivals that of America\u2019s most innovative e-commerce firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Five years ago \u2014 after investigative journalist David Daleiden<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/lifelegaldefensefoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Select_Investigative_Panel_Final_Report.pdf\"><span>unveiled<\/span><\/a> <span>that abortion providers routinely buy and sell the remains of unborn children \u2014 the United States House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee commissioned a Select Investigative Panel to uncover the intricacies of the fetal tissue industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The panel\u2019s 471-page<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/lifelegaldefensefoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Select_Investigative_Panel_Final_Report.pdf\"><span>report<\/span><\/a> <span>detailed four predominant tissue sourcing models \u2014 including the \u201cUniversity\/Clinic Model,\u201d in which a particular university forms \u201ca close relationship with a nearby abortion clinic and regularly acquires tissue from that clinic for research purposes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following their investigation, the panel identified numerous institutions \u2014 especially public universities supported by state and federal funding \u2014 that \u201cformed a close relationship with one or more abortion clinics.\u201d The report explained that these institutions \u201cregularly acquire tissue from those clinics for research purposes and in some cases disseminate fetal tissue to other research institutions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After naming a specific body part and a preferable gestational age, clinics may even tell \u201cthe research institution when they have abortions scheduled that may produce the desired fetal body parts.\u201d The abortion facility therefore \u201clearns which human fetal organs and tissue are useful to the research institution and often alerts the research institution to their availability without prior solicitation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In one recent example of such a partnership between a university and a clinic, immunology researchers at the University of Pittsburgh<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16610\"><span>obtained<\/span><\/a> <span>second-trimester aborted babies from nearby Magee Women\u2019s Hospital for an experiment that involved grafting the babies\u2019 scalps to mice and rats. The researchers called the final product \u201chumanized rodents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In another recent study, UC San Francisco researchers<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-69067-y\"><span>recruited<\/span><\/a> <span>249 women scheduled for second-trimester abortions to determine \u201cracial\/ethnic differences\u201d in exposure to flame retardants. Medical professionals at San Francisco General Hospital Women\u2019s Option Center sourced the unborn children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to the \u201cUniversity\/Clinic Model,\u201d the \u201cMiddleman Model\u201d involves a procurer obtaining body parts \u201cdirectly from a source such as an abortion clinic or hospital\u201d and then transferring the tissue to a customer, \u201cusually a university researcher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A company called StemExpress \u2014 which rocketed from $156,000 in revenue to $4.5 million between 2010 and 2014 \u2014 sold fetal tissue \u201con demand\u201d through an online procurement application. StemExpress marketed to Planned Parenthood clinics and had advance knowledge of abortions scheduled at certain facilities. Advanced Bioscience Resources \u2014 a nonprofit corporate foundation \u2014 offered remains to researchers through employees \u201cembedded\u201d in abortion clinics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The University of Minnesota told the congressional panel that \u201capproximately 10 researchers\u201d used tissue from StemExpress and Advanced Bioscience Resources \u201ccurrently or in the recent past.\u201d Invoices showed charges \u201cranging from $275 to $2,675,\u201d which reflected a \u201cvarying fee schedule for different types of fetal tissue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The panel also discovered that cutting corners in regulatory compliance is a recurrent practice within the tissue procurement industry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Referring to Nichole Atkins\u2019 case and others, the panel concluded that \u201cthe relationships that have formed between tissue procurement companies, abortion clinics, and universities are fraught with questionable practices, including the possible use of illegal, late-term abortion practices to procure fetal tissues and organs, violations of federal laws and regulations on patient consent, and systematic violations of patients\u2019 HIPAA rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Taxpayer dollars used to grease the gears<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The House Energy and Commerce Committee\u2019s report is rife with instances of academics receiving federal grants for fetal tissue experimentation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Indeed, the report shows that the National Institutes of Health awarded 329 grants for research involving the remains of unborn babies between 2010 and 2014. As more recent<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/report.nih.gov\/funding\/categorical-spending#\/\"><span>data<\/span><\/a> <span>from the agency reveal, federal dollars allocated to human fetal tissue projects ballooned from $40 million in 2008 to an estimated $107 million in 2021 \u2014 a 168% increase.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2019, President Trump enacted a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/06\/05\/729983644\/trump-administration-bars-federal-research-involving-human-fetal-tissue\"><span>measure<\/span><\/a> <span>stopping the use of fetal human tissue within the NIH. However, the ban did not affect research conducted by universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Daily Wire also obtained a copy of White Coat Waste\u2019s February 2021 analysis of the fetal tissue industry. The analysis \u2014 which dubbed universities \u201cground zero\u201d for human fetal tissue research \u2014 found that 89% of NIH-funded research on unborn babies also incorporated animal testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Among several examples, the congressional report states that Colorado State University received $3.5 million from the NIH between 2010 and 2015 \u201cto support projects using fetal tissue.\u201d Likewise, UC San Francisco \u2014 the same institution that carried out the flame retardant experiment \u2014 received $17.5 million from the NIH for fetal tissue research initiatives. The flame retardant experiment in particular was funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The congressional panel quickly discovered that universities are zealous to retain their federal grants for human tissue research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the course of their investigation, the panel received \u201cletters from 21 institutions that claim to provide evidence for the value of human fetal tissue research.\u201d However, after evaluating the impact of fetal tissue research on vaccine development and the treatment of disease, the panel concluded that \u201cnot a single responding institution provided substantive evidence for the value of fetal tissue research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students encouraged to embrace abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Beyond its direct involvement in the fetal tissue industry, Planned Parenthood \u2014 which carried out a record-breaking 354,871 abortion<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/5-disturbing-insights-from-planned-parenthoods-annual-report\"><span>procedures<\/span><\/a> <span>in the past year \u2014 maintains close relationships with American universities and aggressively seeks to normalize abortion among college students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon lists on its<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-southwestern-oregon\/local-training-education\/programs-college-and-university-settings\"><span>website<\/span><\/a> <span>that it \u201cprovides a variety of programs for college and university settings,\u201d and \u201cpartnered with several departments, clubs, and student groups\u201d in the region.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For example, Portland State University\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/act.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/groups\/generation-action-portland-state-university\"><span>Generation Action<\/span><\/a> <span>club encourages students to \u201cfollow the reproductive justice framework, as allies, elevating marginalized voices on our campus.\u201d Specifically, they \u201cmobilize advocates for reproductive freedom, raise public awareness about reproductive health and rights, educate young people about sexual health, and create lasting cultural and social change in Portland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ohio State University students likewise<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=16827\"><span>listed<\/span><\/a> <span>Planned Parenthood as a sponsor for a student-led event called \u201cSex Week.\u201d Alongside speaker events such as \u201cKink 101,\u201d \u201cDecolonizing Porn,\u201d and \u201cOnlyFans: Behind the Scenes\u201d was a seminar entitled \u201cAbortions Explained Plainly: A Panel of Professionals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Planned Parenthood has also managed to establish links with several colleges that profess a Christian foundation. As Students for Life of America<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsforlife.org\/2021\/03\/03\/students-for-life-of-america-finds-planned-parenthood-infiltration-at-christian-colleges-universities-widespread\/\"><span>revealed<\/span><\/a> <span>in March 2021, at least two dozen universities associated with the Roman Catholic Church and a variety of Protestant denominations advertise Planned Parenthood\u2019s internship programs, welcome the group to campus for speaker events, and refer students to their reproductive services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Given current evidence, it seems that the abortion industry\u2019s efforts have been fruitful. According to one<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/almost-80-percent-college-students-say-abortion-should-legal-1441807\"><span>poll<\/span><\/a><span>, up to 80% of college students agree that abortion should be permissible under the law, while only 5% believe that it should be illegal in all cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Financial opportunity largely explains Planned Parenthood\u2019s fascination with academia as a prime target for ideological conditioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An earlier Students for Life<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2012\/05\/10\/planned-parenthood-targeting-college-students-says-pro-life-group\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a> <span>indicated that among the 780 Planned Parenthood facilities active across the United States in January 2012, up to 79% resided within five miles of a university.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s Planned Parenthood\u2019s business model to increase the number of abortions they perform because that\u2019s where they make money,\u201d Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/planned-parenthood-targeting-college-students-says-pro-life-161805486.html\">told<\/a> The Daily Caller after the organization published its report. \u201cThe abortion giant sees college women as prime targets to increase their bottom line because women between the ages of 18-24 account for 43% of abortions done each year. They are the target market for the abortion industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>More recently, another<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2019\/03\/06\/california-bill-would-mandate-free-abortions-at-all-college-and-university-campuses-3\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a> <span>found that there is an abortion clinic within six miles of every public college in the state of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, location is inextricably linked to profitability. As the pro-abortion<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2017\/many-us-abortion-patients-seek-abortion-care-more-once-lifetime#\"><span>Guttmacher Institute<\/span><\/a> <span>admitted in a study, \u201cthe likelihood of having had a prior abortion decreased as the distance a patient lived from the facility increased.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Response under the Biden administration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>With the Democratic Party in control of the executive and legislative branches, pro-life members of Congress acknowledge that they face many obstacles in dismantling the abortion-academia industrial complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMaking money off of the loss of life is grotesque, inhumane, and unacceptable,\u201d Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told The Daily Wire. \u201cThe Biden administration and congressional Democrats will challenge us at every turn, but I remain firm in my commitment to protect and stand in defense of the dignity of life from the moment of conception.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rep.
