The \u2063NAACP, Brennan Center for Justice, \u2062and the ACLU are also among the groups that signed the letter opposing the SAVE\u200b Act.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Self-proclaimed \u201ccivil rights\u201d groups signed a letter suggesting a bill that keeps foreign nationals from registering to vote in U.S. elections is a racist attempt \u201cto elicit irrational fear of the growing number of citizens of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights published the <a href=\"https:\/\/civilrights.org\/resource\/civil-rights-groups-letter-in-opposition-to-save-act-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> Tuesday, arguing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act \u2013 which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections \u2013 \u201cseeks to intimidate members of immigrant communities and communities of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter baselessly called the bill, which <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/11\/if-democrats-wanted-to-reassure-voters-of-safe-elections-they-would-have-backed-the-save-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> in the House of Representatives Wednesday, \u201cunnecessary and dangerous\u201d and claimed it \u201cseeks to promote fear-mongering and divisive rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The letter also claims that concerns about noncitizen voting are unfounded because \u201cfederal law already prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections.\u201d It doesn\u2019t explain, however, instances in which foreign nationals have slipped onto voter rolls in the United States. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Virginia, for example, more than 11,000 aliens were initially listed on the state\u2019s voter roll within the past decade,\u201d the Heritage Foundation\u2019s Matthew Tragesser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/election-integrity\/commentary\/illegal-aliens-are-still-voting-our-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> Wednesday. \u201cIn New Jersey, at least 616 known aliens ended up in the state\u2019s voter registration system just a few years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In North Carolina, roughly 10 percent of noncitizens surveyed at an apartment complex admitted to being registered to vote, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OversightPR\/status\/1808873149745803642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to an investigation by Muckraker.com and the Heritage Foundation\u2019s Oversight Project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>What are these groups masquerading as \u201ccivil rights\u201d organizations \u2013 and why would they oppose enforcing the law by requiring proof of citizenship?<\/p>\n<h2>Democrat Priorities<\/h2>\n<p>Many of the groups behind the letter are left-leaning, and many specifically champion voting practices that make it easier for Democrats to win.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Popular Democracy is a leftist group that focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/center-for-popular-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mobilizing voters<\/a>, according to InfluenceWatch. The group partners with \u201chigh-impact base-building organizations, organizing alliances, and progressive unions.\u201d According to the group\u2019s website, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.populardemocracy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aims<\/a> to \u201ccreate an inclusive, equitable society where people of color, immigrants, working families, women, and LGBTQ communities thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fair Elections Center is a left-leaning litigation group that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/fair-elections-center-fair-elections-legal-network\/\">seeks<\/a> to \u201coverturn voter identification laws\u201d and allow felons to vote, according to InfluenceWatch. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairelectionscenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operates<\/a> the Campus Vote Project, which drives turnout among college students. The group was a project of the New Venture Fund, under the umbrella of leftist dark money group <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/10\/arabella-sheds-light-on-the-dark-money-groups-remaking-america-millions-of-dollars-at-a-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arabella Advisors<\/a>, until it launched as independent in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/organization\/national-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Vote<\/a> advocates for replacing the Electoral College, which it claims has origins in the \u201cslavery era,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalvote.com\/?gad_source=1&#038;gbraid=0AAAAAonA2aOQxnJZNUzISaI2sx0_YjJZu&#038;gclid=Cj0KCQjwhb60BhClARIsABGGtw-TiFm12uJqAbkB4xXVQ85WXt-8Hvr35WYX9-e7HP4mT9Yu8L44AmYaAqHuEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>. The Secure Elections Network is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/organization\/secure-elections-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left-wing<\/a> group founded in 2020 that supports mail-in voting and other Democratic election policies.<\/p>\n<p>Vote.org is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-lefts-response-to-failure-is-to-redefine-it-as-success\/\" title=\"The Left\u2019s Response To Failure Is To Redefine It As Success\">supposedly nonpartisan group<\/a> that promotes voter registration among groups likely to vote for Democrats, as The Federalist previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/12\/14\/how-tax-exempt-nonprofits-skirt-u-s-law-to-turn-out-democrats-for-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. The group often echoes left-wing concerns of \u201cthreats to democracy.\u201d Vote.org also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tools.vote.org\/partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partners<\/a> with leftist groups like the Trans Empowerment Project and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.org\/ballot-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborates<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techandciviclife.org\/our-work\/civic-information\/how-its-used\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with<\/a> the Center for Tech and Civic Life, which <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/13\/republican-led-house-must-ban-private-funding-of-elections-or-force-democrats-to-defend-it-on-the-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funneled<\/a> $328 million from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to local election offices to boost Democratic turnout in the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>The NAACP, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/william-j-brennan-center-for-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brennan Center for Justice<\/a>, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also signed the letter. The ACLU is reportedly planning legal <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/newsroom\/democrats-prepare-for-more-lawfare-ahead-of-trump-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attacks<\/a> in case former President Donald Trump wins a second term, according to UnHerd. And when the Biden DOJ sued Alabama for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-meddling-doj-targets-alabamas-ban-on-ballot-trafficking\/\" title=\"Biden&#039;s DOJ Challenges Alabama&#039;s Prohibition on Ballot Trafficking\">law banning ballot harvesting<\/a>, the ACLU\u2019s state affiliate <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/19\/bidens-meddling-doj-targets-alabamas-ban-on-ballot-trafficking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backed<\/a> the DOJ. <\/p>\n<p>The Protect Democracy Project was formed to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/protect-democracy-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oppose<\/a>\u201d Trump\u2019s policies, according to InfluenceWatch. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/electiontaskforce.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operates<\/a> the National Task Force on Election Crises, a network of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/10\/leftist-elections-task-force-is-a-whos-who-of-infamous-election-meddlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">powerful<\/a> leftist election meddlers.<\/p>\n<p>Other activist groups including the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/splc-action-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lobbying<\/a> arm, Greenpeace, the Women\u2019s March, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund <a href=\"https:\/\/civilrights.org\/resource\/civil-rights-groups-letter-in-opposition-to-save-act-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed<\/a> the document, as did the powerful left-wing unions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afscme.org\/press\">American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees<\/a>, American Federation of Teachers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org\/press\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AFT<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/about-nea\/media-center\/press-releases\">National Education Association<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seiu.org\/press\">Service Employees International Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Logan Washburn is a staff writer covering election integrity.
