The bills, SB 603 and SB\u2064 604, make it harder\u200b to initiate a recount,\u2063 only \u200ballowing \u2064it under specific circumstances.\u200d These \u2062laws \u2062shift the power to investigate fraud from a bipartisan board \u200cto partisan county prosecutors \u200dor the attorney\u200d general. In\u200c Detroit, which \u2063has a history\u2064 of election issues, the\u2064 Wayne\u200d County Prosecutor&#8217;s Office\u2064 does\u2064 not handle election fraud cases, leaving them to be referred to the\u200c Michigan attorney general. Critics argue that this setup \u2064may \u2063not be\u200b impartial, especially since the \u2063attorney\u2063 general has\u200d shown bias in the past. \u200cThe changes in\u2063 the law\u200d could impact future\u200b elections and investigations into potential misconduct.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Left-wing district attorneys will get to decide whether or not to investigate claims of election problems in Michigan, thanks to two bills Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/07\/08\/gov-whitmer-signs-bipartisan-bills-honoring-blue-star-mothers-protecting-fair-and-free-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">championed<\/a> SB 603 and SB 604, which dictate that a recount can only occur under a narrow set of conditions: There must be an allegation of \u201cerror\u201d \u2013 not fraud \u2013 and anyone alleging error must prove it would have changed the outcome of the election. As The Federalist has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/01\/michigan-democrat-bill-preemptively-chills-questions-about-election-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, the bill also doubles the fee to request a recount. <\/p>\n<p>Whitmer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2024\/07\/08\/gov-whitmer-signs-bipartisan-bills-honoring-blue-star-mothers-protecting-fair-and-free-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> the bills \u201censur[e] that the security of every vote is protected and that losing parties cannot stop the winners from taking office.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>These new laws, which already make it prohibitively difficult to conduct a recount, eliminate the bipartisan Board of State Canvassers\u2019 power to investigate fraud, instead forcing them to delegate the task to partisan county prosecutors or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mcconnell-unloads-on-bidens-radical-and-underqualified-hhs-nominee-xavier-becerra\/\" title=\"McConnell Unloads On Biden\u2019s \u2018Radical And Underqualified\u2019 HHS Nominee Xavier Becerra\">partisan attorney general<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Detroit, the Wayne County Prosecutor\u2019s Office \u2013 headed by <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Kym_Worthy\">Democrat<\/a> District Attorney Kym Worthy \u2013 doesn\u2019t even handle election fraud cases, according to Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Maria Miller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not handle election fraud cases in Wayne County,\u201d Miller wrote to The Federalist in an email. \u201cThose are referred to the Michigan attorney general.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Detroit has a long history of election problems. Local outlet The Detroit News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2016\/12\/12\/records-many-votes-detroits-precincts\/95363314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> in 2016 that more votes were cast than there were voters in one-third of the city\u2019s precincts. And in 2019, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/detroit\/2019\/12\/11\/detroit-dead-voters-election\/4397845002\/\">lawsuit<\/a> claimed the city did not properly clean its voter rolls, leaving thousands of dead and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-rep-ted-budd-more-work-to-do-on-election-integrity-in-north-carolina\/\" title=\"Exclusive \u2014 Rep. Ted Budd: &#039;More Work to Do&#039; on Election Integrity in North Carolina\">duplicate voter registrations<\/a> on the records, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/detroit\/2019\/12\/11\/detroit-dead-voters-election\/4397845002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Detroit Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In the 2020 election, Republican poll watchers in Detroit were <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/11\/06\/election-fraud-in-detroit-they-did-not-want-us-to-see-what-was-happening\/\">removed<\/a> from a polling station, as The Federalist previously reported. Former President Donald Trump\u2019s campaign filed suit over the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new bill, allegations of election misconduct in cases like these would be referred to the county prosecutor. And when the county prosecutor doesn\u2019t handle election fraud, like in Detroit, victims of fraud would be left only to appeal to the state\u2019s attorney general.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But in Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel is hardly an unbiased arbiter of these matters. After 16 individuals made a contingency plan in case, in the confusion and aftermath of the 2020 election, it turned out that Trump had won Michigan, Nessel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/ag\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/07\/18\/michigan-attorney-general-dana-nessel-charges-16-false-electors#:~:text=Attorney%20General%3A%20Michigan%20Attorney%20General,Election%20Law%20and%20Forgery%20Felonies&#038;text=The%20Michigan%20Attorney%20General%20has,the%20Catholic%20Church%20is%20required.\">charged<\/a> these so-called \u201cfalse electors\u201d with felonies for forgery and violating elections law.<\/p>\n<p>Nessel also engaged in fear-mongering in June, when she reportedly gave an address with the Michigan State House\u2019s LGBT Caucus about the supposed <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2024\/06\/06\/nessel-house-lgbtq-caucus-warn-that-trump-and-gop-endanger-hard-fought-rights\/\">dangers<\/a> of \u201cTrump\u2019s homophobic, transphobic and very hateful agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe only actual way to save LGBTQ people from being launched backwards literally 50 years, if not further, is to reelect Joe Biden,\u201d she reportedly went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>So if there are other allegations of election \u201cerror\u201d in Detroit in 2024 \u2014 which is likely, considering that the same and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/20\/inside-democrats-newest-election-takeover-scheme-report-unmasks-dark-money-group-youve-probably-never-heard-of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar<\/a> election meddlers from 2020 are still trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/19\/infamous-zuckbucks-group-tries-to-election-meddle-again-this-time-with-federal-tax-dollars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interfere<\/a> in our <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/17\/zuckbucks-group-trains-election-offices-on-how-to-put-bidenbucks-to-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elections<\/a> \u2014 cases would likely be referred to Nessel for investigation. And Nessel has already made it clear she thinks reelecting Trump would be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Even if a county prosecutor did not have a policy of referring election fraud cases to Nessel\u2019s office, the prosecutors of jurisdictions including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johndewane4prosecutor.com\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lansing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalcounty.com\/clerk\/elections_voting\/elections\/results.php?election=November+3,+2020+General+Election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kalamazoo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/ann-arbor\/2020\/08\/savit-takes-lead-in-closely-watched-washtenaw-county-prosecutor-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ann Arbor<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/flint\/2020\/07\/two-democrats-square-off-in-genesee-county-prosecutor-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flint<\/a> are all Democrats, whose party is often the one accused of election misconduct. Critics contend that investigating allegations of election fraud should be placed in the hands of the nonpartisan Board of State Canvassers, not partisan county prosecutors.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Republicans like state Rep. Jay DeBoyer say the change <a href=\"https:\/\/gophouse.org\/posts\/rep-deboyer-misguided-plan-seeks-to-warp-michigans-recount-process-election-laws\">violates<\/a> a system of checks and balances that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/progressive-policies-need-to-be-fought-off-by-states-rep-steube\/\" title=\"Progressive Policies Need to Be Fought Off by States: Rep. Steube\">ensure election integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have time-honored laws in this state that allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dem-controlled-michigan-senate-passes-bill-banning-bipartisan-election-boards-from-investigating-voter-fraud\/\" title=\"Michigan Senate, Controlled by Democrats, Approves Bill Prohibiting Bipartisan Election Boards from Probing Voter Fraud\">bipartisan county boards<\/a> of canvassers the ability to investigate fraud, wrongdoing or a violation of the law,\u201d DeBoyer, who is also a member of the House Elections Committee, said in a press release. \u201cThese bills delete multiple references to fraud and even strike out references to ballot tampering.
