However, the \u200bdeclaration has come under \u2064attack from well-funded environmental\u200b advocacy groups, with \u200bThe Guardian \u200bserving as a platform for these interests.\u200b The \u200bGuardian has received substantial funding from organizations \u2064aligned with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/aspca-pushes-anti-meat-agenda-while-sending-2-of-budget-to-animal-shelters-watchdog\/\" title=\"ASPCA pushes anti-meat agenda while sending 2% of budget to animal shelters: Watchdog\">animal welfare groups<\/a> and has published critical\u200c articles targeting the Dublin Declaration and\u2063 its supporters. Despite these attacks, the authors of \u200dthe declaration\u2064 maintain that their efforts are\u2063 driven by a commitment \u200bto science \u2064and societal responsibility, rather than financial gain.\u2064 This\u2063 controversy highlights the \u200congoing debate over the \u200drole of animal agriculture in the food system and\u200b the influence of environmental activism on public discourse.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The war on meat is in full swing as far-left environmental groups engage in a coordinated effort to smear proponents of sustainable livestock as industry bogeymen seduced by corporate greed. <\/p>\n<p>In October 2022, a coalition of over 1,000 scientists signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dublin-declaration.org\/\">decla<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dublin-declaration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">r<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dublin-declaration.org\/\">ation<\/a> stressing that the optimal nutrition delivered by a meat-based diet was vital in alleviating world hunger.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cDublin Declaration of Scientists on the Societal Role of Livestock,\u201d which advocates for a more \u201cbalanced view of the future of animal agriculture,\u201d was written to push back against a highly funded, globally coordinated effort to discredit animal agriculture as antithetical to human health and environmental sustainability. \u201cLivestock systems,\u201d the coalition wrote, \u201care too precious to society to become the victim of simplification, reductionism or zealotry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commonsense declaration, however, has now become the target of well-funded \u201cgreen\u201d advocacy groups masquerading environmental activism as critical journalism, primarily through The Guardian, one of Europe\u2019s most influential papers.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian has become a conduit for far-left environmental interests to air opposition research. The paper shares some of the same funding sources as an animal activist group called \u201cSentient.\u201d Initially <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/mission\/#:~:text=Founded%20in%202018%2C%20Sentient%27s%20content,workers%20%E2%80%94%20and%20so%20much%20more.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">established <\/a>in 2018 as \u201cSentient Media,\u201d the group is a 501(c)(3) advocacy organization with a mission to publish \u201cstories and solutions to explain factory farms and their effect on climate, animals, public health, politics and more.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/funding\/#:~:text=Sentient%20Media%20is%20a%20501,and%20the%20Open%20Philanthropy%20Project.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Founding donors<\/a> include animal welfare groups such as the J\u00e4rvenp\u00e4\u00e4 Foundation, the Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund, and the Open Philanthropy Project.<\/p>\n<p>The Open Philanthropy Project was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openphilanthropy.org\/about-us\/\">launched<\/a> in 2014 with a co-founder of Facebook under the generic mission statement \u201cto help others as much as we can with the resources available to us.\u201d The group has become a close ally to the vegan food industry with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openphilanthropy.org\/grants\/impossible-foods-rd-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investments<\/a> made in Impossible Foods \u201cto accelerate the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/to-greener-pastures-beyond-meats-dismisses-almost-one-fifth-of-employees-executive-who-bit-guys-nose-allegedly\/\" title=\"TO Greener Pastures: Beyond Meats Dismisses Almost One-Fifth Of Employees, Executive Who Bit Guy\u2019s Nose Allegedly\">plant-based meats<\/a>.\u201d In 2017, Open Philanthropy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openphilanthropy.org\/grants\/theguardian-org-journalism-on-factory-farming-and-farm-animal-cruelty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">awarded<\/a> theguardian.org, a nonprofit linked to The Guardian, with a nearly $900,000 grant \u201cto support journalism on factory farming and farm animal cruelty.\u201d The nonprofit was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openphilanthropy.org\/grants\/theguardian-org-journalism-on-factory-farming-and-animal-cruelty-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">awarded<\/a> with another $900,000 grant in 2020 to continue reporting on issues related to animal welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Last fall, The Guardian published a supposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/oct\/27\/revealed-industry-figures-declaration-scientists-backing-meat-eating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expos\u00e9<\/a> on \u201cindustry figures behind\u201d the Dublin Declaration. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA public statement signed by more than 1,000 scientists in support of meat production and consumption has numerous links to the livestock industry, the Guardian can reveal,\u201d the outlet reported in October. \u201cThe declaration was published a year ago but gave no information on its provenance. Its supporters appear to be overwhelmingly researchers in animal, agricultural, and food sciences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dublin-declaration.org\/authorship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">page <\/a>on the declaration\u2019s website now outlines the potential conflicts of interest with the statement\u2019s affiliated authors but makes clear \u201cno financial funding or other material support has been received from any third-party source, whether private or public, to arrange, coordinate, co-author or publish the Dublin Declaration of Scientists on the Societal Role of Livestock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor various reasons of either commercial or ideological profit, coordinated campaigns are disproportionately placing blame on animal agriculture for many of the ills of the global food system,\u201d Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Leroy, a lead organizer of the declaration, told The Federalist. \u201cIf we feel compelled to engage in this debate, and take the risk of being exposed to hostility and intimidation, it is because of our academic and civic responsibilities to scientifically counteract ideological radicalism that could result in irreparable harm when put into action. To be clear: the initiators of the Declaration are not benefiting financially from their efforts in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In September 2021, The Guardian published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/sep\/21\/livestock-industry-lobbying-un-to-support-more-meat-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piece<\/a> headlined, \u201cLivestock industry lobbying UN to support more meat production.\u201d The article was authored by Sophie Kevany, a freelance writer who also <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/author\/sophiekevany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes extensively<\/a> about animal agriculture for Sentient Media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLivestock groups have been lobbying the UN to support more meat and dairy production before a high-profile summit on food sustainability,\u201d Kevany reported. \u201cDocuments obtained by Greenpeace Unearthed \u2014 the investigative arm of environmental NGO Greenpeace \u2014 and seen by the Guardian, show livestock industry bodies threatening to withdraw if others in their discussion group at the summit do not share their \u2018common goal.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kevany quoted New York University Environmental Studies Professor Matthew Hayek promoting the idea of a \u201cscientific consensus\u201d surrounding the purported ills of livestock consumption, the very consensus undermined by the existence of the Dublin Declaration. Hayek is a <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/un-climate-plan-emissions-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frequent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sentientmedia.org\/dublin-declaration-animal-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commentator<\/a> in Sentient whenever the group\u2019s reporters need expert testimony to discredit meat-based diets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies in the highest-ranking scientific journals have concluded that cutting meat and dairy consumption in rich countries is the single best way to reduce a person\u2019s impact on the environment and that the climate crisis cannot be beaten without such cuts,\u201d The Guardian claimed in its reporting on the Dublin Declaration last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople already eat more meat than health guidelines recommend in most developed nations,\u201d read The Guardian. <\/p>\n<p>Except American meat consumption has remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2016\/12\/13\/whats-on-your-table-how-americas-diet-has-changed-over-the-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unchanged<\/a> since the 1970s while more grains and seed oils are making their way into diet contributing to insulin resistance and chronic disease. And despite the fear-mongering over global livestock emissions, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41612-023-00349-8#citeas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> last year from a trio of Spanish researchers found that emissions from wildlife were comparable to domesticated animals raised in natural grazing systems.
