City Council<\/a> passed a law requiring childcare center directors to have a bachelor\u2019s degree and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>teachers<\/a> to hold an associate\u2019s degree in early education. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, assistant teachers and caregivers in home-based daycares are required to obtain a Child Development Associate\u2019s credential.<\/p>\n<p>After years of legal trouble, the regulation took effect in 2023 following the dismissal of lawsuit challenges by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/appeals-courts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>U.S. Court of Appeals<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>While supporters argue that this regulation helps professionalize the childcare industry, opponents claim it is another barrier for otherwise qualified caregivers and drives up costs for childcare.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/tootris.com\/edu\/blog\/parents\/cost-of-child-care-in-washington-d-c-a-breakdown-for-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>report<\/a> from Tootris News and Education Center, D.C. is one of the most expensive states for childcare, with an average of $24,243 a year ($2,020 per month) in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents in D.C. are facing an uphill battle with childcare costs spiraling out of control, making it a privilege only the wealthy can afford,\u201d said Lee in a statement. \u201cThe current regulations are not only impractical but also harmful, pushing skilled childcare workers out of their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said that this new bill will bring \u201cmuch-needed flexibility and affordability\u201d to the system at a time when families need it most.<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/under3dc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Child-Care-Economic-Impact-Report-U3DC-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>survey<\/a> by Under 3 DC, 57% of parents said the cost of early education would affect their ability to continue living in D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/katie-britt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Katie Britt<\/a> (R-AL) also supports this initiative. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shortage of common sense in Washington continues to make it harder and harder on American families,\u201d Britt said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, a completely unnecessary D.C. requirement for childcare workers to hold a college degree contributed to depleting the local childcare workforce.
