Once a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/progressives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>progressive<\/a> figure, the fifth-term congressman has bolted toward the middle as he seeks to replace retiring centrist Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ).<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, Gallego\u2019s campaign said he was working to secure the southern border on multiple fronts and whacked his Republican opponent as a \u201cpower-hungry liar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuben Gallego is a Marine combat veteran whose number one priority is securing our border and keeping Arizonans safe, which is why he is fighting tirelessly to hire more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">border patrol agents<\/a>, fix our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-biden-accidentally-admits-his-administration-has-been-lying-about-the-border-crisis-for-years\/\" title=\"VIDEO: Biden Unintentionally Confesses to Years of Border Crisis Deception\">broken asylum system<\/a>, crack down on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fentanyl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>fentanyl<\/a> trafficking, and invest in proven technology \u2014 all to increase our border security,\u201d Gallego spokeswoman Hannah Goss said. \u201cMeanwhile, Kari Lake is a power-hungry liar who will do or say anything to gain power, even if it means opposing a bipartisan, border-patrol backed bill to finally address the border crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the virtual fundraiser, a donor asked participating Democratic Senate hopefuls, including Gallego, how they \u201cenvision a new immigration framework to look like, and how it would be possible to move forward\u201d in a divided Congress. <\/p>\n<p>Gallego responded: \u201cI probably won\u2019t be on the committee of jurisdiction. That\u2019s the Department of [inaudible]. I\u2019ve largely focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-demand-hold-on-biden-commerce-pick-over-huawei-concerns\/\" title=\"Republicans Demand Hold on Biden Commerce Pick Over Huawei Concerns\">national security issues<\/a>. That\u2019s my background. I have a degree from Harvard in foreign affairs, as well as had been on the Armed Services [Committee] for 10 years and started some of the Baltic Caucus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cBut I guess from my general point of view, since I do immigration stuff once in a while, it would be something that harkens back to some of the Gang of Eight legislation that focuses on border security, as well as, of course, having some level of very secure and flexible visas for work permits, as well as, of course, rectifying and making sure people in the United States that have been here \u2014 have illegally been working but don\u2019t have access to fix their status \u2014 have an opportunity to do that by paying a fine, making sure they go through a background check and getting in line behind people that have legally gone through the process here. Of course, taking care of the status of Dreamers. That\u2019s probably what I would be looking at. Colin Allred (D-TX) in Texas, former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL) in Florida, and Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) in Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The money raised was split evenly between all five candidates, according to the virtual event\u2019s invitation. Donors had the option of contributing six different amounts ranging from $100 to $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Gallego has crossed party lines on some recent immigration bills, a move critics say is driven by his Senate bid.<\/p>\n<p>This year, he voted for the GOP-led Laken Riley Act to detain any migrant accused of burglary or theft, and he supported a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-needles-johnson-after-failed-mayorkas-impeachment-vote\/\" title=\"White House taunts Johnson over Mayorkas impeachment failure\">bipartisan border security measure<\/a> to crack down on illegal crossings. The proposal, which failed after a Trump-fueled GOP revolt, was criticized by Lake as insufficiently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/conservative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>conservative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/House-Republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican House<\/a> on Wednesday passed Trump-backed legislation to ban noncitizens from voting in federal elections and expand proof-of-citizenship requirements, which Gallego voted against out of a stated fear that it was too expansive and could inadvertently prevent Americans from casting ballots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, only U.S. citizens should vote,\u201d Gallego said. \u201cBut this bill isn\u2019t about that, it\u2019s about making it harder for Arizonans to vote, including married women, servicemembers, Native Arizonans, seniors, and people with disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lake said Gallego \u201cspat in the face of every law-abiding American when he voted to allow illegal immigrants to vote in our elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May, Gallego and dozens of other Democrats voted with Republicans in favor of overturning a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/washington-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Washington, D.C.<\/a>, law allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections.
