Gavin Newsom signs a new bill on gender ideology in public schools. <\/p>\n<p>The bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtqcaucus.legislature.ca.gov\/sites\/lgbtcaucus.legislature.ca.gov\/files\/safety_act\/factsheet.pdf\">Assembly Bill 1955<\/a> \u2014 also known as the SAFETY Act \u2014 prohibits public schools from notifying parents if their child requests to use pronouns that conflict with the child\u2019s sex or a name that differs from the name the child was given at birth. Students may also elect to use the bathrooms of the opposite sex and the school will not be obligated to tell parents. <\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f977e829f9b22163708e83ab8a8fe920 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-f977e829f9b22163708e83ab8a8fe920\"><\/div>\n<p>During a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y2BJCjMkakI&#038;t=1719s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press conference<\/a> Wednesday morning, a reporter asked the governor about his plans for the bill, which is currently sitting on his desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019ve got 60 bills, that\u2019s one of them, and I\u2019ll let you know very shortly and we\u2019ll be reviewing that with my team and staff, the details of that bill,\u201d Newsom said. \u201cI\u2019ve been following that, I\u2019m well aware of the LGBTQ Caucus and their advocacy in that space. I haven\u2019t read the details of the bill yet, as is the case, as you know well, all too well, I try to familiarize myself with the nuances and details before I opine publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reporter pressed, pointing out that Newsom has long thought about this issue, but the governor deferred to the fact that the bill is currently pending. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents have a right to know what their own minor children are doing at school \u2014 and school officials have no right to keep secrets from parents,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/libertyjusticecenter.org\/pressrelease\/statement-on-the-announcement-of-california-assembly-bill-1955\/\">said<\/a> Jacob Huebert, president of Liberty Justice Center, in a statement. \u201cWe will continue to stand with parents and the school districts that want to respect their rights \u2014 and we\u2019ll continue to represent them free of charge, at no cost to taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-42c36f6257517abee0b0feb2ad5b8191 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-42c36f6257517abee0b0feb2ad5b8191\"><\/div>\n<p>The bill was pushed by the state legislature\u2019s LGBTQ Caucus, along with Tony Thurmond, California state superintendent of public instruction. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolicies that forcibly \u2018out\u2019 pupils without their consent remove opportunities for LGBTQ+ young people and their families to build trust and have these conversations when they are ready,\u201d the bill <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1955\">reads<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>AB 1955 passed in the state legislature by a vote of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article289582908.html\">60-15<\/a> and is awaiting a signature or veto from the governor. <\/p>\n<p>Republican Assemblyman Jim Patterson spoke about the danger that a bill of this nature causes at a press conference with the California Family Council. <\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-62773f06f524b19a632c25594c812151 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-62773f06f524b19a632c25594c812151\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn the nearly 12 years that I have been in the State Assembly, I have never seen an effort to damage the relationship between children and their parents like this one,\u201d Patterson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.californiafamily.org\/2024\/06\/ca-senate-passes-ab-1955-a-government-imposed-wall-between-parent-in-child\/\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Newsom has long championed LGBT causes. He signed nine bills in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.advocate.com\/law\/newsom-california-pro-lgbtq-bills\">2023<\/a> reinforcing issues such as \u201cstandards for all-gender restrooms in public and private K-12 schools\u201d and \u201cLGBTQ+ cultural competency training for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chicago-mayor-orders-teachers-back-into-classrooms-union-vows-to-call-a-strike\/\" title=\"Chicago Mayor Orders Teachers Back Into Classrooms, Union Vows To Call A Strike\">public school teachers<\/a> and staff,\u201d many of which furthered efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-admin-empowers-teachers-unions-to-push-gender-ideology-and-critical-race-theory-propaganda\/\" title=\"Biden Admin Empowers Teachers Unions To Push Gender Ideology And Critical Race Theory Propaganda\">push gender ideology<\/a> in California schools. <\/p>\n<p>Newsom, however, vetoed a bill requiring courts to consider a child\u2019s \u201cgender identity\u201d in parental custody cases, specifically how said parent feels about their child\u2019s identity. <\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s press office did not respond directly to questions from The Federalist but referred to Wednesday morning\u2019s press conference.
