Those states include Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re giving 15,000 American workers the chance to keep their jobs,\u201d Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on a call with reporters previewing the announcement. \u201cWe\u2019re giving the communities who built American cars for generations the chance to build the vehicles of the future, and we\u2019re giving American manufacturing a chance to get off the sidelines and get a better competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program will additionally lead to 2,900 new jobs, officials said, with most of those filled by labor union members, and could nearly double the annual domestic output of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis investment will create thousands of good-paying, union manufacturing jobs and retain even more\u2014 from Lansing, Michigan to Fort Valley, Georgia \u2014 by helping auto companies retool, reboot, and rehire in the same factories and communities,\u201d Biden said in a prepared statement. \u201cThis delivers on my commitment to never give up on the manufacturing communities and workers that were left behind by my predecessor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From a political standpoint, the announcement represents a doubling down on Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1263470\/biden-announces-900-million-in-funding-for-electric-vehicle-charging-stations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"EV push\">EV push<\/a> as Trump makes disparaging EVs a central theme of his campaign. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Joe Biden\u2019s extremist mandate is allowed to stand, gas-powered cars will be gone, Iowa ethanol will be totally destroyed, and the economy of this state will be decimated,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2449952\/trump-commits-to-undo-bidens-absolutely-insane-job-killing-electric-vehicle-plan-if-elected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said last fall\">said last fall<\/a>. \u201cWhen I\u2019m back in the White House, I will save Iowa ethanol by repealing Joe Biden\u2019s absolutely insane, job-killing electric vehicle mandate on day one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump also made a speech in Michigan last fall during which he warned, \u201cThe auto industry is being assassinated. \u2026 It\u2019s a hit job on Michigan and on Detroit. \u2026 All of these cars will be manufactured in foreign lands that you couldn\u2019t care less about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Criticizing electric vehicles has since become a standard portion of his rally speeches.<\/p>\n<p>But Biden\u2019s team evidently thinks promoting electric vehicles is a winning strategy. Officials promised that the new program, which uses funds authorized by the Inflation Reduction Act, would lead to a $3.9 billion economic impact that also met climate change goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can and must build a clean energy economy that benefits everyone,\u201d John Podesta, Biden\u2019s senior adviser for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/derrick-hollie-bidens-spec-employees-make-sure-your-energy-costs-remain-high\/\" title=\"Derrick Hollie: Biden\u2019s SPEC Employees Make Sure Your Energy Costs Remain High\">international climate policy<\/a>, said, \u201cone that brings new industries to life, creates the high-performance, clean vehicles of the future, leaves workers better off than they were before, improves public health, and takes care of our planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many details of the program remain unresolved, such as exactly when the projects would begin. The release noted that there would be \u201cnegotiations\u201d with companies receiving any grants, along with milestones set to unlock future rounds of funding. <\/p>\n<p>Projects would be subject to environmental reviews, companies would be expected to \u201cpartner\u201d with labor unions, and the release says the Department of Energy \u201cmay cancel negotiations and rescind the selection for any reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not all manufacturing facilities under the initiative will make strictly electric vehicles, as some could manufacture hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell autos.
