The Safeguarding American Voter\u200c Eligibility (SAVE) Act, introduced \u200bby Republicans, \u200caims to amend\u2063 the 1993 National Voter Registration Act to make\u200c proof \u200cof \u2063citizenship a requirement for voter \u200cregistration. \u2062Democrats\u2062 argue \u2062that the legislation is\u2063 unnecessary because noncitizen voting is already \u2062illegal. However, \u200bthe \u2062bill would\u200c add enforcement mechanisms \u200bto ensure that only citizens are able to\u2063 vote. Critics of the bill\u200c also claim that it would\u2064 prevent Americans from registering to vote with\u200d just their driver&#8217;s license, \u2064but the bill aims to prevent foreign nationals from obtaining documents that could allow them to register \u200billegally. the SAVE\u200b Act seeks to strengthen the \u2062integrity\u2063 of American \u2064elections\u2064 by ensuring that only eligible\u200c citizens are able to vote.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Democrats spent eight years feigning outrage about foreign election interference because they falsely claim it led to Donald Trump\u2019s election. But 198 House Democrats voted against a bill on Wednesday that would help keep foreign nationals from interfering in American elections by requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Five Democrats joined Republicans in the vote of 221 to 198. Four Republicans and 10 Democrats did not take part in the voting.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans introduced the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/09\/republicans-introduce-save-act-to-block-illegal-aliens-from-voting-in-u-s-elections\/\">Act<\/a> that would amend the 1993 National Voter Registration Act to make documentary proof of citizenship a requirement for voter registration. The 1993 law enables driver\u2019s license applicants to register to vote through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-idea-of-secure-elections-is-letting-potential-aliens-vote\/\" title=\"Biden&#039;s Idea Of &#039;Secure Elections&#039; Is Letting Potential Aliens Vote\">state motor vehicle agencies<\/a>. While registrants must attest to their citizenship status by checking a box under penalty of perjury, there is no enforcement mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats contest the legislation is useless since noncitizen voting is already illegal, with House Minority Whip Katherine Clark urging Democrats to \u201cVOTE NO\u201d on the bill earlier this week, as Axios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/06\/house-democrats-oppose-gop-noncitizen-voting-bill?utm_campaign=editorial&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. Democrats ran with this line during a floor debate on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is against the law for noncitizens to register to vote and to vote in federal elections,\u201d Democratic New York Rep. Joseph Morelle insisted.<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said \u201cit is the state of the law that only citizens can vote in federal elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections,\u201d Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell added. \u201cUnder current law, noncitizens would face up to five years in prison for attempting to vote in federal elections and even risk being deported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re all factually correct; it <em>is<\/em> illegal for noncitizens to register to vote or vote in federal elections.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s stopping them? A small square box on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/leading-candidate-for-new-york-city-mayor-may-not-live-in-city-report-suggests\/\" title=\"Leading Candidate For New York City Mayor May Not Live In City, Report Suggests\">voter registration form<\/a> that individuals must check affirming that they\u2019re telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>The current law is largely toothless, resting on the honor system to ensure that American citizens\u2019 votes aren\u2019t diluted by illegal votes. That honor system enabled 11,198 noncitizens, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2019\/jan\/30\/pennsylvania-11000-non-citizens-registered-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington Times<\/a>, to register to vote in Pennsylvania despite \u2014 as Democrats have made so clear \u2014 it being illegal.<\/p>\n<p>By ensuring that no one could join the voter rolls without proving their citizenship, the SAVE Act adds teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Another critique Democrats lobbed at the legislation on Wednesday was that it would prevent Americans from registering to vote with just their driver\u2019s license. In fact, not everyone who can flash a driver\u2019s license is legally eligible to vote in American elections.<\/p>\n<p>States use HAVA, also known as the Help America Vote Act, which checks information about newly registered voters in federal elections against information stored in the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/what-a-viral-voting-claim-got-wrong-and-why-americans-are-still-right-to-be-concerned\/\" title=\"Debunking a Viral Voting Claim: Why Americans&#039; Concerns Are Valid\">motor vehicle administration database<\/a>. An individual can present his driver\u2019s license number or, if he doesn\u2019t have one, the last four digits of his Social Security number.<\/p>\n<p>But foreign nationals can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10096.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtain<\/a> both of those documents, so obviously neither one proves citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Further, individuals can easily slip through the HAVA system. Would-be voters in <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/25\/californians-with-no-drivers-license-or-ssn-can-use-a-credit-card-or-gym-membership-to-vote\/\">California<\/a> can indicate on their voter registration form that they lack both a driver\u2019s license identification number and a Social Security number. Those voters are then prompted to provide proof of identity \u2014 not citizenship \u2014 with IDs as low-security as a gym membership, utility bill, or credit card.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no reason for Democrats to oppose a law that keeps noncitizens from voting, unless they don\u2019t <em>really<\/em> have a problem with noncitizen voting. The actions of Democrats in leftist-run cities like San Francisco, where aliens can vote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-grandmother-is-running-for-her-school-board-to-fight-critical-race-theory-in-education\/\" title=\"This Grandmother Is Running For Her School Board To Fight Critical Race Theory In Education\">school board elections<\/a> if they have a child under the age of 19 living in the city, suggest as much. Similarly, New York City liberals fought tooth and nail to allow 800,000 noncitizens to vote in municipal elections but were <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/23\/null-and-void-court-declares-new-york-city-law-letting-noncitizens-vote-is-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shot down<\/a> by the court.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats voted against the SAVE Act for the same reason that not a single Democratic witness <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/12\/not-a-single-democrat-witness-in-congress-agreed-only-citizens-should-vote-in-federal-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">during<\/a> a recent Senate Judiciary hearing on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act could agree that only citizens should vote in federal elections.
