These findings\u200c cannot be brushed aside in favor of misleading research that downplays the\u200c risks associated with illegal migration.<\/p>\n<p>It is crucial for the media to\u200b provide accurate and balanced reporting on the impact of illegal immigration, especially \u2062when it comes to public\u2063 safety \u200band criminal \u200cactivity.\u2062 By misrepresenting\u200b research and ignoring the full scope of \u2062the issue, journalists fail\u200b to uphold their duty\u2063 to provide the public with truthful information.<\/p>\n<p>As public concern over \u2062illegal \u200dmigrant\u200c crime grows, it is imperative for\u200c the media to approach this\u2062 topic with transparency\u200c and integrity, \u200bensuring that the facts presented reflect\u200c the reality of the situation. The assertion is meant to push for an open southern border, even as incidences of illegal migrants <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/22\/gov-healey-shrugs-off-illegal-border-crosser-who-raped-teen-things-will-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raping<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fox28savannah.com\/news\/nation-world\/louisiana-police-arrest-illegal-immigrant-on-armed-robbery-juvenile-rape-charges-angel-matias-castellanos-orellana-kenner-border-crisis-mexico-immigration-migrant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assaulting<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/28\/mom-of-boy-killed-by-illegal-border-crosser-speaks-out-his-life-was-taken-way-too-early-by-someone-who-shouldnt-be-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">running over<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/03\/after-sexual-assault-and-murder-of-12-year-old-girl-nyt-reporter-blames-republicans-for-noticing-the-alleged-killers-are-illegals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brutally murdering<\/a> American children pile up.<\/p>\n<p>But the claim ignores the fact that all illegal migrant crime is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/20\/bidens-border-invasion-birthed-a-preventable-crime-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inherently preventable<\/a> and hinges on misrepresenting studies in ways that mislead and deceive the public. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Media Misrepresents Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Examples in the media are numerous.<strong> <\/strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/15\/us\/border-migrants-crime-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN article<\/a> published shortly after an illegal migrant attacked and killed nursing student Laken Riley in February claimed public perception of illegal migrant crime \u201cflies in the face of years of studies looking at what actually happened after immigrants came to communities across the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany researchers crunching the numbers have found there\u2019s no connection between immigration and crime,\u201d wrote CNN Senior Writer Catherine E. Shoichet. \u201cSome have even found that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article directs readers to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/11\/03\/us\/immigrants-crime-numbers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous<\/a> CNN article citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/publications\/immigration-research-policy-brief\/criminal-immigrants-texas-illegal-immigrant#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> from the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. The study, conducted by policy scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/people\/alex-nowrasteh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alex Nowrasteh<\/a>, found that illegal immigrants were arrested for and convicted of violent crimes less than native-born Americans in Texas in 2015. The study did not evaluate actual offenses, nor did it rule out any connection between immigration and crime, as Shoichet claimed. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2105.04953\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research<\/a> has shown, however, that arrest and conviction data are not adequate proxies for how often crime is committed.\u00a0Additionally, the study\u2019s use of Texas Department of Public Safety (TDPS) data has <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Report\/Misuse-Texas-Data-Understates-Illegal-Immigrant-Criminality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faced backlash<\/a> from scholars who say Nowrastesh was \u201cmisusing data\u201d in a way that led \u201cto erroneous conclusions about illegal immigrant crime rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies purporting to show low illegal immigrant crime rates in Texas fail to account for the fact that illegal immigrants are not always identified immediately upon arrest,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Report\/Misuse-Texas-Data-Understates-Illegal-Immigrant-Criminality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) researchers Sean Kennedy, Jason Richwine, and Steven A. Camarota. \u201cIn many cases, illegal immigrants are identified only after they are imprisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study concludes that illegal migrants \u201chave above average conviction rates for homicide and sexual assault\u201d when correct data is used. <\/p>\n<p>The major flaws in the Cato Institute research did not stop multiple other outlets, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/myth-migrant-crime-wave-221559898.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yahoo News<\/a>, from citing it as \u201cproof\u201d that illegal migrant crime is lower than average.<\/p>\n<p>USA Today claimed \u201cresearch suggests immigrants actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-law-is-a-teacher-michael-knowles-reacts-to-viral-video-showing-el-salvadors-crackdown-on-violent-gangs\/\" title=\"\u2018The Law Is A Teacher\u2019: Michael Knowles Reacts To Viral Video Showing El Salvador\u2019s Crackdown On Violent Gangs\">commit fewer crimes<\/a> than people born in the U.S.\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/03\/01\/undocumented-immigrant-crime-rate-not-higher\/72788637007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March article<\/a>, citing the Cato Institute study. The article also cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.2014704117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> led by sociologist Michael Light at the University of Wisconsin. <\/p>\n<p>Light\u2019s use of TDPS data also fails to stand up to scrutiny. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Light] makes the same mistake as Nowrasteh in treating illegals as fully identified by DHS at intake, even though DCJ will go on to identify more illegals who are initially placed in the DPS \u2018other\/unknown\u2019 category,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Report\/Misuse-Texas-Data-Understates-Illegal-Immigrant-Criminality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote CIS researchers<\/a>. \u201cUnlike Nowrasteh, Light then relies on unverified claims made by arrestees about their citizenship and place of birth to both supplement the \u2018legal\u2019 arrest category and create a \u2018native-born\u2019 category.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The University of Wisconsin research was also cited in articles by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/immigration\/border-coverage\/immigrants-fewer-crimes-citizens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NewsNation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-trump-riley-immigrants-crime-63181cbc7a89fe9fe28b1d0cf84c8b9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AP News<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/migrants-driving-surge-violent-crime\/story?id=108761192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC News<\/a> published this year.<\/p>\n<p>NPR echoed the claim in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/08\/1237103158\/immigrants-are-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-than-us-born-americans-studies-find\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March article<\/a>, referencing the inaccurate Cato Institute study and, oddly, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/system\/files\/working_papers\/w31440\/w31440.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stanford study<\/a> that assessed immigrants in general rather than specifically addressing illegal migrants. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-trump-riley-immigrants-crime-63181cbc7a89fe9fe28b1d0cf84c8b9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AP News<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/us-immigrants-less-likely-commit-crimes-incarceration-1878800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newsweek<\/a> both used the study similarly in articles published earlier this year. <\/p>\n<p>NPR also referenced a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarshallproject.org\/2019\/05\/13\/is-there-a-connection-between-undocumented-immigrants-and-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marshall Project article<\/a> and a 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/03\/30\/upshot\/crime-immigration-myth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times article<\/a>, both by reporter Anna Flagg. <\/p>\n<p>The Marshall Project articles used the Cato Institute research in combination with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/15377938.2016.1261057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research from SUNY Buffalo<\/a> sociologist Robert Adelman, which evaluated immigrants in general and did not narrow the scope to illegal migrants. Flagg indicates Adelman\u2019s team is conducting further research on \u201cunauthorized immigration\u201d that has produced \u201cearly results\u201d but does not provide data. <\/p>\n<p>Flagg also used Pew Research\u2019s estimates of illegal migrant populations to construct regression models. Regression models, by nature, <a href=\"https:\/\/datatab.net\/tutorial\/causality#:~:text=Causal%20Models%20for%20Regression,the%20two%20or%20more%20variables.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannot answer<\/a> questions of <em>causation<\/em>. They show <em>correlation<\/em>, whether two variables move in the same direction, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmp.com\/en_us\/statistics-knowledge-portal\/what-is-correlation\/correlation-vs-causation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannot demonstrate<\/a> a cause-and-effect relationship. <\/p>\n<p>The data she produces, nevertheless, shows a <em>correlation <\/em>between higher illegal migrant populations and higher murder rates, a correlation Flagg readily dismisses as \u201csmall and uncertain (effectively zero).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flagg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/03\/30\/upshot\/crime-immigration-myth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article in the Times<\/a> uses the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/15377938.2016.1261057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SUNY Buffalo research<\/a>. The article quotes Trump stating \u201csanctuary cities release <em>illegal <\/em>immigrants, drug dealers, traffickers, gang members back into our communities,\u201d but reframes Trump\u2019s concern as \u201c<em>immigrants<\/em> bring[ing] crime into America\u201d (emphases added). The distinction between illegal migrants and immigrants in general is crucial. <\/p>\n<p>Flagg\u2019s subtle misrepresentation allows her to construct a strawman argument using data that doesn\u2019t address illegal migrant crime. Multiple outlets, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/11\/03\/us\/immigrants-crime-numbers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/04\/27\/migrant-arrests-are-up-but-theyre-rarely-accused-of-violent-felonies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago Tribune<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/rncs-migrant-crime-initiative-built-ugly-foundation-rcna146386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MSNBC<\/a> have similarly conflated the general immigrant population with illegal migrant criminals to misrepresent data and deceive audiences. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>Elected Officials Parrot False Claims <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Multiple Democrat officials have similarly misled the public to believe research shows illegal immigrants commit fewer violent crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmigrants actually commit fewer crimes than native-born people here in this country,\u201d Congressman Robert Garcia claimed during a February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2893973\/biden-surrogates-slam-donald-trumps-border-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press call<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s office told The Federalist that he was referring to the Cato Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/sites\/cato.org\/files\/2020-10\/working-paper-60.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> that studies convictions, not criminal offenses, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Report\/Misuse-Texas-Data-Understates-Illegal-Immigrant-Criminality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dramatically underestimates<\/a> the number of illegal migrants. The office also sent \u201cwhat [they] found after a quick Google search,\u201d which included the Cato Institute research, the Stanford study, and the University of Wisconsin Study, all debunked above.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal parroted this claim to Fox Business Correspondent Hillary Vaughn in June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/house-democrats-react-jocelyn-nungaray-185735389.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cBut as we know, the research is that undocumented immigrants commit far fewer crimes than anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jayapal\u2019s office sent The Federalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/08\/1237103158\/immigrants-are-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-than-us-born-americans-studies-find\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR\u2019s article<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojp.gov\/library\/publications\/comparing-crime-rates-between-undocumented-immigrants-legal-immigrants-and\">study<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cis.org\/Report\/Misuse-Texas-Data-Understates-Illegal-Immigrant-Criminality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">erroneously<\/a> using arrest data from the Texas Department of Public Safety, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2024\/03\/immigrants-are-significantly-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-than-the-us-born\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> including legal immigrants. When asked for adequate substantiation of Jayapal\u2019s actual claim, the office sent two <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wisc.edu\/undocumented-immigrants-far-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-in-u-s-than-citizens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/undocumented-immigrants-are-half-as-likely-to-be-arrested-for-violent-crimes-as-u-s-born-citizens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posts<\/a> containing the previously sent research. The office did not provide any research actually proving Jayapal\u2019s claims. <\/p>\n<h3><strong>No Proof Given<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Some reporters and elected officials asserted that illegal immigrants commit fewer crimes than native-born Americans but provided no source to support their claims.<\/p>\n<p>J. David Goodman, a reporter for the Times, repeated the myth in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/25\/us\/houston-venezuelan-immigrants-murder-jocelyn-nungaray.html#:~:text=The%20killing%20of%2012%2Dyear,Biden%20over%20his%20immigration%20policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent piece<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/03\/after-sexual-assault-and-murder-of-12-year-old-girl-nyt-reporter-blames-republicans-for-noticing-the-alleged-killers-are-illegals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">covering<\/a> the brutal rape and murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, allegedly by two illegal immigrants. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[D]espite a number of high-profile cases, studies have found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyt-minimizes-illegals-brutal-crimes-blames-gop-for-noticing\/\" title=\"NYT Minimizes Illegals&#039; Brutal Crimes, Blames GOP For Noticing\">migrants commit fewer crimes<\/a> than legal residents,\u201d Goodman wrote. <\/p>\n<p>The report contains no information regarding the \u201cstudies\u201d cited. Goodman did not respond to The Federalist\u2019s multiple requests for clarification. <\/p>\n<p>Vaughn also spoke with Democrat Congressman Jerry Nadler, who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/theblaze\/status\/1806066498060075413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cThe crime rate among immigrants is far lower than the crime rate among native-born Americans.\u201d The Federalist reached out to Nadler\u2019s office for a citation and did not receive a response. <\/p>\n<p>Democrat Senator Chris Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/mynbc15.com\/news\/nation-world\/dem-senator-insists-immigrants-make-us-neighborhoods-safer-it-is-the-truth-democrat-sen-chris-murphy-d-conn-connecticut-bipartisan-border-bill-senate-immigration-migrants-asylum-seekers-crime-southern-border-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeated the claim<\/a> on the Senate floor in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you choose to want to believe the facts or not, that is not my decision, it is your decision,\u201d Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1793448462651957281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cBut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/someone-tell-democrats-100-percent-of-illegal-immigrants-commit-crimes\/\" title=\"Democrats need to be aware that all illegal immigrants have a criminal record\">immigrants commit crimes<\/a> in this country at a rate lower than natural-born citizens.
