President Joe Biden has signaled that he would veto the measure if it reaches his \u2064desk. Democrats will need\u200d to explain their opposition to the bill, especially as most Americans \u2063support restrictions on noncitizens\u2063 voting in federal elections. U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil highlighted that while \u2063it is illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, there have been \u2064cases of\u2064 illegal voting by noncitizens. \u2064Democrats prefer the \u2062honor system when\u200b it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pence-national-review-heres-why-dems-for-the-people-act-is-dangerous\/\" title=\"Pence, National Review: Here\u2019s Why Dems\u2019 \u2018For The People Act\u2019 Is Dangerous\">verifying voter eligibility<\/a>, while Republicans argue for\u200b stricter measures like the SAVE Act \u200cto prevent \u2063noncitizens from voting. Sen. Mike Lee introduced a similar \u200dmeasure \u2062in the\u2063 Senate, emphasizing the \u2064importance of protecting the \u200cvotes of American citizens. President Biden, on\u2064 the other hand, is \u200badvocating for legislation that would loosen voter integrity laws. The debate over the SAVE\u2064 Act reflects the larger political divide on \u200bvoting rights and election\u2062 integrity in the United States.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As the Republican-controlled House is expected to take up a <a href=\"https:\/\/roy.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/roy.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/FINAL_SAVE%20Act%20One-Pager%20(2).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bill<\/a> Wednesday aimed at making sure only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections, President Joe Biden is signaling he would kill the measure should it miraculously survive the Democrat-led Senate. Biden isn\u2019t likely to need the veto pen. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats will, however, be forced to explain why they oppose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act<\/a>, which requires documentary proof of citizenship to vote for president and members of Congress. <\/p>\n<p>And while they have gotten plenty of cover from corporate media in asserting that foreign nationals \u2014 including illegal aliens \u2014 are rarely ever caught voting in federal elections, such explanations may not sit well with U.S. voters who overwhelmingly support prohibitions on noncitizens voting in federal elections. Most Americans, too, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/611135\/immigration-surges-top-important-problem-list.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to polls<\/a>, are deeply concerned about the tsunami of illegal immigrants that has swamped U.S. communities on Biden\u2019s watch. Exactly why the Biden administration has kept the border door wide open isn\u2019t lost on anyone who has been paying attention for the past three and a half years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats say it\u2019s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. That\u2019s true. It\u2019s also illegal for someone to illegally enter our country, but that hasn\u2019t stopped millions and millions of people,\u201d U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., told me Tuesday during an interview on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/426-the-vicki-mckenna-show-27246267\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Vicki McKenna Show<\/a>\u201d in Milwaukee and Madison. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Petri Dish\u2019 for Noncitizen Voting<\/h2>\n<p>Steil, the chairman of the House Committee on Administration, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cha.house.gov\/2024\/5\/election-integrity-measures-to-prevent-noncitizen-voting-and-foreign-influence-pass-out-of-house-administration-markup\">passed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H.R. 8281<\/a> in May, wants to remind anyone who will listen that Democrats already support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/frederick-is-the-latest-maryland-city-trying-to-let-foreign-nationals-influence-its-elections\/\" title=\"Frederick, Maryland seeks foreign nationals&#039; involvement in elections.\">foreign nationals voting<\/a> in local elections, as they are allowed to do in Washington, D.C. Most House Democrats earlier this year <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4682298-house-passes-ban-noncitizens-voting-local-dc-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted against a measure<\/a> that would have barred illegal immigrants and other noncitizens from voting in local elections in the nation\u2019s capital. The bill is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/23\/us\/politics\/house-passes-measure-to-repeal-dc-noncitizen-voting-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deemed dead on arrival<\/a> in the Senate. <\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, just 28 of the 500-plus foreign nationals voting in last month\u2019s D.C. primary elections registered as Republicans, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ReelTalker\/status\/1798352663396200648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> The Washington Post. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In a first, noncitizens are voting in D.C. Here\u2019s what it means to them.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1IcyuKSRdy\">https:\/\/t.co\/1IcyuKSRdy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Candice Frederick (@ReelTalker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReelTalker\/status\/1798352663396200648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 5, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Steil said Democrats want to use noncitizen voting in local elections, currently allowed in a handful of states, as a \u201cPetri dish\u201d to test on the American people. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a period of time that we know that millions of legal and illegal immigrants in the country are not eligible to vote in federal elections, it\u2019s important to enforce the laws on the books,\u201d the congressman said. <\/p>\n<h2>Honor System<\/h2>\n<p>As it stands under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/national-voter-registration-act-1993-nvra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1993 National Voter Registration Act, <\/a>commonly known as the \u201cmotor voter law,\u201d voters may simply check a box on the federal form affirming they are U.S. citizens and meet other eligibility requirements. Democrats prefer the honor system. In opposing the SAVE Act, they have noted the tough penalties for foreign nationals who lie about their citizenship status in registering to vote: a fine, up to five years in prison, or both, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/1015#:~:text=18%20U.S.%20Code%20%C2%A7%201015%20-%20Naturalization,%20citizenship%20or%20alien%20registry,-U.S.%20Code&#038;text=Shall%20be%20fined%20under%20this,than%20five%20years,%20or%20both.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal code.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>But Democrats know it is difficult to track false claims of citizenship, a longtime problem. A 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/illegal-immigrants-lie-to-get-asylum-status-in-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> by WHYY, a Philadelphia public radio station, reported on a fact that remains a <a href=\"https:\/\/americafirstpolicy.com\/issues\/expert-insight-examining-the-asylum-fraud-loophole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significant issue<\/a> in the Biden presidency a decade later: \u201cIllegal immigrants lie to get asylum status in U.S.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But they certainly wouldn\u2019t lie to vote in federal elections, Democrats insist. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections. But it\u2019s not been something that is easily provable,\u201d Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said at the May 8 press conference in introducing the SAVE Act. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018The Only Reason\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has introduced a similar measure in the Senate. He cut to the chase in a post Tuesday on his X account. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SAVE Act would prevent non-Americans from illegally voting, protecting the votes of American citizens. The only reason to oppose it is because you want non-Americans illegally voting,\u201d Lee wrote. <\/p>\n<p>Biden, meanwhile, is pushing Democrat legislation loosening voter integrity laws.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President has been clear: he will continue fighting to protect Americans\u2019 sacred right to vote in free, fair, and secure elections,\u201d the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/SAP-HR8281.pdf\">said<\/a> in its opposition statement to the SAVE Act. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>The SAVE Act would prevent non-Americans from illegally voting, protecting the votes of American citizens. <\/p>\n<p>The only reason to oppose it is because you want non-Americans illegally voting. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ld4QqGPMu8\">https:\/\/t.co\/Ld4QqGPMu8<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMikeLee\/status\/1810346284634812811?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But how \u201cfree, fair, and secure\u201d are U.S. elections without documented proof of citizenship? <\/p>\n<p>Biden and his fellow Democrats in D.C. appear to be backing a losing issue. A <a href=\"https:\/\/onlycitizens.vote\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Americans-for-Citizen-Voting-Toplines-March-9-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national poll<\/a> conducted last year for <a href=\"https:\/\/onlycitizens.vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Americans for Citizen Voting<\/a> by RMG Research Inc. found that 75 percent of respondents opposed allowing foreign nationals to vote in their local elections.\u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/poll-seven-in-10-nc-voters-support-constitutional-ban-on-non-citizen-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent poll<\/a> found 68 percent of North Carolina voters supported a state constitutional amendment barring foreign nationals from voting in elections. North Carolina voters will vote on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starnewsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/07\/09\/north-carolina-to-vote-on-citizens-only-voting-amendment-in-november-election\/74283694007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">citizens-only question<\/a> on November\u2019s general election ballot. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a moment in time that we should all realize that we should maintain U.S. elections for U.S. citizens, and requiring documentary proof of that citizenship is how you actually enforce the law,\u201d Steil said. <\/p>\n<p>Listen to the interview with Rep.
