However, the\u2062 NVRA lacks mechanisms to\u2062 verify the citizenship of voters. The proposed Save American\u200b Voter Eligibility Act aims to address \u2064this issue\u200d by requiring documentation of citizenship for registration and allowing access to federal databases for verification.\u200d The act is set for\u2064 a House Floor vote on\u200c July 10, sponsored\u200c by \u2063Rep. Chip Roy and Sen. Mike Lee. \u200cThe debate on noncitizen voting also highlights historical struggles for \u200bvoting rights, including those of African \u200bAmericans and women. Current naturalization processes are costly and \u200dtime-consuming, making \u2063the illegal\u2064 addition\u2064 of \u200dnoncitizens to voter rolls \u200ca\u2062 concerning\u200d issue.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The National Voter Registration Act (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/national-voter-registration-act-1993-nvra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NVRA<\/a>) states it is unlawful for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. It is also unlawful to steal a car. That is what locks are for.<\/p>\n<p>Until the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) of 2024 was proposed, the NVRA had no locks \u2014 no way to ensure that only American citizens vote in U.S. elections.<\/p>\n<p>The glaring loophole in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/stacey-abrams-calls-for-exemption-to-filibuster-to-pass-democrat-election-bills\/\" title=\"Stacey Abrams Calls For Exemption To Filibuster To Pass Democrat Election Bills\">current voting law<\/a> is that it does not require documentary proof of citizenship for registration. There is also no specific authority provided to state secretaries of state or local elections officials to access federal databases to confirm that there are no noncitizens on state voter rolls. <\/p>\n<p>The SAVE Act is designed to cure these deficiencies.<\/p>\n<p>A House Floor vote on the Congressional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/8281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAVE Act<\/a> (H.R. 8281) is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10. Sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, the legislation closes the loophole in federal law that enables foreign nationals \u2014 noncitizen resident aliens and illegal immigrants \u2014 to register to vote.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The U.S. is experiencing a massive wave of illegal immigrants due to the Biden administration\u2019s seemingly deliberate abandonment of any reasonable form of border protection. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2024\/demo\/acsbr-019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 22 million<\/a> noncitizens (legal and illegal) living in our country, and that number is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/cbp-enforcement-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climbing<\/a>. Public debate about noncitizen voting is rightly focused on illegal immigrants and the willingness of state agencies (particularly DMVs) to register anyone to vote as long as they are breathing.<\/p>\n<p>But this story has another angle yet undiscussed \u2014 what does history tell us about who noncitizen voting disrespects and insults the most?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the first U.S. presidential election in 1789, only white male landowners were able to cast a vote. African Americans, women, and naturalized citizens did not enjoy that same automatic and safe path to the ballot box. And now, in 2024, noncitizen voting threatens to steal the political voices of citizen voters who had to fight to get to the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>The right to vote for African American men did not come until 1868 and 1870 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/14th-amendment#:~:text=No%20State%20shall%20make%20or,equal%20protection%20of%20the%20laws.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14th<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/15th-amendment?_ga=2.74331602.115699244.1719937169-450749800.1718809376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15th<\/a> Amendments, but casting those votes was not just fraught with danger and blatant racism for former slaves, but for future generations of black Americans. Disgraceful Jim Crow laws that kept blacks from voting through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/classroom-materials\/elections\/right-to-vote\/voting-rights-for-african-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poll taxes<\/a>, literacy tests, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/tdih\/1874-election-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beatings<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/new-exhibition-florida-honors-victims-bloodiest-election-massacre-american-history-180976283\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mass killings<\/a> are a shameful part of our history that was not fully addressed until the passage and enforcement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/voting-rights-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voting Rights Act of 1965<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Women in America also had to fight for the right to vote. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfrw.org\/women-suffrage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American suffragist movement<\/a> was led predominantly by fearless Republican-associated women \u2013 black and white. Many of their names remain an honored part of our history \u2013 Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.<\/p>\n<p>They were the subject of ridicule, mockery, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/library.arlingtonva.us\/2019\/11\/12\/this-week-in-19th-amendment-history-the-night-of-terror\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beatings<\/a> before earning the right to vote in 1919 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/19th-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19th Amendment<\/a> after a nearly century-long fight, and to the chagrin of Democrat President Woodrow Wilson who thought their efforts \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/night-terror-brutality-suffragists-19th-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obnoxious<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s new voters find the path to naturalization expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating. Our country has approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/sites\/default\/files\/research\/naturalization_in_the_united_states.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">24 million<\/a> naturalized citizens, and in 2023, just over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/citizenship-resource-center\/naturalization-statistics#:~:text=Fiscal%20Year%202023%20Naturalization%20Statistics&#038;text=USCIS%20welcomed%20878%2C500%20new%20citizens,naturalizations%20over%20the%20past%20decade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">878,000<\/a> new citizens took their Oath of Allegiance. Many are from war-torn or despotic countries offering no chance for prosperity and liberty, and they worked hard to get here through <em>legal<\/em> channels. They hold their citizenship responsibilities dear and take them seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Total government fees alone to become a citizen approach $4,000 a person. On top of that, there is no government answer to how long the process takes other than at least five years of residency before application. Ask any recently naturalized citizen about the process and they would note it can take over a decade, thousands of dollars (often including immigration attorney fees), and endless frustrating calls to the government\u2019s \u201cwe can\u2019t be bothered to answer\u201d line.<\/p>\n<p>It is indisputable that foreign nationals are being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_non-citizen_voter_registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unlawfully added<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/noncitizen-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voter rolls<\/a> through <a href=\"https:\/\/publicinterestlegal.org\/in-the-news\/as-noncitizens-cast-ballots-motor-voter-law-needs-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Motor Voter<\/a> at state DMVs and other registration drives. President Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/the-oversight-project\/election-integrity\/biden-bucks-executive-order-14019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive Order 14019<\/a> demands that agencies amp up their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/megadonors-pour-record-amount-of-money-into-get-out-the-vote-effort-for-dems\/\" title=\"Megadonors Pour Record Amount of Money Into \u2018Get Out the Vote\u2019 Effort for Dems\">voter registration efforts<\/a> for anyone seeking federal government assistance \u2014 with no carve out for illegal immigrants. <\/p>\n<p>Based on Census information and current noncitizen statistics, some researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/news_non-citizen_voter_registration\">estimate<\/a> that \u201croughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/reference\/non-citizen_voter_registration_2022.xls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.0 million to 2.7 million<\/a> non-citizens will illegally vote in the 2024 presidential and congressional elections unless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/iowa-gov-kim-reynolds-delivering-gops-state-of-the-union-response\/\" title=\"Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds Delivering GOP&#039;s State of the Union Response\">stronger election integrity measures<\/a> are implemented.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Could unlawful foreign citizens\u2019 ballots skew election results? Maybe. Placed in strategically important voting jurisdictions, yes. But in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/conservative-views-among-americans-are-at-decade-high-poll-finds\/\" title=\"Poll finds conservative views among Americans at highest level in a decade.\">current national debate<\/a> about noncitizen voting, we cannot forget the critical role the past holds.<\/p>\n<p>Hard-earned votes should not be negated by unlawful ones. It\u2019s not a question of math. It\u2019s a question of integrity, national sovereignty, common sense, and civil rights.<\/p>\n<p>America doesn\u2019t always get it right at the start gate. Full voting rights for all Americans took centuries. But eventually, we course corrected. Full, unfettered access to the ballot box for all citizen voters is now available.<\/p>\n<p>Noncitizens\u2019 unlawful votes would stomp on that progress and the suffering that went with it. Even one citizen\u2019s political voice silenced by a fraudulent vote is one too many.
