Given that Biden has let in <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/03\/biden-has-let-in-almost-as-many-foreigners-illegally-as-ellis-island-did-lawfully-in-60-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost<\/a> as many <em>illegal<\/em> immigrants in less than four years as Ellis Island processed <em>legally<\/em> over 60 years, the bill protects against threats to our elections that Biden\u2019s refusal to enforce America\u2019s southern border has exacerbated.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-05254ed2b9f90245d9ba52f11ddde4c8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-05254ed2b9f90245d9ba52f11ddde4c8\"><\/div>\n<p>Billionaire X owner Elon Musk suggested Sunday night that the only reason Democrats would oppose the bill is \u201cbecause they want to cheat.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"vcEVZLkOdsIf9Y6bgP7rNhMpjnzXDoAmS3tC18QaueU4GHFwx20T\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Because they want to cheat<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1810120025480540372?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The 1993 National Voter Registration Act, which enables driver\u2019s license applicants to register to vote through state motor vehicle agencies, required would-be voters to attest to their citizenship status when registering to vote, but did not require any proof of such citizenship. The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/09\/republicans-introduce-save-act-to-block-illegal-aliens-from-voting-in-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Act<\/a> would amend the 1993 law by requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats claim the legislation is useless because it\u2019s already illegal for foreign nationals to vote \u2014 or register to vote \u2014 in federal elections. But the only thing standing between a noncitizen and voting in a federal election is a small square box that individuals must check affirming they\u2019re telling the truth about their citizenship status.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, our elections hinge on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/13\/without-the-save-act-the-only-thing-keeping-foreigners-from-voting-is-the-honor-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honor system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b598556ed5d7a0f99abe5c0abec1bbcf fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-b598556ed5d7a0f99abe5c0abec1bbcf\"><\/div>\n<p>Another issue with the 1993 law is that, as a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services told The Federalist, the department, as well as the state\u2019s Medicaid agency, \u201cis mandated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/2-more-gop-states-exit-national-voter-verification-coalition\/\" title=\"2 More GOP States Exit National Voter Verification Coalition\">provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dcs-election-takeover-is-unconstitutional-and-impractical-leave-it-to-the-states\/\" title=\"DC\u2019s Election Takeover Is Unconstitutional And Impractical \u2013 Leave It To The States\">voter registration information<\/a><\/a> under Section 7 of the National Voter Registration Act,\u201d as my colleague M.D. Kittle <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/09\/republicans-introduce-save-act-to-block-illegal-aliens-from-voting-in-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. The information is sent \u201cto everyone applying for the benefits, including foreign nationals.\u201d One refugee \u201creported receiving voter registration forms at the Health and Human Services office,\u201d Kittle reported, citing a story told by state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scstatehouse.gov\/member.php?code=1370454381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adam Morgan<\/a>. The refugee \u201csent the documents back to the agency\u201d which then \u201csent the foreign national more voter registration information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SAVE Act would catch any potential aliens registering to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats \u2014 or, as Musk described those who oppose the legislation, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1809374976845156801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">traitors<\/a>\u201d \u2014 are \u201cbringing out the big guns\u201d to fight the legislation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/07\/06\/house-democrats-oppose-gop-noncitizen-voting-bill?utm_campaign=editorial&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Axios reported<\/a>. House Minority Whip Katherine Clark told House Democrats to \u201cVOTE NO\u201d on the bill. Clark\u2019s office reportedly said the legislation would \u201cprevent Americans from registering to vote with their drivers\u2019 license alone\u201d and make a passport the \u201conly acceptable standalone form of identification,\u201d Axios reported.<\/p>\n<p>Clark\u2019s argument rests on the flawed assumption that driver\u2019s licenses are a sufficient way to prevent ineligible individuals from registering to vote.<\/p>\n<div  class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6c629ec5a0bc738a18663afb442d14d9 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-6c629ec5a0bc738a18663afb442d14d9\"><\/div>\n<p>But many states <a href=\"https:\/\/immigration.procon.org\/states-and-dc-that-allow-drivers-licenses-for-people-in-the-country-illegally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offer<\/a> driver\u2019s licenses or privilege cards to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/los-angeles-hires-and-arms-foreign-criminals-to-police-u-s-citizens\/\" title=\"LA Employs Foreign Criminals to Police Americans\">legally present foreigners<\/a> and even illegal aliens. What\u2019s more, failing a driver\u2019s license verification doesn\u2019t stop a person from registering to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Under the 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA), states must verify certain \u201cinformation of newly registered voters for Federal elections,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/open\/havv\/#hava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Security Administration<\/a>. States must verify the applicant\u2019s driver\u2019s license number with the state\u2019s Motor Vehicle Administration database. But if an individual lacks a driver\u2019s license number, he can use the last four digits of his Social Security Number, name, and date of birth. As with driver\u2019s licenses, verifying a registrant\u2019s SSN does not necessarily confirm his citizenship since foreign nationals can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10096.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtain<\/a> those.<\/p>\n<p>What about individuals who can\u2019t provide a driver\u2019s license number or an SSN? In <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/25\/californians-with-no-drivers-license-or-ssn-can-use-a-credit-card-or-gym-membership-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California<\/a>, for example, those who do not have a driver\u2019s license or Social Security number can simply register to vote with their gym membership, among other insecure documentation options.
