While Vice President Kamala Harris can initiate the process,\u2064 lawmakers in Congress also have a role to play by demanding access to\u2062 Biden&#8217;s medical records. An\u2063 interview with George Stephanopoulos highlighted Biden&#8217;s memory \u2062lapses and confusion, raising questions about his\u200c current and potential condition. Medical professionals have also expressed concerns about Biden&#8217;s\u2064 cognitive health,\u2063 prompting calls for \u2062him to undergo cognitive testing. Congress has the \u200bpower to subpoena Biden&#8217;s medical records and investigate any attempts to conceal or downplay his medical condition. \u200cThese developments underscore the need for transparency regarding the president&#8217;s health and\u200c ability to fulfill his duties.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The days since the first presidential debate, which featured Joe Biden making a series of incoherent and rambling remarks, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-attorney-may-be-limited-in-defense-after-texts-with-stormy-daniels-handed-over-to-district-attorney-report\/\" title=\"Trump attorney may be limited in defense after texts with Stormy Daniels handed over to district attorney: Report\">drawn increased attention<\/a> to the 25th\u00a0Amendment and Biden\u2019s constitutional fitness to remain in office. Rep. Chip Roy has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/03\/invoking-the-25th-amendment-is-the-right-thing-to-do-not-just-the-politically-savvy-one\/\">pointed out<\/a> that only Vice President Kamala Harris can start the process for invoking the amendment\u2019s provisions regarding presidential incapacity.<\/p>\n<p>But Congress has a role too. Lawmakers have every reason to demand access to Biden\u2019s medical records. Doing so would provide more clarity on the president\u2019s current mental state and shed some light on how the White House staff \u2014 not to mention a complicit media \u2014 have shielded a diminished chief executive from public scrutiny.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Troubling Interview<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Put aside Biden\u2019s physical appearance in his Friday interview with George Stephanopoulos. Likewise, set aside the emotional, even tragic, circumstances of a president having to do an interview for the sole purpose of defending his mental competency or Biden\u2019s seeming denial of the dire political situation he faces.<\/p>\n<p>While Biden looked more lucid and coherent in his interview Friday than in the debate, his memory still failed him on several occasions within a <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/abc-news-anchor-george-stephanopoulos-exclusive-interview-biden\/story?id=111695695\">22-minute question-and-answer session<\/a>. He could not recall whether he watched a replay of last week\u2019s debate \u2014 the very reason why he had to do the interview in the first place. He couldn\u2019t remember that Stephanopoulos worked for Bill Clinton, searching in vain for the specific president\u2019s name and then settling for the more generic \u201cin the government.\u201d And he got confused about the polls that have him significantly trailing Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly after last week\u2019s debate, these repeated incidents in a relatively short interview do not inspire confidence in the current president\u2019s condition, let alone his potential condition four years hence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Need to Investigate<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before the debate, CNN medical correspondent and practicing neurosurgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/05\/health\/gupta-biden-cognitive-testing-analysis\/index.html\">column<\/a> calling on Biden to take a series of cognitive tests. Gupta noted that he had received more than a dozen messages from fellow physicians specializing in brain health who had concerns about Biden\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>From a neurological standpoint, they were concerned with his confused rambling, sudden loss of concentration in the middle of a sentence, halting speech, and absence of facial animation, resulting at times in a flat, open-mouthed expression. To be clear, these are only observations, not in any way diagnostic of something deeper, and none of these doctors wished to suggest that was the case.<\/p>\n<p>While the doctors did not feel comfortable diagnosing a condition based solely on the debate footage, they did feel uncomfortable enough to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/05\/health\/gupta-biden-cognitive-testing-analysis\/index.html#:~:text=The%20consensus%20from%20the%20doctors,made%20available%20to%20the%20public.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggest<\/a> that \u201cthe president should be encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-heated-exchange-kjp-will-not-say-if-or-why-parkinsons-specialist-has-repeatedly-been-at-white-house\/\" title=\"In Heated Exchange, KJP Will Not Say If or Why Parkinson&#039;s Specialist Has Repeatedly Been at White House\">undergo detailed cognitive<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnns-sanjay-gupta-calls-for-biden-to-undergo-detailed-cognitive-and-movement-disorder-testing\/\" title=\"CNN&#039;s Sanjay Gupta Calls for Biden to Undergo \u2018Detailed Cognitive and Movement Disorder Testing&#039;\">movement disorder testing<\/a>, and those results should be made available to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Congress cannot force Biden to undergo such testing, even if the cabinet tries to remove him under the 25th Amendment. But Congress <em>can<\/em> potentially subpoena Biden\u2019s existing medical records to find out if the president\u2019s taxpayer-funded physician has privately raised any concerns that have yet to become public. It appears such records may exist, given that the\u00a0New York Post <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/06\/us-news\/president-bidens-physician-met-with-parkinsons-disease-specialist-in-white-house\/\">reported over the weekend<\/a> that Biden\u2019s physician met with a neurologist (and expert in Parkinson\u2019s disease) at the White House earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation should also examine whether and how Biden\u2019s closest staffers have tried to create a \u201cPotemkin presidency\u201d by hiding his medical condition from the public and\/or assuming duties properly reserved for the duly elected chief executive. During the debate, tens of millions of Americans saw some of their worst fears about the president\u2019s condition materialize before their eyes; they have every right to know what led to this fiasco. <\/p>\n<p>The fact that staffers \u2014 in this case, from the president\u2019s reelection campaign \u2014 felt the need to <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/2nd-radio-host-questions-ahead-biden-interview\/story?id=111718228\">feed radio hosts questions<\/a> regarding two interviews that Biden did on Friday demonstrates the stage-managed nature of this presidency, to say nothing of the media\u2019s complicity. It should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/photos-show-whitehouse-attending-social-event-at-all-white-beach-club\/\" title=\"Photos Show Whitehouse Attending Social Event at All-White Beach Club\">raise additional questions<\/a> about how government staffers have used taxpayer funds to further this \u201cconspiracy of silence.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2><strong>No Reason to Object<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Conservative critics might raise questions about this strategy, for both substantive and tactical reasons. On the substance, some may worry that Congress subpoenaing a president\u2019s medical records could set a precedent Democrats could use against Donald Trump as soon as this coming January. On a more tactical and cynical level, some conservatives may object to taking any action that could hasten Biden\u2019s withdrawal from the campaign, on the theory that any replacement would prove a tougher opponent for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>That last argument holds little water when viewed against the possibility that someone in charge of the nuclear codes could have debilitating conditions that make him a potential liability in a national security crisis. In this case, the safety of the country should come well before any petty political concerns.
