Despite Trump&#8217;s denials, General John Kelly, who \u2063served as White\u2064 House Chief of Staff under Trump, confirmed in a statement in October 2023 that Trump had \u2064privately\u200d disparaged members of the\u2063 military. Various media outlets, including Fox News and \u2064The New York Times, have \u2063also reported \u2064on \u2063instances where\u2062 Trump appeared to use derogatory \u200blanguage towards veterans and military\u2062 personnel. He sincerely set a new record for the most lies told in a single debate. He lied about the \u2018great economy\u2019 he created. He lied about the pandemic. A Trump spokesperson also denied the former Republican President ever made the remark to Check Your Fact via email. The Atlantic has stood by its reporting and several sources, mostly anonymous, have said Trump made the remarks.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Biden told House Democrats in a letter that he would be staying in the 2024 presidential race, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/08\/politics\/joe-biden-house-democrats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>. Several House Democrats have called on Biden to step down amid his debate performance and concerns about his mental fitness, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>During his June 28 campaign rally, Biden claimed Trump referred to veterans as \u201csuckers and losers.\u201d \u201c[Trump] lied about how great he was for veterans. He called them \u2018suckers and losers.\u2019 He tried to deny it, my son was one of those people,\u201d Biden said during the event. A <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BidenHQ\/status\/1806742667789062646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clip<\/a> from the event has been shared on X by the Biden-Harris campaign, where it has received over 300,000 views.<\/p>\n<p>The claim is unsubstantiated. Biden referenced a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/jYqYZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 3, 2020 piece from The Atlantic<\/a> when making the claim. According to the same piece, Trump canceled a 2018 stop at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery after allegedly saying it was \u201cfilled with losers.\u201d The then-president also allegedly referred to \u201cthe more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as \u2018suckers\u2019 for getting killed,\u201d the same piece indicates.<\/p>\n<p>The magazine said Trump made the remarks during a conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-president-biden-overruled-staff-to-stop-sanctions-against-the-nord-stream-2-pipeline\/\" title=\"REPORT: President Biden Overruled Staff To Stop Sanctions Against The Nord Stream 2 Pipeline\">senior staff members<\/a>, citing \u201cfour people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion.\u201d The magazine did not reveal the identities of the four people at any point in the piece.<\/p>\n<p>Trump denied The Atlantic\u2019s claim accusing him of disparaging the military on September 3, 2020 during a <a href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefings-statements\/remarks-president-trump-air-force-one-arrival-joint-base-andrews-md-september-3-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set of remarks<\/a> at Joint Base Andrews, labeling the claim as \u201cfake news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did hear, though, when reentering the plane, I was told by [White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows] and [White House Communications Director Hope Hicks] and some others that some horrible things were said. Fake things. Fake news. Corrupt news. The kind of news that\u2019s ruining your profession. And everyone knows it\u2019s totally false,\u201d Trump told reporters in part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a disgraceful situation by a magazine that\u2019s a terrible magazine. I don\u2019t read it, but I just heard about it. They made it up. And, probably, it\u2019s a couple of people that have been failures in the administration that I got rid of. And I couldn\u2019t get rid of them fast enough. But \u2014 or it was just made up. But it\u2019s unthinkable,\u201d He added.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Alyssa Farah Griffin, a then-White House spokesperson, denied the claim\u2019s validity in an email to The Atlantic, according to the same September 3, 2020 piece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. He\u2019s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much needed pay raise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-rep-bice-biden-budget-an-insult-to-our-military\/\" title=\"GOP Rep. Bice: Biden Budget an &#039;Insult&#039; to Our Military\">increasing military spending<\/a>, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact,\u201d Farah Griffin\u2019s statement read. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2024\/07\/01\/fact-check-fact-checking-trumps-claim-that-biden-doesnt-need-congress-to-close-the-border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Fact-Checking Trump\u2019s Claim That Biden \u2018Doesn\u2019t Need Congress\u2019 To Close The Border)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden repeated the claim about Trump purportedly disparaging the military ahead of his North Carolina campaign rally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/videos\/c51y8z22z5zo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">during<\/a> the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle. Trump once again denied the claim, saying it was a \u201cmade-up quote\u201d from a \u201cthird-rate magazine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Trump\u2019s explicit denial of the claim, General John Kelly, who served as the former Republican President\u2019s White House Chief of Staff from 2017 to 2019, said in a statement in October 2023 that Trump had privately disparaged members of the military, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/john-kelly-confirms-trump-privately-disparaged-us-service-members-vete-rcna118543\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to CNN, Kelly described Trump as \u201ca person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all \u2018suckers\u2019 because \u2018there is nothing in it for them,&#8217;\u201d NBC News reported. Trump\u2019s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, denied the claim, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Kelly has totally clowned himself with these debunked stories he\u2019s made up because he didn\u2019t serve his President well while working as Chief of Staff,\u201d Cheung said, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Griffin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cnns-jim-sciutto-gushes-over-bidens-putin-handshake-its-about-how-you-project-strength\/\" title=\"CNN\u2019s Jim Sciutto Gushes Over Biden\u2019s Putin Handshake : It\u2019s About \u2018How You Project Strength\u2019\">chief national security correspondent<\/a> at Fox News, claimed Trump used the term \u201csucker\u201d in reference to \u201canyone who went [to war during the Vietnam War]\u201d via a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JenGriffinFNC\/status\/1301975322397741057\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post shared on X<\/a> on September 4, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to one former senior Trump administration official: \u2018When the President spoke about the Vietnam War, he said, \u2018It was a stupid war. Anyone who went was a sucker,&#8217;\u201d Griffin wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Both instances were cited in a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/i174Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 10 article from The New York Times<\/a> fact-checking Trump despite his denial of the claim. Besides these two instances, the outlet cited a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/622522682245033984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 social media post<\/a> as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/eI_Y8l3U8mo?feature=shared&#038;t=311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 event<\/a> in which Trump appeared to refer to the late Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain as a \u201closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris LaCivita, Trump\u2019s 2024 co-campaign manager and a wounded combat veteran, told Check Your Fact that the \u201cBiden campaign is \u201cpeddling a fake and thoroughly debunked story about President Trump\u2019s visit to France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumerous first-hand accounts\u2013 even from people like John Bolton and Alyssa Farah [Griffin] \u2014 vehemently denied the bogus claims from unnamed sources looking to use American heroes for their sick and twisted political attacks. The fact remains that severe weather conditions on that day prevented the safe transportation of the President and guests to the cemetery, and he participated in a ceremony at the Suresnes American Cemetery the next day. The Biden team is desperate because they know Biden has repeatedly disrespected the men and women who serve this country with honor and valor every single day,\u201d LaCivita said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe Biden has disrespected U.S. service members by calling them \u2018silly bastards,\u2019 showed his lack of empathy by repeatedly checking his watch during a solemn ceremony for soldiers killed during the catastrophic Afghanistan withdrawal, and has been criticized by Gold Star families for his lack of respect. The fact is that under Biden, America is weaker on the world stage and has made America more vulnerable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for The Atlantic referred Check Your Fact to its reporting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve covered this widely \u2013 President Biden is referring to The Atlantic\u2019s own reporting from Sept. 2020,\u201d the same spokesperson said.
