Macron’s reasoning for calling the election was that he believed the French public would reject the hard right, but his attempt to stymie the National Rally’s momentum could backfire spectacularly weeks ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris — when the world will turn its attention to the country.

What is at stake?

The members of parliament are elected to five-year terms, meaning the results of the election will decide the makeup for France’s legislative chamber for potentially the next five years. The hard right in France experienced success in the first round of voting, following a strong showing in the European Parliament elections. However, efforts from certain coalitions are aiming to halt the momentum of the National Rally. Here is a summary of the crucial election in France, which could potentially shift the country towards the right politically, following a recent leftward movement in the United Kingdom.

The second and final round of the French parliamentary elections will take place on Sunday, July 7, following the first round on June 30. French President Emmanuel Macron called for the snap election after the hard right secured the most seats in the European Parliament elections in early June. The outcome of the election will determine the composition of France’s legislative chamber for the next five years. If the hard right prevails again, it would be a significant setback for Macron, who was re-elected as president two years ago. The size of the winning coalition’s victory will also influence the direction of the country’s legislature in the near future.

In the first round of voting, the National Rally received the most votes with approximately 33.2%, followed by the New Popular Front with around 27.9%, and Macron’s centrist Ensemble with about 20.7%. Only 76 out of the 577 seats in the National Assembly were filled in the first round, with the National Rally winning 39 seats, the New Popular Front securing 32 seats, and Ensemble only obtaining two seats. The remaining seats will be decided through two-way runoffs or runoffs involving the top two candidates from the first round, along with those who received more than 12.5% of the vote. Polls suggest that the National Rally is likely to win the most seats in the second round, but may fall short of the majority needed in the chamber. Several third-place hard-left and centrist candidates have withdrawn from the second round in an effort to prevent the National Rally from achieving a majority. Results from the French elections are expected to be announced by the end of Sunday, potentially marking another instance of a right-wing party gaining power in Europe

[5777,34049,5894,34050,32076
post-2289813","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-france","tag-french-assembly-elections","tag-politics","tag-second-round","tag-washington-examiner
["GET
