On July\u200b 5, 2024, firefighters in California \u200bmade progress\u2064 in containing a \u200bwildfire near the city of Oroville. The Thompson \u2064Fire, which had triggered\u2062 extensive evacuation\u2063 orders, was measured at just under 6 \u200csquare miles with containment rising to 46 percent. Most evacuation orders<\/a> for about 17,000 people\u2064 were lifted. However, damage assessments revealed that\u2064 25 \u2062structures had been\u200d destroyed. Another blaze, the French Fire, erupted\u2062 in the town of Mariposa, leading to evacuations. Firefighters were able to build containment lines and make progress<\/a> as winds calmed down. In addition \u2062to the structures destroyed by the Thompson \u200dFire, six \u200cothers \u2063were damaged.
