The city of Washington, D.C. \u200bhas implemented a summer \u200dcurfew for individuals under the age of 17\u2063 in an effort to address crime in the district. The curfew prohibits minors from being out on the\u200c streets, \u2063in\u2064 vehicles, or in public \u2062places<\/a> \u200dbetween 12:01 a.m. and 6 a.m. every day of the week. This initiative follows a pilot\u2064 program<\/a>\u200b that began in September, which \u200brequired minors to be home by midnight on weekends and 11 p.m. on\u200b weeknights. The new\u200b summer curfew extends the weeknight curfew by an hour during July and August. Violators of the curfew may face community service<\/a>, and parents who allow their children to break the curfew \u200ccould also face penalties. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith emphasized the importance of ensuring \u2063the safety of\u2062 young people and \u200bproviding them with alternative\u2063 spaces during curfew \u200chours. <\/p>\n
